Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a little Wozzeck and a little Lulu, and now it is time for you to post until the lulu cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: CROMULENT!
-
I was just about to post a Page Six Once on This Island Dance yesterday, but the day got locked. ::)
-
So, here's a Page One Dance instead! ;D

Have a good day, all!
-
Good morning, everyone.
-
And the word of the day is: CROMULENT!
A cross between a croissant and a mullet?
-
Wow - went to YouTube to educate myself about the Flexatone, and ended up going down a whole percussion rabbit hole.
-
As one does.
-
If Lulu opened on Broadway, the advertising campaign could be: LULU'S BACK IN TOWN!
-
I like that cover, DR George.
-
Are the vinyl discs really orange?
-
Or is that just a coconut? 8)
-
Good morning, all!

I think the Moderna vaccine curse bitchslapped me last night. I was awake half the night with intense, horrible leg cramps that no drug would alleviate.

Minnesota Department of Transportation had a contest to name new state snow plows. Readers submitted names, and the top names got voted on. After over 120,000 votes were tallied, here are the winners:

The CPAC 2021 singer of the national anthem, I gather, has taken down her YouTube channel because of the hate and advice of the "don't think you can sing" sort.
-
Sorry to hear this, DR elmore3003. Hoping the discomfort is temporary toward the permanent gain.
-
That last post was about your legs. Not about the singing. Although I guess that could apply, too.
-
BK, before Cerha (?) completed the third act of LULU, the missing section and her death by Jack the Ripper were staged in pantomine while the section of her escape from prison with Geschwitz to London often used filmed sequences accompanied by Berg's orchestra suite from the opera.
-
I've had vocal scores for Wozzeck and Lulu for years, but every time I put on a recording and started following the score, I had major anxiety attacks - how do you know if someone plays a wrong note? how does a singer find a pitch - that after about fifteen minutes I turned the opera off. In the late 1990s my late friend Dale Kugel, former librarian of Tams-Witmark, invited me to a dress rehearsal of Wozzeck at the Met.
It was one of the most enlightening afternoons of my life. The production and performers was wonderful, and the music was glorious. Removing myself from the analysis of the notes, I could simply enjoy the music for what it was, and i had never realized what beautiful score it is.

I have a delivery of groceries arriving early this afternoon, but I think I will spend most of the day lolling about with the cats.

I knew. Thanks.

The kitties are happy this morning. They got a new litter box.

When I take the recyclables to the basement, I will wash out the old one and leave it in the garbage. Then I will lie down with the cats until the grocery delivery arrives.

I LOVE the secret stairs! If I were in L.A. right now, I'd be out there walking some of them.
I discovered my first one in Whitley Heights while exploring the hilly part of my neighborhood on foot (I lived at the very base of that hill), and the High Tower / Hollywood Bowl one(s) on another more extended walk. I think I also came across one or two in the Beachwood and/or Bronson (?) areas. I have the book here and will have to review those, and get his latest revision sometime.
Back then, of course, they weren't a "thing", and I never thought to do any followup to find out how many there actually were. I was thrilled to stumble across a mention of his book several years ago, and I ordered it that day.

They paid billions in fines for delayed returns. I think they’re quicker as a result.

Good news from DR JANE - continued sleep vibes.
Good news from DR LAURA - enjoy the drive.

Congrats to DR ELMORE on his bounty.
Congrats to DR JEANNE on her new battery.

I envy you that afternoon rehearsal!
And I'm amazed to hear what a challenge the score and the pitches, etc., were -- to you, of all people, sir! :)
I was fortunate to have had a wonderful start on these while in school, and they got into my ear fairly early. We did the Lulu Suite and I loved playing the piano part. I just took out my Universal Ed. study-size score, and was stunned to see my neat little handwritten notes indicating that I played from that -- except wherever I wrote "switch to part", I guess for page turns! Good Lord, nowadays I wouldn't even be able to read that small print up there on the piano's music rack.
Another time, a friend asked if I'd be interested in helping him learn the pitches and intervals of Wozzeck by the two of us singing two parts together at a time, very slowly, sort of solfeggio style, but I truly don't remember what came out of our mouths except the notes themselves. I know we weren't singing the German; in fact, we were working on orchestral lines as much as anything, just picking two parts at a time and getting them in tune. Isn't that weird? But we went through a few scenes that way over several sessions, and it really worked. I also got to where I could play a few of the scenes on piano fairly well. Ah, those were the days...

Congrats to DR ELMORE on his bounty.
Congrats to DR JEANNE on her new battery.
And I just purchased myself a new leather jacket. Keeping his claws sharp, Thatch has scratched the hell out of my old one, which is around 25 years old.

