Well, you've read the notes, the notes were masked, and now it is time for you to post until the masked cows come home.

BK, I just remembered that I ordered and received the vocal selections for Welcome to My World from Kritzerland and, of course, "Everything Is Gonna Be All Right" is in it.  When my vocal workshop starts up again, I think I'll bring that and go through it, along with "Two Roads" and 'When You're Waiting for Love." :)

Yes, I did.  I really liked it!  Thanks for allowing it to be watched, even if only for a couple of days.

I didn't realize that he never married.  And at the end, I was thinking, "didn't he die on the Titanic?" but I forgot that that was Isidor Straus, not Levi Strauss. ;D

I slept poorly.  I remember two dreams,  In the first I was with an old friend, Snooky Barton, and we started talking to a young homeless woman.  The rest now is vague.
Title: Re: WHO WAS THAT MASKED MAN?
Post by: elmore3003 on April 08, 2020, 04:02:32 AM
I remember the second dream quite well.  DR TCB and I were acting in a Royal Shakespeare Company production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, along with my friends Sara Jean Ford and Peter Oberlink.  The dream was all about the rehearsals and relationships of various actors.  Sara baked some wonderful cookies at one point, and Peter didn't want anyone to know they were romantically attached.

In real life, they were never involved.  Peter was one of my best friends in college and a folk singer, for whom I wrote "The Gonorrhea Rag" in 1971.  The late puppeteer Wayland Flowers loved the song and urged me to come to New York and write for him.  Sara Jean and I became friends in 2011 when she recorded some Victor Herbert songs for the Collected Dongs of Victor Herbert.

By the time I moved to NYC, Wayland and Madam were big stars, and we never met.  He learned about "The Gonorrhea Rag" through my college friends Steve and Rebecca Young, puppeteers who worked on an Off-Broadway erotic puppet show of Wayland's called Kumquats.

And the glasses look great. I'm jealous because I need a whole eye workup, and it ain't going to happen for a little while. I look forward to improving my vision, and to replacing these frames which have held two sets of lenses and are showing their age, at least to me.

Could someone take a moment to try something for me? Go to Tomie DePaola's FB page and tell me if you can do either of two things:  post on it (are there comment fields open?) or send a friend request to whoever is managing it now (it appears to be a Bob who I think was his partner). Neither of these options is available for me, even though there are people posting there every day.

I wanted to post my own little remembrance with that photo of Tomie and my close personal friend Mother Dolores Hart, who by the way even responded to a note I sent her and asked me to go ahead and do so, and I had to resort to simply posting it on my own page.

I've tried messaging "Tomie" and received no response, then I messaged one of the people posting. Nada. I can't necessarily blame them for that, as FB Messenger sends creepy warnings when someone who isn't a "friend" tries to contact you. I've had to deal with that myself, and usually it's legitimate but you have to actually read their message to know that. It's all very aggravating.

But first....isn't it the case that wearing masks doesn't help the wearer it only helps protect others from the wearer?  That's what they've said from the beginning.  I think people have the idea they will be safe if they wear a mask, when it's my understanding your chances may go up if you aren't putting on and taking off your mask without touching your face or at least washing your hands first.

Very interesting, DR Jrand69. Thank you.

The page has been posted on, but not for a couple of days, while the other one sees activity every day.

I tried posting and the "new post" window isn't behaving very well, particularly in regard to the uploading of a photo which doesn't seem to be working. The photo never shows up there. I'll try there again later. Maybe just posting something will get somebody's attention and get a response.

Frankly, it appears as though they've locked the other page so that only those who were there before his death (or who were FB friends with him) can still post.

Yes.  The real push to convince people to wear the mask is so that we do not share the virus if we unknowingly have it.  I do think that if we wear the mask correctly it does offer some protection.  I used a sanitizer wipe on mine before taking it off, just in case droplets were on it.

White Kitty from across the street came to visit last night while I was watching the full moon.

