Well, you've read the notes, the notes were sad about dear reader Kerry, and now it is time for you to post until the sad cows come home.

Trying to see and read and digest as much as possible about the proposed tax law, which is only a one-page sketch now, but people are trying to plan their operations around it as much as possible!

I will remember Kerry for his kindness to me. I went back and looked at some of the messages and emails we sent each over the years. Our most recent round was trying to convince him to come visit so he could see Linda Lavin in concert. I also shared my music with him sending him CDs. He was so kind. I will miss him.

Post by: ChasSmith on April 27, 2017, 05:56:08 AM
Usually I'm very good about keeping emails that have anything at all in them that's important to me.  Sadly, there's one message that for some reason I didn't keep, because not only was it the only one I would have had from DR Kerry, but the message was so meaningful to me that I've tried to paraphrase it for others on several occasions.

In early April 2013 I posted that our veterinarian had died, in his fifties I think, of a massive heart attack.  It sent a shock wave through the community, especially among cat owners, because he had started the local Cat Clinic which had earned its reputation as an extraordinarily special and dedicated place for wonderful medical care as well as the specially designed boarding facilities for our beloved friends.

After posting about that, I got a private message of condolence from DR Kerry, in which he observed that often it is not necessarily just the death of a loved one or a close friend that sends that shock wave, so much as the totally unexpected death of someone in one's community who's a pillar of support, the disappearance of whom can cause a huge sense of loss and the totally unsettling feeling that our world can collapse at any moment.  As I said, that's a poor paraphrasing of the shorter and more elegant way Kerry expressed that, but he was so right.  That man's death still hangs over the community four years later, even though the practice has continued and is run by someone just as dedicated.  But there are some people on this earth you can't replace.

It just happens that our beloved black cat Poe is nearing the age of fifteen, and only in the past several months he has been showing the signs of aging that I've been through too many times with these critters.  I dreaded picking up the phone yesterday afternoon and making an appointment for him to see the vet next week to get caught up on his vaccinations and for a thorough going over.  We so don't want to hear what we're probably going to hear, which could be the onset of kidney disease (especially prevalent in older cats) or something equally troubling.  But I did it, and we're going to have to be emotionally prepared for it come Monday.

So, again, there have been several occasions when I found it important to convey DR Kerry's message to others, either for their own comfort in a particular situation, or just for the conveyance of the thought itself.  And in making that phone call, Kerry's words were once again ringing in my ears, as it were.  I wish I had thanked him for that message -- not back then, because I surely did that, but again in more recent times.  Because not three hours later I decided to take just a minute before rehearsal started to check into HHW -- which hadn't been typical for me, I'd been waiting till afterwards late in the evening to sign back in -- and there was the shocking news of Kerry's passing.  There was other unsettling stuff yesterday, too -- not on this magnitude, but just other stuff I didn't need -- and this capped a troubling day.

Kerry was obviously loved by many.  Thanks to BK and everyone else for such lovely remembrances.  If there are any pictures anyone can post, please do.

DR Chas your memory of DR Kerry is very moving. I hope your cat does not have kidney disease.  We went through that with Bogie and, with treatment had him longer than expected. There have been times we stopped vaccinating older pets, something to think about.

In today's post I received another payment denied letter from Palladian Healthcare for my physical therapy.  I now have the story: Palladian is now administering my HMO.  They took over from AdvantageCare on April 1, and the first thing they did was to consider all referrals in the works, including my physical therapy, dated before April 1 null and void until the referral services produced proof of the earlier referrals still in service.

Why they could not obtain these outstanding referrals from AdvantageCare is beyond me, but on April 7 my therapist was notified that no claims would be paid until proof of referrals in process was sent.  I guess I am still caught up in the Palladian bureaucracy mess.  I really lost it and told the Palladian  customer service rep his company was a bunch of asses working my last nerve.  i hope it's on tape.

Thursday afternoon greetings.  Between Richard's ailment last week, my Sunday visit with Mom which began with her thinking I was my (dead) aunt, and the loss of DR Kerry, I'm in a bit of a funk.  It's tempting to hole up at my art desk and color, but there are things to do.  Just came back from the grocery and will go this evening to my current events discussion at the public library.

As sometimes happens, we lost a cast member for the musical I'm directing - she booked a recurring role on some series - her manager had cagily had her hold off on signing her contract, although on a HAT contract actors can leave for a better paying job, which I find entitled and reprehensible.  If the actor is allowed to do that, then the producer should be allowed to have the actor leave if they're not happy with the actor, but naturally if that happens then the producer has to pay the actor - they want it all ways from Sunday and the fact that producers have allowed this nonsense is the really outrageous thing.

Does anyone know if they released an English dubbed version of The Umbrellas of Cherboug to the theaters? If they did, did Normal Gimbel do the translation or was the only song he did I Will Wait for You.

I know Sheldon Harnick did a stage version late 70's/early 80's I believe

I am home from Babes in Toyland and a drink with my friend Steve Ledbetter after.  The highlight was Kelli O'Hara singing the shit out of Barney O'Flynn."  It made the things that irritated me about this concert version pass more smoothly. My biggest irritation was cutting the concluding decrescendo of "The March of the Toys." I thought the casting was mostly good, and the Orchestra of St Luke's played really well.

The one we used to go to closed down last year, but she found one in town that we didn't know about before.

What I didn't like was the price.  Lunch for the two of us was $52.00, and neither one of us drink alcohol.

It was my fault because I didn't really pay attention to the prices, because I knew what she liked, so we just ordered it.

But when I got home, I went to their website and calculated the bill based on their menu, and I guess It was correct.

Even though it was standard practice to release dubbed versions of popular French films at the time of Umbrellas of Cherbourg (I saw both subtitled and dubbed versions of Sundays and Cybele, That Man from Rio, and Alphaville to name three) - but as far as I know at the time of release there was never a dubbed Umbrellas.  But in the early 1980s I began to hear tell that there was, in fact, a dubbed version, perhaps made for TV or cable, but I could find no evidence for it until one night, either on ON TV or Z Channel or maybe even a regular channel like channel thirteen, I saw it - I don't remember if they used the Norman Gimbel lyrics or not, but I couldn't believe it, really, and only wish I'd recorded it on Betamax.  And I've neither seen nor heard of it ever since.

I'm down at my computer.  I burned "FEUD: BETTE and JOAN" onto two DVDs (four episodes on each disc) and am making copies for myself and a couple of other people.  BK, if you still want it, I can mail them tomorrow.  They're not hi-def, of course.  And if anyone else want them, I can make more copies. :)

Home from a Thursday night performance of The Drowsy Chaperone  I was tired and didn't play well.  But someone made cookies because this show marked his 200th show.  That's a lot - I'm not sure I ever counted mine.  Someday, maybe.

I've watched parts of it.  When I was going through and cutting out the commercials, I'd just keep watching instead of fast-forwarding to the next commercial.  I do want to watch the whole thing.

I did open it.  It is sitting next to my recliner, where I normally read.  I assume it is my copy.  It is signed, but not personalized, so I can only assume it is mine.

And speaking of CDs...BK, you must've missed my question from yesterday:  For those of us who've been getting CDs because of the Indiegogo campaign, will we get a specific notice that our CDs will stop coming?  Or will we just have to realize that we didn't get a CD?
