Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of a birthday and other happenings, and now it is time for you to post until the happening cows come home.
-
Happy Birthday Bruce :)
-
And the word of the day is: ACUITY!
-
How did I first become aware of you ;D
-
My father mentioned I would probably meet you at school, and then proceeded to share information your father had told him about you. I remember having fun with that when we met, until I confessed where my knowledge came from.
-
Happy Birthday to
One Terrific Gentleman!
-
Happy Birthday Bruce! And doesn't Guy Haines also share the same natal day? Happy Birthday to him, wherever lost in Pasadena he finds himself :)
-
A Very Happy Birthday to Our Very Own BK!! :D
-
And Congrats on the successful Richard Sherman event! Love the pictures in your notes, too!
-
And now, to bed. 8)
-
Happy birthday to Bruce!!!!
-
From yesterday - belated anniversary wishes to bigbuck.
-
TOD: from the 1970's TV shows
-
Good Morning To All
-
Happy Birthday to Bruce
-
TOD
It would have to be The Partridge Fmily
-
TOD Part 2
I also had the cast recording of STAGES and I wanted to get the rights to do it for Players Theater at McGill University in Montreal. I called Varese Sarabande and LACC to see if I could in touch with you to get the rights. I even wrote to you in care of you at ABC but was never successful in getting those rights.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Happy birthday, Bruce!
-
Good morning, all.
-
A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our one and only BK!
-
Happy Birthday, Bruce!

TOD:
I'm not quite sure if it was THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL or you dressed in a tux in a hot tub (with beautiful girls) for the Playboy Channel.
I know we first met at one of Ray Court's autograph shows.
-
Good mornring, all!
-
I stayed up too late watching "A Place To Call Home," slept poorly, and woke up with a sore throat. I am quite sleepy and the gunk between my nose and my shoulder is making me quite unhappy.
-
I have about 16 bars to orchestrate on "Go Into Your Dance" and a Guys & Dolls scre to work on today. I spent much of yesterday cooking, so I have plenty of food in the apartment and no reason to go anywhere.
-
U did finally hear from Joshie, who is now in tech for TITANIC.
-

Is this the Warren-Dubin Go into Your Dance?
-
In spring 1980, the Thalia - a revival house I still miss after 30 years! - showed The First Nudie Musical. I didn't know the film, but I was selling occasional copies of the recording at The Drama Book Shop. My composer friend Thom Heinrichs, who worked in the store's receiving dept., and I went to a showing around 6:30. The movie was part of a double feature, and I no longer remember the other film because we didn't stay to watch it.
Since the Thalia was only a block away from my old apartment on West 94th Street, I got home around 8:30, laughed about the movie, and went back to the final 10:00 show. The next day I raved about the film to everyone I encountered in the Book Shop. A young actress named Lila told me she'd gone to college with Bruce Kimmel, and I said something like "I want to work with him."
Fouteen years later, I did.

Nope. Cole Porter.

TOD:
I came to know Bruce Kimmel in several different ways and I don't know that I put them together until much later.
The first was likely on The Partridge Family and other shows.
Then there was a Mike Douglas episode on The First Nudie Musical.
I remember buying the album of Stages. So that was a third BK.
I didn't put them all together until after someone gave me a copy of A Broadway Christmas, which I have to admit was more important at the time because my friend Larry Moore did the orchestrations. And I had interviewed Liz Larsen. But I played that album for an entire year and wanted to know more about everyone on there.

Happy Birthday, BK!

Actually, I worked on A Broadway Christmas, but that was Lanny Meyer's recording. Because of the tight schedule he asked me to write three charts, and I wrote them in June 1994, in a Dayton Ohio hospital where my mother was dying.
Every morning, I would drive to the hospital, check in with my dad and brothers, visit a bit with my mother who didn't know who any of us were; she spent most of her time talking to dead relatives and complaining about being tethered. After seeing that all was status quo, I would go to the hospital cafeteria, commandeer a table, and spend the day writing. I would take breaks and visit my mother's room, then head back to the cafeteria. The next morning, on my way to hospital, I would Fed Ex to Manhattan the work I'd done the day before. On the day we buried my mother, I began "Fireworks/Together" for Sally Mayes' Comden and Green album.

Happy Birthday to our very own Bruce!!!

I'd never heard the part about Lila before - that would be Lila Davis, who I really liked.
-
Thank you all for the wonderful birthday wishes.
-
I think I got five hours of sleep - just couldn't stay asleep, which is fine on this day. :)
-
I am determined to "like" every Facebook birthday wish, as I did last year.
-
Elmore, it was your name on the album that initially made it, no matter how many songs you did.

