Well, you've read the notes, the notes were pleasantly pleasant, and now it is time for you to post until the perfectly pleasant cows come home.

Just before I left work last night, I got a text from my friend Margo who was ushering for The Comic Srippers (https://thecomicstrippers.com) (they're essentially a shirtless improv comedy group that spoofs stripper shows).  It turned out that there were a couple of ushers who didn't show up, and was asked to ask me if I could get to the theater at South Sound Community College (the Washington Center schedules events there) quickly.  I told her that I would have to go home and changes clothes, and she said that that was okay.  I got there in about a half hour.  The show was fun and pretty funny but it was kind of hard to understand the guys at time because of the very loud and vocal (and imbibing ::) ) crowd.  I think that this is the third time that the group has performed here in Olympia, and it's always pretty much sold out.

Anyway, I was going to continue before I was so rudely interrupted by falling asleep while watching TV...after the show, Margo and I went to Applebee's and we both had the quesadilla burger.  It was pretty good.  We chatted for a while and then we left.  She went home and I went to Haggans (a regional grocery store), then I came home and fed my cat, did my evening ablutions, and got ready for bed, where I napped but will now actually go to sleep. ;)

Gottschalk: Grand Tarantella
Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
Dohnányi: Variations on a Nursery Song
Addinsell: Warsaw Concerto
Herrmann: Concerto Macabre from "Hangover Square"
Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue

Vivaldi wrote numerous concerti for bassoon that are lovely
Barber Violin Concerto
Beethoven’s violin concerto in D
Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto for piano

And I recently heard Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, which I enjoyed a lot.

So, tonight, a return to Winter.  Snow in the evening and through the night.  These last few days had felt like the very beginnings of Spring, damn them.  And now this.  But the oddest thing is that it warms up again right away, tomorrow, and will get even warmer than before through the week.  We’re talking nearly 70, folks, in late February.  It’s the end of the world!

I have to join DR FJL in the Corner of Shame.  I didn’t know it was a common noun, either.  However, in our meager defense, to the extent I’ve checked, it seems that its origin is indeed the musical.

Now how about Shipoopi?

In my morning stupor that sounded like a euphemism for something perhaps a little unseemly.

Roses trimmed and a little more spring gardening work done. It's amazing, but spring really is here. One of the rose branches I had to trim back already had a bud on it. And the mint is growing.

I hope we don't have another freeze. That danger usually doesn't pass until after the beginning of March. The weather forecast, if one can believe such nonsense, says we won't have a low below 40 for the next week.

Do you like tomato sauce in your meatloaf? I have to make meatloaf tomorrow and I definitely don't want ketchup, too much sugar.

I think I'm going to use a mix of beef and pork and wrap the whole thing in bacon. I'm also using crumbled pork rinds because one person in the group is gluten intolerant, so no breadcrumbs. Egg, of course, onion, garlic, salt, pepper and Worcestershire sauce. I can even see working in some mozzarella into the mix and red bell pepper. But I haven't decided on that tomato sauce.

I haven't made a meatloaf in so long I don't remember how much of an effect the tomato sauce or ketchup has.

Here's what I do know:  I could eat a pound of meatloaf right now.  Does that help?

Good morning. My daughter and I returned from a whirlwind trip to Disneyland last night. We spent three very full days away from reality. Five, when you consider we didn't take computers with us or watch tv in the motel.

It is so much more fun since she tried the roller coasters and LOVES them. We rode them several times. My fitbit recorded over 30,000 steps each day.

The men's free skate was most excellent last night.....Nathan Chen rose from 17th place to 1st place where he stayed for quite awhile....he ended up in 5th place which is still quite an accomplishment.  Looking at the numbers, if he had had a good short skate, he would have probably had a medal.

I just got back from picking up a prescription at Cat Clinic, picking up a gift card for a birthday this week, and picking up seven (7) items I needed at the supermarket.  That last was insane.  People haven't panic-shopped in a while, and they were tearing the place apart like this was supposed to be the Blizzard o' the Millenium.  Or like the Russians were in Jersey.  (Time to bring that one back, I guess.)  It was totally laughable.

I was going to suggest that Jane could make it and leave out the pepperoni; but, I guess, she would also have to leave the meat out of the loaf.

