Title: ENIGMA VARIATIONS
Post by: bk on July 17, 2020, 12:21:38 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both an enigma and a variation, and now it is time for you to post until the enigmatic cows come home.

Well, my evening ablutions took a little longer than usual and now, I'm off to bed.  Last night, I just couldn't get to sleep, so I hope that I'm actually
able to sleep now.

Have a good day, all!

I did not watch Broadway Barks, but the entire video is on youtube.  The program, which is to me a glorified infomercial, lasts three hours, so I would never have lasted through it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjUkJt4oa2w

I do love that little Jack Russell terrier at 15:36 from the Humane Society, and I will skim through the whole video later today.

DR Laura, my attitude about getting a dog is if it happens, it happens, but it has to be a small dog, like Jack Russell or French bulldog, and I honestly doubt it will ever happen.  It's a nice dream.  Perhaps if I move back to Ohio.

Since it isn't Saturday, I have no plans, as if I did have plans for Saturday.  I'm going to work on an A&T story, and laze about with A&T and Stella.  We have our soaps and court TV shows to keep tabs on.

Kitty cleanup is over.  I filled the litter box with too much litter yesterday, and it was a mess to deal with.  I see a trip to the bathroom with a dustbuster today.

Well tonight is the middle school production of Hamlet in Halves....at the park....in the bandshell....

Tomorrow night is the high school version at the same place.

Many precautions are taken.....sitting on the grass six feet apart....masks, etc.....

My favorite in this preview video is the middle school Hamlet with the skulls on his shirt......and the fact that Dustin spelled it Hamelt in the video.....

The MET Opera’s The Gershwins’ [sic] Porgy and Bess is on PBS (Great Performances) tonight.

https://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/gp-at-the-met-porgy-and-bess-about-the-opera/11582/

I am so disgusted with that estate-driven title that words fail me. And if that isn’t enough:

This Met Opera production takes a fresh approach to a complicated masterpiece, which has been criticized for its African American stereotypes since its 1935 debut. The setting — Catfish Row, a Charleston, South Carolina neighborhood – is now a close-knit, aspirational working-class community in which everyone is doing his or her best to get by, instead of an abandoned slum.

I’ll just DVR it so I can check out a few scenes and musical passages when the mood strikes.

Thank you. I have never seen the show. The dubbing was so bad in the Trevor Nunn version that I couldn’t watch it.

Friday afternoon greetings!  Doing some desk work and waiting for notification that a prescription is ready to pick up at Kroger.  When I receive that, we'll go to the drive-up pharmacy and to the public library for curbside service.  Whew - all this excitement!

TOD - I'm watching the HBO series (on DVD from the library) "Big Little Lies," based on the book my group discussed last night on Zoom.  The book is better than the film, but I'm enjoying the Monterey scenery.

I just remembered an unsettling dream I had last night.  I was living in Ohio with my parents and brothers in the house where I grew up on Goldman Avenue.  There was all this frustration going on with laundry, the washer and dryer, and my dad was dealing with repairs on a clogged toilet.  Then the front hallway began to fill up with flies.  It was like a beehive swarming with bees, only flies.  I remember opening the front door to drive them outside.  This did no good at all and the house was filling with them.  I remember someone saying "Beelzebub is the Lord of the Flies."

And I woke up, rather terrified.  It took me a while to settle back to sleep.

Just before reading this I was hearing a lot of buzzing going on, seemingly just outside my window. Being the time of year it is, I texted Nathan, who's an exterminator, to let him know there might be some evil nest building going on out there. Then I got up and tried looking out the window, and it was nothing but a FLY looking for a way out. And then I sat back down and what do I read but DR Elmore's dream hallway filling up with flies! Are we in Amityville yet?  :)

DR ELMORE the Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that in your dream the flies indicate a jealousy that is holding you back.  Your trying to get rid of them shows that you should try to act the part of the peace maker in a family disagreement.....good luck....the clogged convenience represents a legal agreement that needs to be resolved.

What did your father plan to do with the property - or something he had suggested years ago may be the way to go.

Our dear Echo had a wonderful, crazy Jack Russel friend.  The dog was 1/4 Echo's size and weight but could keep up with her, and Echo was fast like a Border Collie.  When Echo wasn't playing she was calm like a typical Bernese Mt Dog, not the Jack Russell.  This dog rarely stopped.

Since Jack Russell's are notorious for being over active dogs the family searched very carefully for a calm one before adopting their second Jack Russel.

When my dad was alive, he wanted to sell it and spend the remainder of his days living in his SUV and traveling.  I believe he thought he would park it on Randy's farm and then roam when he wanted to.  As to the land itself, I don't think he ever thought much about what would come of it.  Because it was so close to the new hospital under construction, he figured it might end up holding a motel, doctor's office or clinic, fast food joint.  When he died we were offered $675,000 by a motel chain.  My brothers killed the deal.