THERE IS SOMETHING IN THE GLIMMER OF THE MOON
THAT ALWAYS PUTS TWO LOVING HEARTS IN TUNE,
AND THE LAD WHO FEARS TO SAY
THAT HE LOVES YOU IN THE DAY
IN THE MOONLIGHT IS INCLINED TO TELL YOU SOON.
SO TOGETHER IN THE MOONLIGHT STROLL ABOUT,
IT WILL SURELY PUT HIS BASHFULNESS TO ROUT.
ERE THE RAMBLE YOU COMPLETE,
YOU WILL FIND HIM AT YOUR FEET,
THAT IS HOW I THINK THE MOON WILL HELP YOU OUT.

Wednesday afternoon greetings!  We ventured out this morning to pick up this week's Kroger order.  On the way we dropped some mail at the drive-up mail box at the post office and proceeded to Central Pastry for the order I'd phoned in yesterday (as they recommend on their social media).  There were 2 customers ahead of me who had not phoned in and were hemming and hawing about what they wanted and not paying attention to the x's on the floor.  One of them had 2 little girls with her who were EVERYWHERE and touching EVERYTHING.  My order was ready and I got out of there as fast as I could.

At our Kroger they've increased the slots for curbside pick-up, but we still had to wait for a space and then wait quite a while once we'd phoned in.  The problem there, apparently, was short-staffing.  It went pretty smoothly and we got almost everything I'd ordered.  I can make my own icing for cookies and we probably don't need the chips anyway.  We are set until next week.

White Kitty from across the street came to visit last night while I was watching the full moon.

THERE IS SOMETHING IN THE GLIMMER OF THE MOON
THAT ALWAYS PUTS TWO LOVING HEARTS IN TUNE,
AND THE LAD WHO FEARS TO SAY
THAT HE LOVES YOU IN THE DAY
IN THE MOONLIGHT IS INCLINED TO TELL YOU SOON.
SO TOGETHER IN THE MOONLIGHT STROLL ABOUT,
IT WILL SURELY PUT HIS BASHFULNESS TO ROUT.
ERE THE RAMBLE YOU COMPLETE,
YOU WILL FIND HIM AT YOUR FEET,
THAT IS HOW I THINK THE MOON WILL HELP YOU OUT.

Note to DR Jrand69:

There was still no evidence that the photo was going in, but I managed to post on that page in spite of the tiny unusual posting window that didn't even scroll the normal way. What a weird page.

First thing that happened when I clicked "Post" is that I saw a flash of it (WITH photo), then it completely disappeared. I refreshed the page, and there was a small unformatted version of the post on the right side, not in the main section, and with no picture. But not five minutes later I got a "like" from "Tomie" and a thank you comment, and the post now appears as normal, albeit with two copies of the damned picture thanks to my fumbling thanks to #%!*# Facebook. Apparently that page is set up to require everything to be approved and then released. Whatever. Went into edit mode and couldn't find a way to delete one of the duplicate photos, so the hell with it. I did my job.

But thank you for finding that page!

Well I got my banking all done and spent a joyous time with Levi!

What fun......and Marc is a STAR!  Someone from Broadway needs to snap him and the show up right away!

I loved the story and the songs - the sets and the costumes - it was all most excellent!  It would have a fine long life - if not on Broadway - in colleges and high schools all over......

Congrats to MR BK, the Sherman Bros, and to the cast.

I loved the opening.....the first few scenes.....the Chinese folks and their song.....the beautiful waltz....the heartbreak of the first love.....and the joy of the second....

All of it was A+.

Back from picking up a couple of packages - no one in the mail place so that was good.  Came right home, have made two tuna sandwiches and shall eat them forthwith and withforth.  What is fascinating about composers like Piston and Schuman is the later symphonies, where they embrace serial writing - they already had no real gift for melody but were always tonal and the colors and orchestrations were accessible.  But the later symphonies are clangy and loud with only occasional calm passages that resemble my idea of music.  Other Americans never bothered going into twelve-tone serial writing and for me their music never dates.

And COVID-19 is still contagious in people who have passed.  It's got to be extremely stressful

DR Elmore, I’ve had that complete audio loss when going to a gig where we’re using MainStage or RMS and I’m setting everything up with a different keyboard or something that requires some change in configuration. And then, poof, nothing. But another reboot of the laptop, and it sings the Hallelujah Chorus. But it’s an intermittent thing.

