Title: AN UNEVENTFUL DAY FILLED WITH COCONUT SHAVINGS

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were uneventful and were filled with coconut shavings, and now it is time for you to post until the uneventful cows come home.

The meeting went quite well.  Both of the two students are not young college students.  The man, Ahmed, is from Egypt, was in the Egyptian army, has two, count 'em TWO masters degrees, and is actually going to The Evergreen State College to speak and learn English more properly.  He spoke quickly with a fairly strong accent, but he was certainly understandable.  He and the woman (I forget her name) are in a grant writing class and wanted some real world experience, so we are their project.  They asked some questions, and we answered what we could.  There will be some e-mail exchanges and the process will continue.  Hopefully, it'll all work out for us and them!

After the meeting, I went to Wendy's for dinner and read a couple of chapters of my book.  I came home and watched some TV that was recorded on my DVR and didn't turn on my tablet or my computer. :-\

I caught up on yesterday's posts and Fred asked, "Does the interim manager still have a job there?"

Yes.  She is currently the e-content selector and will continue in that position.  She's been very good at that job, and would've been very good as the Collections Manager.  She was previously the non-fiction (book) selector.  At that time, each selector (juvenile, adult fiction, adult-nonfiction) also selected their own e-content, but they created this specific e-content selector position and that one position selects all genres and types of e-books, downloadable talking books, and deals with all the databases that the library subscribes to.

Must to bed and with a somewhat heavy heart.  I was doing the Facebook birthdays thing and saw my pal Donna Dooley's birthday is today, so I wished her a happy birthday, then on a whim, just to see what she was up to since we hadn't communicated in a while, I went to her page - to find out she died almost two years ago.  I can't find out how, but I've asked someone who's been posting regularly on her page - couldn't find out cause of death on Google.  She was sixty-one.  I met her in 1978 when we were about to do Stages at the Matrix Theater - at that time we had a new choreographer, Tanya Everett, so I was in her dance class and that's where I met Donna.  I was instantly taken with her, I'm afraid.  She hung out at the Stages rehearsals and then performances quite regularly, and we had a brief but intense romance back then.

I lost track of her for awhile, but she found me in the mid-1980s, and we had a nice reunion for an evening, then lost track of her again until the 2000s - can't remember how I found her - maybe Facebook early on, because I'd been living here for at least two or three years, maybe even four.  We began having long telephone calls every night - it was nice to catch up - things hadn't been that easy for her, I gathered.  We talked about a visit, but life was busy back then and it never happened.  Occasionally she'd send me a photo, or "like" posts on Facebook, but that hadn't happened in the last two years and now I know why.  RIP belatedly, dear Donna.

I had many weird dreams, and I'd guess that a few of them were dredged up by last night's email from a former friend.  The friendship fell apart in the early 1980s when I found myself in the middle of a nasty divorce and I sided with his wife.

Today is a half day for me.  And it's kind of a "slack" day, at that.

One of our leaders is retiring next Friday like I am.  Today is his "party".  He was deputy director of our largest department and a huge to-do will be held away from the city in our Office of Emergency  Services facility.  Should be a wonderful time.  Hundreds are expected to show up.

My retirement to-do is scheduled for next Thursday at my favorite local restaurant.

I didn't want a to-do and said as much many times.  I was told it didn't matter what I wanted but that "they" wanted the to-do for me.

Oh, well.  I never pass up a great meal, especially when someone else is paying.

By the way:

Twitter.

Does anyone here tweet much at all?

I dabbled with it years ago when former DRJoseSimbulan was into it and visited Oakland.  He tried to show me how, but it was just baffling to me at the time.

I suddenly, and inexplicably, began my encounter with tweeting a few months ago.

There are still things I do not "get", but that hasn't stopped me from tweeting when the urge strikes me.

Mirabile dictu!

I believe the elevator will be in service in about 30 minutes!

God damn!

The elevator men lied.  They cannot cease its stopping between floors, so it's still out of order.

I just discovered I have a fan in my neighborhood.  Not only has he downloaded and listened to three of my audio books, but he just came over to my house with three other paperbacks for signature...including my new novel, JACKIE GOES TO DIXIE.

 :)

Doing another radio interview on that one this afternoon.

That's great, Druxy!  Unless he's a crazy stalker fan! :o Hopefully, he's not!

12 members of my book group gathered at Katie's last night for a potluck dinner and to discuss A Man Called Ove and watch the movie.  We usually do this in August, but Katie will be out of town then and she has the best house for it.

Did you prefer the movie or the book?  I read another book by the author at had mixed feelings about the writing.

I thought book dragged in the middle, but I cried at the end.  We didn't have the ideal movie-watching conditions last night.  It's in Swedish, of course, with subtitles and the DVD Sharon brought from the library had some flaws.  We missed portions of a couple of scenes.  Also, there were 11 other women in the room and Katie kept getting phone calls about plumbing problems at their bed & breakfast in Oxford.

I have finished listening to the OBCR of Amélie and I must say that I really liked it.  I don't think I can say that I "loved" it, but I really did enjoy it.  I liked the style and the breezy nature of the music.  I enjoyed the singers.  I will definitely listen to this again.  I know that John saw the show and didn't care it, but I've said before that my standards aren't too high. ;) Maybe it's just a case of "I don't know what's good, but I know what I like."  Just my 2˘.

Trying to decide if I want to even go to the theater - I guess I should, since I know a few people.  As of this morning, it looked like a very light house, but so did last Friday and we ended up with about forty-five, which is a half house.  Tomorrow looks even worse, just as it did last week, and we ended up with almost sixty.  Sunday is decent, around thirty, which is about what it was last Sunday and we ended up with close to seventy for that one.  Which proves one thing:  No one books in advance - ever.  They'd rather wait until the last possible second or even just show up without a reservation.  Of course if they do that, they're paying full price.

Back from a brief visit to theater to say hi to a few people.  Considering how light we were this morning - we had about fifty-something people there, so a very nice crowd.  Some moron who was in the booth while we were gone did something to the amp, switching an input, and the gal who runs sound couldn't figure it out, of course - thankfully the sound designer was around and he came and saw what it was right away.  I suggested that the booth either be locked or big signs put on the equipment - DO NOT TOUCH OR YOU WILL BE KILLED.  Stopped at Gelson's and got the small salad bar salad - few calories and filling, so I haven't even thought about my second Freshly meal - once I eat that I'll be around 1100 or 1200 calories, which is fine.