The recordings and videos are fascinating. I had the Böhm ones, and I'd forgotten that Stratas is on the Boulez but NOT on the Met's. Did she not sing Lulu when they first did it, or was it only Migenes then? I'm shooting at the hip here, and will have to go back and research this.
I grew up on the old Columbia mono ones, which I still think are wonderful. The Wozzeck was a live performance with Mack Harrell and Eileen Farrell, conducted by Mitropoulos. The Lulu was a Vienna production conducted by Herbert Häfner. Are these on CD now? They remain staples on my record shelf and I can't recommend them highly enough for the spirit and atmosphere of the pieces.

On that first Columbia recording of Wozzeck with Eileen Farrell, they're just guessing at pitch and throwing caution, among other things, to the winds at times!

DR Jane I had made an appointment to go with my mom for the covid vaccine. But since I wasn't old enough they just cancelled it. They are supposed to be lowering the age requirement for the helper. But it most likely won't be in time.

"Coming, dear! I'll just be a moment."

Wednesday afternoon greetings! My morning was consumed by an upset stomach, but I seem to be recovering...

I'd like to buy a G.

News broke in our extended family that our niece, Rev. Amy, has been appointed District Superintendent for the Northwest Plains District of the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. While we're very proud of her, we will miss having her family nearby. She's been pastor at Springboro UMC for the past 5 years, not far from our home.

Good Morning. Business as usual today. Except for a Parish Staff meeting at 2:00pm. Very exciting... NOT.

Congratulations, DR Ginny. Where will they be moving to?
Somewhere in northwest Ohio, where she spent 17 years of her career before they moved near here. They're deciding which school district will be the best fit for their 3 kiddos. And they have to buy a house, because they've lived in a parsonage for the past 5 years.

May they find the perfect home.

The irony is that they'd purchased a near-perfect home just a couple of years before she was assigned to the church in Springboro and it took a while for it to sell...

We had our sixth month dermatologist appointment today. Sadly our doctor was unable to return to the office. She has had a doctor from Portland filling in for her twice a week, and today was one of his days. We liked him.
Hopefully she will be able to return before we do.

DR John and DR Druxy if you haven't done so yet, I think it is time you get N95 masks to wear when you go into buildings.
I also recommend these masks. (https://www.amazon.com/BOTN-Adjustable-Certified-Comfortable-individually/dp/B08MCN848H/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2JT2JFFO2LGGM&dchild=1&keywords=botn+kf94+mask&qid=1610994850&sprefix=botn+kf94%2Caps%2C250&sr=8-5)

I realize it's putting people's lives at risk, but it will also tell us something. Those who don't want to follow that mandate can keep their masks on for sure. I am. I just found out that it's (kind of?) a sequel to Max Brooks' The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead, which I haven't read...yet. I just downloaded it from OverDrive. :)

That would be fine if wearing a mask kept you safe from the virus. It takes both people wearing a mask.

Thank you for the mask recommendation, DR Jane.

Good news from the DN of DR Ginny!

DR Laura definitely keep checking to see if they open more appointments. Here they start with one opening per time slot. But then they gradually open more. I was able to easily get appointments for my parents and my neighbor. Although now all of the appointments are full. But I'm expecting them to open more any day. But they are only at 70+.

Thank you to DRs Elmore, John G, George, JRand, and Singdaw for the nice comments about Amy’s promotion.

Thank you for the mask recommendation, DR Jane.
You are welcome. Last week while passing a neighbor on the walkway she asked about my mask. Today she stopped to thank me and say how much she likes it.

Picked up tapes, picked up some packages, picked up McDonald's for food (fast and easy), came home, ate the food, and finally listened to the new recording of Anyone Can Whistle. I thought it was okay - poorly cast for the most part and why they had Arthur Laurents narration, which seems to disappear after the first ten or fifteen minutes, I know not and I found it silly. And, because the producer of the CD doesn't really understand recording, every time singers are singing, the band recedes into the background because those mics are open. Anytime no one is singing, the band is suddenly front and center. I know it was recorded at Abbey Road and I find it a little peculiar that an engineer there would not know how to record this kind of thing or how to mic a piano and drum kit and percussion, which are always off in the distance somewhere. It certainly doesn't displace the OBC at all - that one is brilliantly recorded and produced by Mr. Lieberson, who knew from such things.
The real astonishment is that this sat dormant for a quarter of a century. The producer told everyone it was hugely expensive to do, so the question is how dopey do you have to be to lay out that kind of dough and then let it said. We had a little set-to on Facebook, said producer and I, because he came out and said this recording cost over $500,000. Which is totally BS. When I called him on it, he did what he always does, makes it seem like I do "cheap" albums and no nothing about these large cast albums. I had to remind him that I, unlike him, was nominated for a Grammy for my cheap album of Hello, Dolly, and also received raves for my cheap album of The King and I, which had a larger company than Anyone Can Whistle, all of whom were paid their weekly Equity salary to do it, something Mr. Yap did not have to do. He brags about the size of his orchestra of forty-something. I reminded him that the pit orchestra was nowhere near that size so why do it. Add some strings, sure, as we did for Dolly and The King and I, but King and I's orchestra is bigger to begin with and even adding the strings we were nowhere near forty-something. He also kept saying "Do you know what it costs to record at Abbey Road and all those musicians?" I informed him that I knew exactly what it cost, which was basically the same cost as recording at The Hit Factory in NY, where we did The King and I and several others, and of course all the musicians were union and we had to abide by the stupid AFM fifteen minutes of music per session, something Mr. Yap did not have to deal with in the UK. So, taking all that into consideration - that we paid the same for the studio, we paid much more for the talent and musicians, and we had to have more sessions because of union rules - we cost nowhere near $500,000 and, in fact, nowhere near half that. It takes a real kind of special to make an album for over $500,000, especially as I assume he took no money to do his job. I'd say it was nigh unto impossible, so, in my opinion, he's lying.
Anyway, I didn't hate it but I sure didn't love it. Julia McKenzie has none of the style or charm of Angela Lansbury (or the fun), John Barrowman sings nice but is NOT a Hapgood at all, and Maria Friedman's voice really irritates me and she has none of the acting chops of Lee Remick. The supporting cast is very ordinary. The booklet has nice photos of the producer who is also the executive producer and takes both credits on the credit page.
He's a really offensive little person and, for me, his work is average and no more. This is not an album I'll be listening to a lot. It was nice to hear the extra music, but enjoyment-wise it didn't really add anything to what we have on the B'way cast album.
-