Annabelle and I have made two tours of the building today.  When she decides she's had enough, she comes to me, climbs my leg, and I pick her up and carry her home.  She purrs and chirps all the way back.  I'm starting to think the trip back is why she wants to go out.

Thatch is curious about the outside world, but he's so skittish and dislikes being held that I'm afraid I'd never get him home.

I kind of "breathed" through it and felt better , we finished clearing and I brought the dry goods and bags back to our church (the soup kitchen is held in a Lutheran church in the next town). But as I was driving home it started again...fortunately it is only a mike from church to home

Vixmom, as someone who gets tachycardic from time to time, I definitely recommend that you see a cardiologist. Your condition is worse than mine, but I also will pass on what works for me: 100-200 mg magnesium plus 99 mg of potassium, taken with a glass of water. The doctors I'd seen failed to mention the importance of both minerals to heart health and I wasn't satisfied with the "If you don't like the symptoms, take the meds" attitude of one of the UCLA cardiologists. This formula has never failed me. It was, in fact, a cardiologist who told me about the potassium and a large glass of water. I was already taking magnesium for a rapid heart rate, which usually takes care of it for me on its own. Since I'd rather not get tachycardic in the first place, I now make sure I take both magnesium and potassium in small doses throughout the day. Magnesium also got rid of my migraines. I told an osteopath I know and now she takes it and got rid of her migraines.

I also recommend Stephen Sinatra's book, "The Sinatra Solution: Metabolic Cardiology."

Vibes you get it under control quickly.

My sister and my niece are supposed to go to Eastern Washington to visit my great nephew.  The weather people are predicting 1 to 2 feet of snow in the passes during the next 24 hours.  Hopefully, they will change their minds about going.

If they can't see him this time how long will they have to wait for the next visit?  I am guessing it can be complicated to make arrangements.

How is your nephew doing?

Yes.  They will probably do an EKG and/or have you wear a monitor for 48 hours.

From personal experience I can tell you it is a lot easier to relax and stay calm when your heart is racing if you know everything is ok.

I tried to post this to "castrecl" but wonder if I got bounced there, since I got no copy in my inbox.  Can any castecl-er who doens;t get the digest confirm if it got through to the castrecl group:

Thoughts on the "Dim the Broadway Lights for Jan Maxwell" Movement

I'd wanted to post this on ATC since it would potentially reach their wide national readership there, but it seems that not only I, but also my far-from-involved spouse, and now it seems all the theater writing by me has been banned and (suddenly, inexplicably) the theater writing of my totally innocent staying-out-of-controversy composer spouse has been banned. Skip did a lovely tribute to our beloved neighbor Jan Maxwell in his 54 Below show on Monday night, a show which ATC decided no one should read about there, despite their writing abou and promoting every other 54 Below show this year there. Banning both of us by ATC deprives us ofthe ability to mourn and grieve with that wide community, just as the last posts which got us banned were the day when we posted about the passing of a dear friend, beloved Albert Marre, which had felt early then even in his 80's.

So I hope my from-the-heart thoughts about this young, untimely passing can reach a fraction of those ATC people, and maybe a few others, here. And that someone with posting privileges can post these thoughts there for me.

This dimming issue has become such an odd tumult. When the central location at the site of her last and biggest Broadway triumph was announced, some of us were planning to show up there outside the Marquis hotel by 7:30, where there’s a lot of room in one place, rather than all along the many many streets dispersed while looking at the many Broadway houses, and feel Broadway’s loss together. For many of us, she was someone we saw around 43rd Street a lot, pushing her wagon in the Food Emporium (now Marketplace Emporium), pulling one thing after another out of the overstuffed mailbox in the lobby, but most of all onstage.

Some of us had seen her many other shows maybe once each, but her Phyllis in “Follies” - several or up to ten times (even in all three cities and on both
coasts), and it somehow felt like a great idea to all congregate to honor her in that one spot. There was talk about some showing up in something red in honor of her “Lucy and Jessie.” We sensed that there might not be a specific huge public memorial in a full Broadway theater given her tragic young age, and this (weather permitting), was going to be that.

From a less practical, emotional who-should-be-honored perspective, yes, a life devoted and celebrated in New York theatre taken so young, I do understand the very thoughtful “dimforjan” movement. Still, when it was one theatre, which as it happens has lots of room on the street and in the alleyway to congregate in one place for 20-30 minutes, it felt like it was going to be very special.

xoxo to our theater friends, and someone please post this for me.