I enjoyed Levi! I think it has a stronger second act than the first, which was maybe too episodic for my tastes. It's a biography and lives are episodic, I know. I also realize the show is a marathon for the central character, but I could have lived without the song of the relatives (or shortening it), though that means taking away a short break for the actor playing Levi.
Title: Re: WHO WAS THAT MASKED MAN?
Post by: bk on April 08, 2020, 03:44:45 PM
JohnG - it's an interesting conundrum, certainly.  If you saw what the original script was like you'd know how far we came in terms of making it even producible.  If you think the first act is episodic now, it was much worse, as was the second act.  I got rid of as much as I could, wrote new stuff, cleaned up the songs and arranging them, and was just determined to keep it all moving along.  The show originally began with the Greenhorns section of Opportunity, with the two bad guys there.  Then it went somewhere else, then finally to the ship.  That was the biggest thing to get right and fix - I told them the first person I wanted to see in the show was Levi Strauss and everything had to go from there.  I completely revised that entire section from start to finish.  In the original script, Levi was never off the stage save for the Levi song.  I added So Many Empty Rooms, which I wrote they lyric for and Richard wrote the music, because I needed to get him offstage for two-and-a-half minutes in act two.   Glad you enjoyed and appreciated the comments.

Anyone with any questions, ask away - I love to talk about this stuff.

Some of my LEVI comments have lines through them.....not intentional.

I love Opportunity as an opening number.  I guess it is episodic as DR JOHN G said.....but it moves so quickly that I don't notice any dragging portions.

The songs are classic SHERMAN [KIMMEL] songs, and I can see MR BK's fine hand in the structure and of course the direction....but it's not heavy handed anywhere.

I wish there was a recording of the songs - which would lead to some productions, I think.....is there an opportunity that it will be published for prouction?

I remember your saying the opening was all over the place, and I think that really works now. But keeping him on the move out to California quicker might help that (and again, it could be just my opinion).

Question: Did anyone ever think of a dance about the pants? A sort of denim ballet? The historical photos were great. Seeing miners move about in them might reinforce just how essential (I'm hating that word in "these uncertain times") they were to the 49ers.

He's staying at a residence hotel, Hilton chain, can't think of the name it's in Long Island City and from the website it looks good. They are all in suites so they have little kitchens and room to relax a bit.  The whole hotel is all mortuary and medical people in town to help out.  They are providing full gear. He's being paid - I think extra - by his company. He will also be receiving full pay while he's in quarantine.   He is being well taken care of financially and they have full protective gear.   He is used to embalming people who have died from all sorts of causes, so he's used to the gear.   His mom is worried about him, but I'm really not.  He will be cautious and he really wants to do this

Hartley Powers is Carol - and she was just Maggie in The Man Who Came to Dinner and was superb.  And she's the author's daughter :)  He hadn't even thought about her playing Carol.  That was me and I insisted from day one that she do it.  Glad you liked!

SPOILER ALERT....  I did feel a bit let down that the romances sort of just fizzled.  I know not everything needs to be tied up with a bow, and if it's a bio, reality tends to get in the way a bit, but no one really ended up together...and \having Sara be the friend at the end didn't make sense to me.  Couldn't the Chinese couple at least have gotten together? These weren't major things to me, but I did think about them.  I did love the show and if it was somewhere near me would definitely go see it.

I looked up Hartley's name in the CD. She was perfect. Reminded me of a friend of mine in the PR business.

I think the piece of music you posted way back was a vocal sheet for “Opportunity”. Did Richard Sherman have a fully sketched out piano score for the whole show? I know Lanny orchestrated. Who composed incidental music?