Sounds sorta like a BK lyric.
"... and I like every post I see."

I do not remember being credited on the recording, DR JohnG. I certainly didn't expect it. I was just helping Lanny out.
-
TOD:
I don't exactly remember how, but Mark found you online and made the connection between you and The Partridge Family. We saw you sing "Dance a Little Closer" at S.T.A.G.E. as Guy Haines, and had no idea who Guy Haines was or why he was completely covered up with balloons, but we loved the performance. Then, Mark started buying the Guy Haines CDs and the Benjamin Kritzer books and the rest is history. We first met you in the lobby of some show at intermission (neither of us can remember which one) and spoke to you about how much we loved the Guy Haines CDs and wished you'd record more of them. You said you might, but you never did. We're still waiting! ::)
-
So, BK, were there no reviews for the Sterling's show?
-
The happiest of birthdays to MR BRUCE KIMMEL - who brightens the days of many and boosts the careers of many.....
Many happy returns of the day.
-
I enjoyed reading about the show in the notes, and I loved the photos. I can imagine the fun the audience had!
-
TOD:
I was looking at books on Amazon....and I saw the cover of BENJAMIN KRITZER.....it intrigued me, so I bought the book....
Then I realized I had some Bruce Kimmel produced CD's: Not of This Earth, Cut in Boston, and a few others.....
Then former DR JMK began asking me trivia questions. He said they were from this here site and that I should read and join in on the fun, which I did - it was the old board....probably sometime in the late 1990's.
Then I bought MORE BK PRODUCED cd's....and started watching for him on television...I also found THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL on VHS. I had read about it in Danny Peary's book about Cult Films....this may have been BEFORE I joined the site...
-
Charlotte just called. Her audition plans have fallen through because of a cold, so we're seeing the movie at 2:30. After yesterday, this can only be a better one.
-
Good morning, good day vibes for DR ELMORE.
-
Someone in my house won't listen to anyone about how the Heat Pump works....so said person keeps pushing all the buttons on the thermostat....now i don't think it's working......at all....
Said person will listen to anyone who comes into the house about it, but will not listen to me.....said person keeps asking the same question over and over.....but will not accept my answer......
-
Feel better DR elmore!
-
Lol DR Jrand, good luck with "said person" and the heat pump.
-
I am pleased to announce that my book, MISS DINAH SHORE, is now available as an audio download through Amazon, audible.com and, within a day or two via iTunes. Pam Dougherty does a wonderful job narrating the biography.

Good morning, good day vibes for DR ELMORE.
Thank you, dear friend!
-
Thursday afternoon greetings! I've been for a lovely early birthday breakfast with my friend Becky.
-
Happiest of birthdays to our very own BK!
-
Service man is on the way.
-
I hope he is ready to get a lesson in running a heat pump.
-
TOD - I first saw the name Bruce Kimmel on a CD that DR Elmore sent to me, Liz Callaway's Anywhere I Wander, in the early '90s.
-
1993 to be exact. Our first album together - well, that and Unsung Sondheim, which were done concurrently.
-
I went back to bed, slept one more hour and then the doorbell rang with a lovely Edible Arrangements package from the parents of Hayley Shukiar - chocolate covered apple slices - in the fridge for later. Listening to more string quartets.
-
I think some Sibelius should arrive today, which is appropriate because his birthday is also today.
-
What do you all think of Mozart? I have never been able to get into any of his music - I'm at a loss as to why - I can appreciate but it just doesn't speak to me harmonically.
-
TOD:
I went to The First Nudie Musical - very likely in its first few days of release, most likely in Westwood. Loved it, but I was ignorant of the people involved. I don't think I even knew who Cindy Williams was at that time. This was also right at the start of a period when I had this huge, dying television, which was so close to not having one at all that I just kind of ignored TV till I got a new one. It was some time before I began catching up with BK's various TV appearances, and I'm sure I have some yet to discover.
As a then-lightweight record collector, I nevertheless had the Nudie soundtrack as well as Stages. My biggest Varese thrill, though, which I didn't even make the connection on till much later, was the series of five Twilight Zone LPs on Varese which I treasure to this day. Later I acquired a number of CDs that coincidentally were BK productions. There were so many, of course, that I still find myself discovering one or another that I must have, and it's been great fun catching up on them.
I eventually caught up with BK the person via Home Theater Forum which is where I learned about the release of the Nudie Blu-ray. From there I migrated here, and the rest is history. It's interesting to muse upon the what-if's had BK's and my paths crossed while I lived in L.A. It's certainly been amusing to find that we were likely in the same place at the same time on a few occasions (as DR Jane and I were at the Heifetz concert!).
-
Loving all these stories!