Yup.  She thought insurance would cover these.  Since we have been trying other options for months now and nothing has worked maybe she can get them approved.  There are newer drops she preferred but figured my chances of getting these covered were greater.

I am currently using something that is a substitute for $500 drops I thought were too expensive.

I thought I wasn’t going to get back to Wozzeck in time, but I did, just on the iPad. I also didn’t get the score out, but I’ve got other chances to have a go at that. I was more interested in seeing the production, and I thought it was mostly good. Even on the small screen, it was a shocker when the set was revealed for the bows — because as with Lulu a few seasons ago, it’s atmospheric lighting and projections that ruled the day.

I do have something of a handicap when it comes to this piece. I grew up on the Mack Harrell / Eileen Farrell / Mitropoulos live performance recording which is lightning in a bottle, so the sound and “feel” of that is my benchmark whenever I’m watching or listening to a performance. But I did enjoy this. It just needs to be seen and heard on a larger system than an iPad.

My acupuncturist was asked to be interviewed for a documentary on fixing healthcare. After my treatment today she and I spent some time brainstorming. She had already written a few paragraphs, which weren't bad, but I felt they had little impact. I told her what I would say, more for a presentation than an interview, and she liked it.

I'd no sooner arrived home when I was asked to join a Zoom session with the film's director and her, but I couldn't get the Zoom audio to work. I feel like the last person on earth to try Zoom, but frankly felt no need for it. I let them know I'm available by (old-fashioned) phone if they need me. The book is about to be published, so they're not really looking for new ideas, just doing this acupuncture section, I think, for the film.

Great, insurance won't cover it and without insurance the drops are over $2,000.  They sent the info back to my eye doctor.

Do they send over a cardiologist for the heart attack you'll have when you see the bill?

Vibes you find a reasonable solution to the problem.

Speaking of eye doctors, I received a text from the ophthalmologist today, cancelling my August appointment. I've been trying to see this doctor for a consultaion for over a year now. He had a 3-month waiting list, plus there was a lengthy fumble over the referral, schedule conflicts, and then Covid. I tried to call to reschedule, but the lines were busy and the voicemail box was full. God only knows when I'll be able to see him. I've been using Natural Ophthalmics products in the meantime. They have really helped! I've been very pleased to have found them. But a little surgery would mean that I don't have to take them forever. At least in theory. I had no idea that the cataract surgery would necessitate a second one.

I've noticed a lot of people feeling the stress of Covid and lockdown. I think a lot of people thought that lockdown would just be for a month or two, then businesses would reopen and we'd be back to normal. Many here did reopen, then had to close again. Definitely Covid fatigue.

Have a good weekend, everyone.

Stay calm and get some rest. We've all been through a lot.

Zizi Jeanmarie died at 96. Didn’t know she was still alive. The Girl in the Pink Tights was her big stage show.

Wow!  96 years old!  Hopefully, she had a good, as well as a long life!

George, how is pug doing? I've thought about her several times lately.

Vibes for her recovery!

Thanks, Jeanne!  She is improving.  She wrote on FB, "I am not yet 100% but again, I am going in the right direction."  So, that's good. :)

So, my friend pug wrote a play that's going to be streaming on Facebook AND YouTube!  It's going to start in a few minutes, but if anyone wants to watch it's available on YouTube here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXSgqNJgS9E (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXSgqNJgS9E)

It's over.  Everyone did really well.  It was kind of a Zoom-like reading/horror show.

I didn't realize it, but yesterday there was a write-up in The Olympian about the show and pug's diagnosis:

Pug Bujeaud’s new virtual play will go on even though she has coronavirus. (https://www.theolympian.com/entertainment/arts-culture/article244236022.html)

That is wonderful :)

It sounds like you had a good day.

DR Jeanne I know a number of people who haven't figured out Zoom. I haven't had to try it yet.

Keith had to have a quick second surgery on one eye.  His problem was not uncommon.

Zoom is pretty easy once you get the hang of its little intricacies.  If the person doing the inviting doesn't check the right boxes, then the people joining the meeting have to enable their own video and audio - the audio button is in the bottom left corner.  But I check those boxes so anyone who joins already has the audio and video enabled.

As I saw people refusing  to take proper precautions I knew this would last a long time.  Definitely Covid fatigue.

Elmore, I agree with Laura about not getting a dog.  What happens if you get laid up?  Your cats can use a litter box, but a dog needs to go out to go potty.  What if you elevator breaks again?  Are you prepared to take him up and down all those stairs, four or more times a day.  Both you and the dog will suffer.  Wait until you go back to Ohio.