There were only lead sheets with chords and a demo recording.  I didn't care for most of the way the songs were done.  In Opportunity, for example, the music held the "tu" of "tunity" for another beat, drawing out the "tuuuu" before "nity"   I hated that because it wasn't crisp like the word and so I changed it - Richard was fine with all my musical changes.  I added the coda of Seven Beautiful Children because it literally had no ending - I wrote both music and lyrics for the last lines up until "my seven beautiful children." I completely re-arranged the opening number of second act, Pay Dirt - theirs was a slow dirge and I was not going to open an act like that.  All those adjustments were done with Richard Allen notating everything.  I made all those changes even before we did our living room reading at my house.  It was at that reading that I knew something was amiss in act two where So Many Empty Rooms now lives, but I couldn't put my finger on it.  When we got into rehearsals at LACC I finally realized that Sarah had no singing in act two, so I knew that wasn't right, and then as originally written you went from Levi's last line and exit directly to the next scene with Levi in a whole other location, which was never going to work.  And then I looked at that exit line, "So many empty rooms" and realized it was a great song title.  I wrote the lyric when I got home, sent it to Richard in the morning, and about thirty minutes later he called and played the tune.  His original version had a kind of habanera rhythm, which didn't work, so we gave it a different feel.  And in Levi's big eleven o'clock number, that was kind of all over the place, so I did a lot of streamlining it with the dialogue bits between.  I tried to do all the dialogue I added in Larry's style and think that was pretty successful.

Now for the really important question of the evening. What kind of deviled eggs should I make this weekend?

A. Pimento cheese deviled eggs using jalapeno pimento cheese.
B. Greek deviled eggs with feta and black olives
C. Dirty martini deviled eggs with vodka and green olive juice (I think I have a little vodka left. I gave a lot away.)

In fact, both romances were entirely made up by Larry.  I understand why Levi couldn't end up with Sarah because Levi in real life never married, so there was no way to change that, and yes, it's not satisfying and we didn't really solve that and it does need to be addressed in some way.  And I'm not sure the Chinese couple would get together because Su Lin simply doesn't feel love for Han Chow.  It's a conundrum for the last ten minutes of the show, surely.

I agree, clearly  Su Lin doesn't love Han Chow - I see the problem with that.  I think part of it was the song Levi sang had so much longing in it that it was like he didn't want to end up single so with the romances sort of dangling out there it felt even more unresolved.  Maybe if he had resolved it more in his own mind through the song...Look I've become a humanitarian is nice but it doesn't resolve the personal side.

My nephew messaged me last night.  He's doing Mortuary Disaster Relief for 10 days.  He's assigned to Queens but didn't have any info on his duties as he had just arrived in NYC.  I am so proud of him for being willing to do that.  No one talks about the morticians and what a difficult time this is for them.  They have not only the number of people to take care of, but also families who they have to tell they can't have the funeral they wanted for their loved ones. And COVID-19 is still contagious in people who have passed.  It's got to be extremely stressful

Your nephew is very admirable, especially when reading many funeral homes won't take the bodies.  I hope your nephew is well protected.   Where will he be staying and is it provided for him or does he pay the expense himself?

Stay well vibes for your nephew!

I am glad it is all being done properly as it should be done.

Yesterday, I got a FedEx text message that a package was going to be delivered today, but when I clicked on the link which opens up their website in my browser, THAT page says that it's going to be delivered tomorrow.  What gives??  I guess I'll find out when I find out...hopefully, sooner rather than later.

My guess, they had too many packages and delayed yours.  If it doesn't say "out for delivery" the delivery date isn't a definite date.

The text that I got doesn't say "out for delivery," just "scheduled for delivery 4/08."  So, tomorrow I'll stay home, or at least until I receive the package.  The latest updat was that it departed the FedEx location in Tracy, CA at 10:07 pm (Pacific time).  At least, there's movement!

Carol Christmas was wonderful. Tightly written, constantly moving. The songs had full impact. The libretto just enough to support everything. And a great star, I can't remember her name. Like any good male Scrooge, she made you dislike aspects of her without hating her for being so greedy and selfish.

Hartley Powers is Carol - and she was just Maggie in The Man Who Came to Dinner and was superb.  And she's the author's daughter :)  He hadn't even thought about her playing Carol.  That was me and I insisted from day one that she do it.  Glad you liked!

She really was great.  I loved her voice, too.

What role did I play in MIDSUMMER?
