DR TCB is right - it is not unusual for someone coming to auditions at our theatre to write down they are auditioning for the lead. I always put "Will you accept another role? YES NO". They circle YES, but if you offer them something else, suddenly they don't want to waste their time NOT doing a leading role.
These are usually people who are lucky to be in the ensemble....and these are also the people who complain on FaceBook and to their friends, that the same people are always cast in the leads....
Well, they come to auditions, they most likely have spent their time in the ensemble and smaller roles, AND they can be trusted to come to rehearsal and learn their music and lines....take a smaller role and prove that you can do those things and see what happens.
I always cast people who have been in smaller roles or the chorus as new leads rather than people I don't know. I also look on the audition sheets for people who have LOTS of shows....but all of them are at DIFFERENT theatres....why no where more than once? I wonder.......
