Title: THE GATEWAY ENIGMA
Post by: bk on July 26, 2017, 12:03:48 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a gateway and were enigmatic, and now it is time for you to post until the enigmatic cows come home.

ASK BK

Other than the three strip technicolor process is there really any difference is the other color processes like Deluxe, Ansco, Metrocolor, Eastman Color etc? If you didn't see a credit for the color process could you tell which is which?

I have also seen filmed in Deluxe Color and prints by technicolor. Why two processes?

I also know there was a film process or was it a film stock that caused colors to fade over a period of time have a "magenta effect". Why would this happen?

I could not get to sleep last night, and I am an hour behind schedule.  I am also bent out of shape since I got an email this morning from the NYMF show director asking about the drum part, which was delivered, according to Fed Ex, at 10:00 yesterday morning. This is ridiculous.

Are you familiar with the play "Trap For A Lonely (Single) Man" by Robert Thomas. It was originally written in French and it was adapted as "Honeymoon With a Stranger" (with a sex change of the main character), two tv movies, "One of My Wives Is Missing" and "Vanishing Act" and several foreign language versions

I bring it up because in the "One of My Wives Is Missing" The local theater group is putting on "Dial M For Murder".

It's a one set 6 character play with a "twist"

Yesterday was not only unseasonably and unpleasantly cold -- as the day went on, it became one of annoying incidents for some, bad things for others, and just all around upset affecting me (the annoying stuff) and several people in my sphere.  By late last night it just couldn't end soon enough, but end it did (I applied a little conscious sedation), mercifully.  Today already looks and feels different, and has just got to be better.

DR JANE sorry your experience with conscious sedation did not work out!  BUT on another note, I used the STEAM feature on my new dryer this morning, and it is very nice.  Got all the wrinkles out of a shirt that had been hanging in the closet for a long time.  It only took ten minutes!  Fresh as a daisy.

Oy.  I went through that fifteen years ago.  My problem was that my previous car was older than any of the charitable organizations were willing to take, even though none of their advertisements would have you believe there are any such restrictions.  And then I couldn't find (guess what?) -- the title, and I had to pay to get another from the DMV.  Finally, the kidney foundation was willing to take it and boy was that a relief.  I think I still had to pay 50 bucks or something for the towing, not sure, but that may have been routine for all of them.  Don't remember now, and don't want to.  It was a drawn out nightmare.

All those "colors" are just hours names for films shot on Eastman stock.  However, different labs made some better than others.  Up until they came up with LPP in the 80s, all Eastman stock faded, sometimes very quickly, and to varying degrees, but always ending in almost a complete loss of color.  Color by Deluxe, prints by Technicolor simply means the film was shot on Eastman (Deluxe was the Fox lab), but the prints came from Technicolor and through 1974 that meant the imbibition dye transfer printing - and those prints held their color perfectly.

Literally right after my procedure, my friend Margo (who drove me and had to wait there the whole time) and I left the procedure place and went to Shari's Café (https://www.sharis.com/).  I don't remember what I had, but I remember that it was completely delish and I had no trouble with anything afterward (if you know what I mean...and I think you do). ;)

Back from the DA (Dining Adventure) which, I'm afraid, was a DB (Dining Bust).  I had such high hopes - rave Yelp reviews and all.  Well, Yelp is filled with trendy idiots who think they know about food, but who just want to be trendy - if the jernt is trendy they love it, no matter what the food is like or how it tastes - either that or they have moronic taste buds.  Now, obviously I'm only talking about the items I actually ate - for all I know the rest of their menu may be stellar.  But the fried clams were a bust and worse the tartar sauce was horrible - sorry trendy restaurants - tartar sauce is the make or break of fried clams or any fish and chips.  I also tried the cocktail sauce and that was horrible, too.  It's like they go out of their way to be different, but no one wants "different" tartar sauce or cocktail sauce, sorry.  The fries, however, were very good.  The "Little Gem" salad wasn't to my liking and should have been.  It's basically a wedge - bleu cheese dressing and crumbles, chopped egg, bits of bacon and lettuce.  Now, I will profess to not really understanding why, when you load up the wedge with bleu cheese chunks that you'd want bleu cheese dressing on top of that - that's just way too much bleu cheese and it's overwhelming.  I'd initially ordered it with 1000-Island dressing but switched, as I thought I should do it the way the restaurant normally does it.  However, given the sauces I can't imagine the 1000-Island would have been any good.  I am currently sick to my stomach.  There will be more about this in the notes, but oh how I wish Howard Johnson's was still here - they knew from fried clams and tartar sauce, as did, once upon a time, the Hamburger Hamlet.  And now to Yelp.

DR JANE it's both....but that will mean I will have to order some extra chemo pills ($52 each, thanks for insurance!) so that I have enough to cover the additional radiation days.  I have enough pills for the 28 days I thought I was having....but I will need extra if they add those days...Hopefully they will tell me tomorrow or Friday

Listening to Miaskovsky - these are so interesting - every one of them very different from the last - which I like.  And some of these have been borrowed from  either consciously or unconsciously by certain film composers.  Much of this sounds like film music, actually.  And that's a good thing.  I'm still nauseous from the nauseating meal.

Out of curiosity, I was searching the inner webs for my 5th grade teacher...the first MALE teacher I had.

We had heard that he was MEAN....so we were scared when we found out we were in his class.  He turned out to be a GREAT teacher....his class was fun....and he was very fair to ALL of us in every thing.

He brought his record player to class and played records for us.  I was in his class when the Russians sent a man into a space, and we talked about that a lot.

