Well, today's going to be a day.  I get to sleep in!  Hoo and Ray!  Then, I'll go to my parents' for our family's weekly family dinner (I don't what we're eating), then I'm working concessions for one of the two different local ballet productions of "The Nutcracker."  Tomorrow, I'm actually ushering for the other production. ;D

Well, not really the help. We come with the room. Like Uncle Chester.

I got up around 2:30 to use the bathroom, got back to bed, and had an anxiety attack about the new GOP tax scam bill, which essentially wipes out every one of my possible deductions, and could not get back to sleep for quite some time.  Annabelle jumped on me around 7:15 to let me know she was hungry but I stayed in bed and fretted until 8.

Thatch's eyes are both open this morning, so I hope it mean his conjunctivitis is finally on the way out.  I'll know more when its time for his meds.  Annabelle's health seems rather good at the moment, and I'm hoping Dr Mohr will confirm that this week.

Normally when we arrive in a port we can walk to from the ship we do so on our own.  We suspected it would be best to take the walking tour of Maputo instead of doing it on our own.  We were very glad we followed our instincts.

Yikes.

But I didn't see anything about it wiping out any business deductions on Schedule C. So that's some good news, or did I miss something by reading it too fast?

Actress Rachel Collins posted this on FB:
Well the new tax bill looks like it's going through. My personal taxes are about to quadruple. I will not be able to deduct ANY of my agent commissions or dues, advertising, headshots, tickets, audition music or clothes. I don't know what to do. Our voices were not heard. We have been silenced and punished by millionaires and billionaires. I think a lot of performers are going to have to leave New York because of this. This is a depressing day.

DR FJL, will this not be the case?

At least it’s a ME day till show time tonight.  Kristi and Nathan are going - their first time to see this, so that will be good.  Too bad it’s our one night without a bass player.  Last night’s sub was great, but literally no one was available tonight.  Saturday before Christmas week, parties and shows everywhere, everyone’s booked.

Just play it.  It’ll be a piano and drums thing - not piano, bass and drums.

Last night’s guy asked me if I was going to split the keyboard and “play the bass” myself.  Oddly, I hadn’t even thought of that, and it’s not a horrible idea.  But not for this show, and certainly not without a lot of mental rearranging and practice.  The full two-handed piano sound is much more important than attempting that.

Perhaps a second keyboard player could play the bass part?

At any rate, break a leg tonight!

Annabelle was fired from another job today.  She insisted on playing Nurse while I took care of Thatch's eyes.  They're open but the eyelids are still caking up with gunky discharge.  I need to wash all that off before I can apply the Erythromycin salve.

Well, my nurse was way too busy playing with the clean cotton balls to assist me.  After the last cotton ball I laid out ended up in the bathtub, I sacked her and banished her from the operating room bathroom.  The role of Nurse Nellie Forbush will not be played by Miss Annabelle this afternoon.

We had an early dinner tonight followed by a brisk walk around the deck while the ship left port.  Now we are sitting at the back of the ship watching the tugboat, in the wake, escorting us out while an incredible orange/red sun is slowly dropping below the clouds.

The little tug boat has picked up speed and is so close to the ship we have to stand at the railing to see it.  I went to look and it is now working to pass us.  We must almost be at the 7 mile limit before it turns around and passes us.

DR TCB is right - it is not unusual for someone coming to auditions at our theatre to write down they are auditioning for the lead.  I always put "Will you accept another role?  YES NO".  They circle YES, but if you offer them something else, suddenly they don't want to waste their time NOT doing a leading role.

These are usually people who are lucky to be in the ensemble....and these are also the people who complain on FaceBook and to their friends, that the same people are always cast in the leads....

Well, they come to auditions, they most likely have spent their time in the ensemble and smaller roles, AND they can be trusted to come to rehearsal and learn their music and lines....take a smaller role and prove that you can do those things and see what happens.

I always cast people who have been in smaller roles or the chorus as new leads rather than people I don't know.  I also look on the audition sheets for people who have LOTS of shows....but all of them are at DIFFERENT theatres....why no where more than once?  I wonder.......

I agree with you, Jrand.  It is a matter of paying your dues.  When I started out I was thrilled to be in the ensemble or possibly given a line or two.  Nowadays, it is a matter of entitlement.  Maybe there was a larger pool of community theater actors when I started out.  Today it is often hard to find enough men to cast for a lot of shows.

At the old actor's lunch last week we were talking about one particular actor who is in so many shows.  One of the group wondered aloud why he was continuing to be cast.  The reason is simple - he is willing to do any role you offer him.