Congrats, Druxy!

TOD:
Hmmmmmmmmmmm.....aware of you. Indirectly, I suppose, it was through Bay Cities. I was in Italy (late 1980s) and had learned about Bay Cities through a CD I purchased from Intrada. Via the insert in the CD, I reached out and ordered a few things. I'm fairly certain everything I ordered had BK's fingerprints all over them. So...there was name recognition in that regard.
But...BK...Bruce Kimmel...the "person". It had to have been first at Filmus-L during a discourse over Joe Caps.
Then it was at rec.music.movies that you rescued me from a very nasty piece of work who thought he owned r.m.m. You invited me to haineshisway.com.
That was the day after the Oscars - March 25, 2002 -- when I found HHW.com and a new group of people interested in many of the same things I was.
-

Amy, thanks to you, I know have Dance a Little Closer running around in my brain.
That's a good thing.
-
I shall shortly be on my way for a birthday lunch. I will say that as great as Forest of the Amazon sounded on my new computer speakers, the SACD is unbelievably great - it's actually the first more modern recording I've heard in 5. sound and if they only all sounded this great - a couple of the other more modern things I got in SACD were so poorly recorded (unless that ridiculous kind of producing was intentional) that it really didn't matter how pure the audio was.
-

Congrats, Druxy!
Congrats, Druxy from here in NY, too!!!!
-
And of course, BK was on "Dinah and her New Best Friends" so it all comes full circle.
-
Happy Birthday BK!!
-
I became aware of Bruce Kimmel from seeing his name on all of those show related CD's in the 90's, and it was through this site where it's been great to get to know the name on the CD.
One day, I'll meet that name in person. A person whom I hold in great high esteem and whom I gently idolize for his determination and success for fighting against all the odds, and coming out on top. For often venturing out in unknown territory and taking the bull by the horns and succeeds.
-
Back from a fun lunch with Kay Cole. While I was eating, Nick Redman texted and said if I didn't have lunch plans to come to our Thai jernt. Oh, well.
-
Picked up one package and two more should be arriving at some point.
-
I am home from the Lonny Price film, which is really moving and heartbreaking as "Merrily We Roll Along" turns into "Follies." There are interesting vignettes of performers like Ann Morrison today, and wonderful clips from the original 1981 production. I saw the fourth or fifth preview of the 1981 production and the closing night performance. Some of the clips are from previews: the furniture in the song "Old Friends" was gone by the opening and the sacking of Ron Field as choreographer. I cannot recommend this film enough.
When they get to the clips of the 2002 cast reunion performance 21 years later, I lost it. I've never liked the show, although I have much admiration for it.
-
When the lights came up and we were leaving, we ran into my old friend David Chase and his wife Paula. That was a nice surprise.
-
1993 to be exact. Our first album together - well, that and Unsung Sondheim, which were done concurrently.
You're right. but 13 is an unlucky number!
-
Woo Hoo!
-
The motherboard on our furnace was fried......it was under warranty, so there was no charge for the replacement.
-
It's always nice to see someone you know when the lights come up.
-
I have no educated opinion on Mr. Mozart.
-
I am so glad that Dr Elmore has finally seen the movie!!
-
The motherboard on our furnace was fried......it was under warranty, so there was no charge for the replacement.
At first glance, I read the first part of that sentence a little differently, DR Jrand66.
-
Seeing that box of film clips Lonny Price is looking through, I have to wonder how much other footage from it would also be worthy of being seen now. They could only put so much into one movie, but maybe on an eventual Blu-ray release...?
-
The motherboard on our furnace was fried......it was under warranty, so there was no charge for the replacement.
Oh my, good thing about the free replacement though. To you have a plan to prevent this from happening again?
-
I am so glad that Dr Elmore has finally seen the movie!!
I feel the same way :)
-
I know about the sacking of Ron Field, but did they include any reference to that in the film? Right after seeing it I wondered if I'd missed some mention of it.

Seeing Merrily turn into Follies ...
The most apt review I've read yet. Scarily apt.
-
Congratulations, Druxy!

Amazon says Best Worst Thing is available for free download on Android. I have an iPhone. Figures. But George you might want to check it out.
-
I have no educated opinion on Mr. Mozart.
Well, Wolfy's not much for intellectual stuff anyway. He's as down to earth as any coprophiliac can be.
Being a musical genius is just his schtick!
-
I have learned that Warner Archives "will be" releasing Blu ray discs of:
Wait Until Dark
Bells Are Ringing
(after "Battleground" and "Bad Day At Black Rock").
-
Lovely, Ron.
-
The coprophagy reference, that is.
-
Mozart sometimes works beautifully for me. Thanks to Bergman's film of The Magic Flute, I learned this work at a relatively early age. Still love a lot of it.
I also enjoy some of his orchestral work, though there are some pieces that are too mannered.
-
The movie will play in Washington and Texas, so plan your iteneraries now!