He taught us all to sing "Heart of My Heart" which we sang a couple of times a week.  I still remember it.

It seems he died in 1991 at the age of 64.  I'm sorry I was never able to tell him what an influence he had on my life - in a GOOD way.

Thank you DR JEANNE.

Traffic vibes for DR JANE.

The road is done but thanks.

Our building is being painted.  First we  couldn't exit our front door, then the stairs were blocked and we had to take the elevator.  We took a different freeway entrance and avoided most of the traffic on our way to the ENT.  Then the GPS sent us the wrong way once we reached the street the office was on.  Ten minutes later, and a few minutes late, we found our way to the office.  Fortunately Keith went with me and was able to drop me off.

I ran up to the second floor, then went super fast down a couple of hallways finally finding the office way at the end (thank goodness for the signs along the way pointing down to the office).

I barely was waiting when I was called in.  All that rushing and my blood pressure was shockingly high for me, all the way up to 102/62.  Even after two shots of adrenaline it never went up that high ;D

In the jaw-dropper department: I just watched the I've Got a Problem episode of The Young Lawyers, my very first guest shot (I don't receive guest star billing - I'm in the co-starring group, but today my role would absolutely get guest star billing and I probably would have back then if I'd done other jobs - but I'm in VERY good co-starring company).  I remember the shoot, of course, and talk about it extensively in There's Mel, There's Woody, and There's You, but most of what I remember of the shoot has to do with the actual shooting, not with my role or the scenes.  I have little memory of those, but boy did it come rushing back to me.  Now, when we had our little viewing party when it was aired about three months after we shot, I remember sitting in our Van Nuys apartment with our friends, being somewhat mortified of certain aspects of what I'd done and I was very hard on myself.  And beginning with my very next job after seeing that (I'd already shot the pilot for Young Love but didn't have much to do in that pilot), I made what I would call film adjustments and posture adjustments - small but necessary things as I got the hang of the camera.

Well, time is interesting.  First of all, I am sooooooo skinny it's frightening - I weighed all of 137 pounds at 5'10".  Second of all, boy was my hair dark.  Third of all, there was nothing to really be embarrassed about in terms of my performance, especially considering it was a drama and that isn't my forte at all.  I have a few really okay moments but it's all basically fine.  There are times when I'm a bit loud but then everyone is except Gary Lockwood.  That was actually the style back then - you know, that you could actually hear and understand actors - rather refreshing actually.  Zalman King was so quirky and fussy - I think he made the wise choice to become a director.  My old pal Phil Clark is fun - we met on this show and then just seven years later he did Stages for me.  And my memory was that I didn't really have scenes involving Lee J. Cobb, although I do remember him driving a golf cart to the sound stage, and sure enough he's in the tag scene, which is me, Zalman, and Phil.  He stands outside the room listening but is in one shot with us.

Finally, who knew Lalo Schifrin wrote the theme and that Kenyon Hopkins was the music supervisor, which means  he probably wrote the actual underscoring or library cues for the show.  This show lasted but one season (mine was the final episode) and was never shown again.  So, this is the first time in forty-six years since I've seen this.  I was petrified but am breathing easier now.  :)

So, really, the only episode of anything that I'd really love to see again is Doctor's Hospital with George Peppard.  I may try to figure out how to get some screen grabs from the episode.

The two plays given the most consideration were BUS STOP and SEND ME NO FLOWERS.....neither of them gangbusters, but good plays that are fun.

Today when I asked....the two plays chosen were THE MOUSETRAP and BAREFOOT IN THE PARK.....

It's a dismal season as far as I'm concerned....yuck....

I struggled for many years.....and we just have to face the fact that as we get older, our metabolism changes and losing weight is more difficult.

Perhaps DR JEANNE would have some suggestions.  I don't think any of these weight loss programs are that helpful no matter what Marie Osmond is paid to say.

But checking with a nutritionist or your doctor might result in some positive results.

Did you call, Jrand?  :)

Actually, I do have a few things to say about it. (1) Yes, as we get older it's much more difficult to lose. Our metabolism changes AND most of us are less active. (2) I find that cutting carbs does the trick. It's takes a few weeks at the start--the body tries to maintain the status quo--but then the weight starts coming off. Once I get off sweets I don't want them; I'm quite happy these days with some fruit. (3) I think it's best to NOT have a deadline, a schedule. That just causes additional anxiety, which makes you more prone to eat. (4) It's best not to eat late at night. (5) It's better for most people to eat throughout the day, even if it's just small portions. That keeps your blood sugar up and at a healthy level.(5) the closer we get to our ideal weight the harder it is to lose. Someone who has a lot to lose can lose quite a bit at first--then it slows down.

Bruce, you WILL lose. Maybe two Freshly meals a day is too much. Maybe a big salad would be better than the second Freshly.

BK, there are many factors that affect weight loss, but mainly your starting weight, the amount you eat, the amount of exercise, and something not many people mention:  the intensity of the exercise.  I was in a weight loss program 16 years ago and we could fairly accurately figure how much weight we would lose each week because we could figure our calories in and out.  We had charts on how to estimate how many calories we'd lose with exercise.  There were three main factors:  our current weight, the amount of time we exercised, and the intensity of the exercise.  If you're walking slowly and just moseying along, you won't burn as many calories as walking briskly.  So, someone who weighs 300 pounds can (and I did) lose 4-6 pounds a week, but as the person looses weight, the amount of weight that a person can lose without changing anything else will drop as well.  It's like a certain percentage of your current weight, so as you lose weight, you need to increase the amount or the intensity of exercise, or decrease your caloric intake (without going under 1000 calories a day).