I realize it's putting people's lives at risk, but it will also tell us something. Those who don't want to follow that mandate can keep their masks on for sure. Let's hope there aren't any "I told ya so's"

Those are cool! I wouldn't want to walk up them every single day, but they're really fun to look at.
Berkeley has some stairs like these. Nice walks.

Thank you. I'd decided I didn't need it. Glad to know I really don't.

Gratuitous post No. 108!

Jane, I wear double masks in public. Not planning on changing anytime soon.
-
I went to the market today to get a rotisserie chicken and a few essentials I didn't have. I have my double masks and my gloves on at the checkout line. The cashier asks me, "Do you want a free hand sanitizer?" I said no, because I thought she was talking about a spritz on my hands. But no. They were giving away bottles of hand sanitizer, so I took one.

While I don't wear gloves I keep sanitizing my hands.

I prefer soap. The alcohol in the hand sanitizer dries out my skin.

Starting to watch Pfhfft with Judy Holliday and Jack Lemmon. I have a feeling it's not going to be as good as the cast.
-
At least it's short.

bk, thanks for your book report on Whistle.

News broke in our extended family that our niece, Rev. Amy, has been appointed District Superintendent for the Northwest Plains District of the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. While we're very proud of her, we will miss having her family nearby. She's been pastor
at Springboro UMC for the past 5 years, not far from our home.
Wow! Congratulations to you niece and May God bless her and guide her in her new path

Got a grocery delivery this evening, but found I'd forgotten a few items, so have another delivery arriving bright and early tomorrow morning.

I am ok with using Germ-X. I also carry hand cream.

Usually I can figure it out, but what was Hardee's really selling with that sign?
Angus burgers

The stupid mistake I made with my shopping was that I meant to buy 20 lemons. I have to drink fresh lemon juice (diluted) every day, as per my doctor it will make my system more alkaline to help prevent the formation of bladder and kidney stones. Well, I had meant to buy 20 lemons, but somehow I didn't do it right and they only delivered one.
-
He also offered the option of potassium citrate powder, constituted. However, I tried it and it didn't agree with me. So, lemons it is.
-
OK, I’m addicted to The Great British Bake-off.

That's a good addition to have, DR John G.

Singdaw, does it have to be lemons, or do other citrus fruit help, also, or do they not work as well as lemons?
-
Yes.

Although I really don't imbibe either.

Interesting question, DR George. I can ask him. I just know he said lemons.

I’ve been told limes are good, too.

Good night, everyone.

And do they have to be fresh lemons (or limes), or can one get the bottle of RealLemon (or RealLime)?
-
Getting a bottle at Costco or Smart Foodservice (formerly Cash & Carry) could potentially be a good option. Then, you wouldn't have to get rid of all those peels!
-
Just a thought. :)
-
And now, I'm off.
Until later.

It is the citric acid that smooths out the rough edges of the stones.

I don't know about this but I do know my stomach hurts when I drink lemonade.

Isn't it real lemon juice? Just without all the lemon bits? I would think that it would otherwise be the same juice.

Years ago I learned cooking and baking with lemons vs bottled juice made a big difference in taste.

I only asked WHY since I expect it would taste terrible.

Oh, I see. I figure that for the volume of lemon juice that you'd get out of actual lemons, the RealLemon juice might cost less. One bottle would certainly would take up less space than the number of lemons needed to get the equivalent amount of juice. Of course, it's only a guess on my part.