I have no educated opinion on Mr. Mozart.
Two of my most favorite Mozart soprano pieces are Kathleen Battle's performance of "Giunse alfin il momento . . . Deh, vieni non tardar (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlzxugLzSWc)" and Sarah Brightman's recording of "Alleluja (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjYctQpwYuQ)."

DR JANE - it looks like one of the relays melted on the motherboard, but there was no explanation about why it might happen....it was about 3.5 years old.

It's playing in Bellingham, which is over 150 miles away! It's playing in the mornings, but I couldn't go see that and be back in time for our Saturday night performance of The Physician In Spite of Himself. :-\ I'll try the Amazon download.

Where Were You When the Lights came Up - that could almost be the title of a Doris Day retrospective

Well, we just got official word that all Thurston county Timberland libraries (including the Service Center where I work) will close due to (potential) weather issues.

Not necessarily. I've heard that the snow this afternoon will turn to rain tonight, so it might not be as cold tomorrow. We'll see.
-

It hasn't snowed there yet? We have already had snow, our first snowfall in Vancouver.
-
I am still cold from walking today.
-
I took two walks totaling around 7 miles. The sun was shinning at 10:00 and it was 32 degrees out. My second walk, closer to noon, was 28 degrees, dreary and snowing. Both walks the wind was blowing rather hard. I about got blown over in the morning.

No snow yet, but I'd heard that there was some south of here and heading our way.
-
It was mostly cloudy today but we are expecting to see some snow showers this weekend, but that won't end there, it is expected to continue until Monday.
-
Good evening all!
-
Happy birthday bk!
-
Well, it's snowing in Tumwater! And most everyone has left the building, so I need to go now.
-
Hello, bigbuck!
-
TAO is deciding on our Slack account about whether or not to perform the show tonight. It may or may not happen. We'll see.
I'm going home now, but I'll be back in a bit.
-
Happy, Happy Birthday to Bruce!!!
-
TOD: Well, I never knew your name but I remember the Charmin Commercial. And then Nudie Musical. I guess I didn't remember your name till I put two and two together with all the CD's you produced after I followed the link from allthatchat.com to this here site.
-
Hello, everyone.
-
A GREAT BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY to BK!!
-
Just made sure my DVR is ready to capture The Glass Menagerie (1966 CBS production) at 8 pm on TCM.
-
I first met BK at the Culver City Rollerdrome. My friend Jan and I were there skating. Bruce skated up to me and asked for my phone number. No introduction, no preamble, nada. Very direct. I was a bit stunned, but I gave it to him.
-
I was fourteen. He was fifteen.
-
Re: A PLACE TO CALL HOME:
One of the things I like about the show is that it ISN'T about a rich and powerful family and their perfect lives. So many family secrets! So much that you wouldn't guess. And lots of twists and turns. I also never gave much thought to life in 1950s Australia, but lots of changes were taking place in the postwar years. It gives me a perspective on history that I didn't have before.
-

I'm going home now, but I'll be back in a bit.
I'm home. The performance has been cancelled. We're going to change next Thursday's regular show to the PWYC performance. No tickets had been sold, so we're able to do that.
-
TTFN.
-
I just heard on the local news that the snow won't last too long. It should be back to rainy normalness tomorrow. :)
-
Well, it's snowing in Tumwater! And most everyone has left the building, so I need to go now.
Drive carefully.

Thanks, Jane. It hadn't been snowing for very long, so it was very easy driving.