Nutritional requirements vary greatly from person to person. The levels the government quotes are usually the very lowest needed to stay alive--not provide optimum health. Plus, stress depletes certain nutrients, especially magnesium and the B vitamins.

I like Source Naturals Ultra Mag because it contains five types of magnesium. Some forms are fast-acting, others slower. Each has its own pros and cons. 200 mg per tablet.

I also like Source Naturals Mag Citrate, 133 mg per tablet. A less expensive form.

Do not buy 400 mg tablets, as it too much at once (for the gut) for most people. It can give you loose stools.

I'm currently using NOW Potassium Citrate 99 mg/capsule.

There are many other brands available. I use Vitacost.com, as they have great prices, lots of sales and promos, and a huge selection.

Please, please, please see the cardiologist. As Jane mentioned, they'll probably ask you to wear a Holter monitor for 24-48 hours. This is necessary to pick up intermittent heart issues. Mine never showed up on an EKG, but did show up on the Holter. It's not uncomfortable to wear, but plan accordingly as you can't shower or bathe while wearing it. (One of the things the doctors didn't mention!) If your problem is intermittent like mine you may find that adjustments to your diet or supplements mean that you either don't need the powerful heart drugs or you can get along quite well on a lower dose. And if you have a deficiency of either magnesium or potassium you'll benefit in other ways by correcting it.

One more thing: most doctors use a CBC to check magnesium levels, but magnesium isn't stored in the blood, so it's not an accurate indicator. Try taking a bit more and see if you feel better. Brown rice is an excellent source of magnesium. Carolyn Dean's book The Miracle of Magnesium is a very easy read.

John, how is your Chinese New Year celebration going?

It was fun. I was with four Chinese women who spoke a lot of Chinese during the evening. The only other non-Chinese speaker had to leave early.

Anyway, we had a Chinese hotpot in which there's a pot of boiling broth and you add foods to cook in it. We had two types of mushrooms, cabbage, meatballs, beef, rice noodles, tofu, fish balls, rice cakes (not my favorite but a symbol of good luck in the new year) and more. I liked the mushrooms, cabbage and beef the best.

It was fun, kind of like a fondue party, I guess. I made margaritas. Very Chinese.

Yes you do and NOW!

Now.

Listen to Dr. John!

We already have a nursie on this site. If I'm Dr. John, what medical role would you be, TCB?

Proctologist

I almost suggested that.

Back in my early post-college days, I somehow came across a volume called Essentials of Proctology Illustrated. It became a coffee table book for awhile, something to sit a plate of hors d'oeuvres next to.

I am sitting here like so much fish listening to Elgar's violin concerto with Heifetz doing the honors - lovely.  Then I'll proof some more.

Victoria Price is an incredible person.  She will next be signing at Book Soup, for those who must know.

And you must, you must.

Health vibes to Jane and Keith.

Thanks.  My throat is feeling better but I am more congested, still would not declare this as a cold yet.

Tonight we watched an episode of The Barbara Stanwyck Show.   Keith found it on YouTube.  The film was backwards.  Fortunately there weren't too many shots with writing to read.

I need to feed my cat, take a shower, feed myself, get dressed, go in to work for a bit (not to work, I want to scan a score), then pick up my niece and go to my parents' for our weekly family dinner.  My sister has other plans, so she won't be there, but we'll have food and fun and Phase 10 will be played. :D

Be back later!

I'm back.  We played Phase 10 twice and I lost both games.  My niece actually won both.  After I drove her home, I went shopping and got some of the new diet Coke flavors.  They've added Feisty Cherry, Twisted Mango, Ginger Lime and Zesty Blood Orange.

The store didn't have the Zesty Blood Orange, so I'll have to get that later.  I didn't try any of the other flavors, tonight.  I put them in my fridge and will wait until they're cold. :)

I came in and told Vixdad to keep an eye on me, settled into the recliner and tried to self regulate, it finally slowed  back down after 45 minutes but one if these bouts exhausts me...  Feel as if I've run a marathon

:o Oh, my goodness!

What a coinkydink...my dad asked me to record the TCM broadcast of "Titanic" with Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck.  I burned the DVD for him today before I left to go to dinner. :)