I just received a solicitation for a new credit card. The envelope was unsealed, i.e., opened, and the application form was missing. Ugh! I sent an email to the post office, but I don't expect much help from them.  I suppose I could contact the credit card company's fraud department, but so far it's only mail tampering, not identity theft. Ugh! again.

What will you do without a bass player?

Just play it.  It’ll be a piano and drums thing - not piano, bass and drums.

Last night’s guy asked me if I was going to split the keyboard and “play the bass” myself.  Oddly, I hadn’t even thought of that, and it’s not a horrible idea.  But not for this show, and certainly not without a lot of mental rearranging and practice.  The full two-handed piano sound is much more important than attempting that.

This is not a problem I ever thought about, but I'm not a musician. You seem to know how to handle it. Vibes it goes well.

I got up around 2:30 to use the bathroom, got back to bed, and had an anxiety attack about the new GOP tax scam bill, which essentially wipes out every one of my possible deductions  .

Yikes.

But I didn't see anything about it wiping out any business deductions on Schedule C. So that's some good news, or did I miss something by reading it too fast?

Well the new tax bill looks like it's going through. My personal taxes are about to quadruple. I will not be able to deduct ANY of my agent commissions or dues, advertising, headshots, tickets, audition music or clothes. I don't know what to do. Our voices were not heard. We have been silenced and punished by millionaires and billionaires. I think a lot of performers are going to have to leave New York because of this. This is a depressing day.

DR FJL, will this not be the case?

Wow, I didn't realize it went that far. I've been reading about how those of us in blue states will be hit and those of us who itemize. It looks like quite a few of us in the middle class will be paying more, not less. People were promised a tax cut, not a tax hike. I suspect there will be some real anger over this and I also suspect the Law of Unintended Consequences may come into play.

Larry -

Aren't you mainly on a schedule C ("self-employment income") rathe rthan wages on a W-2?

I've been combing the information, and I can;t see where there are any new restrictions on a schedule C.  If you hear anything I'm missing, PLEASE let me know.  (although the almost-always-abused home office deduction, for part of someone's personal rent for example, looks like it's been restricted)

I think a lot of people who earns wages as employees may be deducting a lot less, but for so many, it's that they will have less reason to itemize on schedule A.

For my full seminar on deductions - (just kidding!)

Back from doing the recording fixes.  An amazing three hours (took ninety minutes longer than I thought it would, some of that attributed to just getting set up and ready.  I replaced the one line of dialogue that was screwy and that we needed (that actor went first), and then I rerecorded our Asian fellow's entire solo for Like A Man - and finally got him to have the energy he lacked at that particular performance and it's much better now.  And having a superb flute and violin was a jaw-dropper - I literally had no idea just how good Lanny's orchestrations are until today - this will make a glorious CD release.

Watched one DGA screener - very good film called Lady Bird - they're trying very hard to make it this years's "it" movie like last years's La La Land - not sure if they'll succeed but it's lovely and has really terrific performances, two of them Oscar-worthy - Saorise Ronan and Laurie Metcalf.

It's literally the director/writer's life on screen, and it just frosts me that I know that Benjamin Kritzer could get exactly this kind of reaction if anyone actually had the guts to make it.  There's certainly as much plot, and it's no softer than Lady Bird.

I am home from the reading, which was essentially three one-acts based on Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks, and a young man's quest.  The first and third were the strongest, but I do not think it was ready for public viewing yet.   There were some very funny moments, but I think the script needs a lot of tightening.

Well, today's going to be a day.  I get to sleep in!  Hoo and Ray!  Then, I'll go to my parents' for our family's weekly family dinner (I don't what we're eating), then I'm working concessions for one of the two different local ballet productions of "The Nutcracker."  Tomorrow, I'm actually ushering for the other production. ;D

We had enchiladas for dinner...well, my dad and I had enchiladas.  I don't know what my sister and niece had because I had to leave to go to the theater before they ate.  Anyway, we played Phase 10 and I won! :D First time in quite a while.

The concessions was not without issues, but it all got worked out and I don't remember all the details (and there were a LOT of little details), so I'll just say that it all worked out.  Nothing horrible, just a little (actually, very little) personality clash.

And then we left to go to our respective homes.  I decided to go to the local Albertsons first, though.  The aftertase of the garlic is soooo strong, that I REALLY needed to get some kind of mouthwash, and Albertsons is open 24 hours.