Just made sure my DVR is ready to capture The Glass Menagerie (1966 CBS production) at 8 pm on TCM.
It's started. I set my DVR to record it, too.
-
This morning while walking in the cold I sent Keith a text. Since I had to take my gloves off to do so I made it as short as possible, typing u instead of you. I wrote "What time will u be home". It seems my phone decided to correct my grammar and sent Keith the message "What time will I be home". ;D
-
Picked up the other two packages, replaced the dead light bulbs in the front of the house, and have been listening to this latest set of Sibelius on his and my birthday. The conductor is Kurt Sanderling and the orchestra is a German one. I've gotten through symphony one which I thought was a very fine performance compared to the others I like - sound is a bit muffled for my taste but we'll see how the other symphonies fare. But the orchestra plays wonderfully and I like Mr. Sanderling's way with the first.
-
Never got around to the jog. I've been keeping up with the birthday post "likes" - it's been daunting as they're closing in on seven hundred.
-
It is tough having soooo many friends ;)
-
I just finished watching HAIRSPRAY.
Thought the cast was good, but the direction was "off".
-
My legs have been cold all day. I finally remembered where I put my Cuddleduds to wear under my pants when it is cold.
-
Happy birthday Bruce!!
-
I got here entirely by accident
-
I was bored and googled my maiden name
-
To my surprise my friend, former DR WFO had mentioned me by name in a post here
-
I followed the link and joined just to tease Bill, once he figured out who "vixmom" was he clued me in as to who all the other people were on this here website
-
Still caught up on "liking" birthday wishes - close to 800 now! Go know. 700 are surely from folks I've never met, but I do enjoy the ones that say they're fans of this or that and that I've brought some sort of happiness to their lives. I cannot tell you how that warms my sixty-nine year old heart.
-
Watched Jackie.
-
Listening to the Sibelius second with Sanderling - the sound seems less muffled on this one. And at times I have to say it's almost like listening to a different symphony from the other versions I've heard. I'm quite liking Mr. Sanderling's way with these.
-
The funny thing is as I learned more about you BK I realized I had been watching you for years
-
It was a lucky day for me when I wandered into your livingroom and was allowed to stay
-
I read Kritzerland and was hooked. And I have been reading all your books since then. And I am still discovering your albums
-
Love these stories, and love all of you, who have made this a VERY special day.
-
💜💝💙
-
Good evening!
-
WONDERFUL LIFE SNOWED OUT
-
I was part way to Lakewood when I got the call that the show was cancelled.
-
Fortunately, I went through the McDonald's drive thru, or I would have been farther along with my travels.
-
Keith asked if you will have a make-up night for the special actor's benifit performance.

Fortunately, I went through the McDonald's drive thru, or I would have been farther along with my travels.
And dinner to take back home with you.
-
When I left my place, there was no snow coming down, but the theater is farther south and away from the Puget Sound, so it was snowing heavily there.
-
At least you didn't have to deal with snow.
-
It finally started snowing at my house around 8:30.
-
I guess it was so late getting to me because I am so close to the water.
-
I spent most of the day trying to keep warm.
-
I finally went out to the store and to pick up my laundry this afternoon.
-
Then I kept waiting and waiting for the damn snow to arrive.

They offered to do it next Thursday, but some of the cast members have other commitments on Thursday. So, I guess not.
-
I am not too worried about missing the actor's benefit, but I feel sorry for the people who can't afford to come to the show except on Pay-what-you-can performances.

It was a lucky day for me when I wandered into your livingroom and was allowed to stay
It was a lucky day for us when you came to stay.

T.O.D.
I guess I first saw Bruce on HAPPY DAYS and the ice skating episode of LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY, but I never knew the name to match the face until I saw THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL. I stumbled across this site trying to find an address for Jerry Herman. I had never seen a site with such banter and good humor. After lurking for about a week, I got up the nerve to join.

So, George, back to work as usual tomorrow?

It is currently 71 degrees in my bedroom, and I am not feeling guilty about it!

So, George, back to work as usual tomorrow?
Hopefully.

I need to switch computers.

And I am back!

One more post.

I figured that.

I wish it was warmer in here. I think I will read under the covers until I warm up.

Four inches of snow in Olympia (officially).

I figured that.
I am sorry there is no way to change it.

Snow?

Amazon says Best Worst Thing is available for free download on Android. I have an iPhone. Figures. But George you might want to check it out.
Thanks for the info, John!! :D
Well, I ordered the movie, and it was free from Amazon, but it turns out that it's not that simple. You're actually buying an app, and then that takes you to a site where you have to register. You have to use a credit card (they say "Your credit card will NOT BE CHARGED for validating your account"), but when I submitted the info, I got another message, "Your card could not be authorized, please try another credit card." I hope I haven't just given my credit card info to on-line thieves. :-\

Snow?
Yes, snow. But there ain't no sanity clause.

About to hear the last of the symphonies - I'm VERY happy with this set. My favorite, the 5th is beautifully done, although I may prefer Bernstein in the final movement, on the big tune, but that's really nitpicking. Comparing this with Bernstein, the latter's approach is much heavier in every symphony. Sanderling takes a subtler approach that just works so beautifully and the slightly muddy sound of the first improved immediately.
-
I think I've got three more sets to go through after this.

Wow, I hope not.

Can you go to your credit card website and see if there are any charges?

I did, but I they say that they don't charge to validate, so if anything happens, it probably won't be right away.
