Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a doozy, and now it is time for you to post until the doozy day cows come home.

George, I have never heard that other song you mentioned last night.  Just sayin’.

"Make the Most of Your Music" was written for the 1987 original London revised version of Follies.  James Goldman rewrote (some of?) the book and Sondheim wrote some new songs and dropped some existing songs.  I guess it had a less depressing ending.

Today, the family is going to my mom's for tacos for lunch.  Before I knew what we were going to have today, my sister asked me a few days ago what I would like for my birthday in a couple of weeks.  I said tacos!  When I found out that we're going to have tacos this Saturday (which is now today), I was fine with that and am looking forward to two days of tacos! :D

I recorded Make the Most of Your Music for The Stephen Sondheim Album - the opening cut with Brent Barrett. We've done it several times at Kritzerland. And I put it in the Lost and Unsung revue.

Yesterday was a weird day, as well. My right leg has been doing poorly since that Thursday encounter with the Fed Ex delivery and my jerk neighbor Mark, so I limped about in pain no amount of Advil would relieve yesterday.  I also felt poorly and spent too much time hobbling to ther bathroom. I went to bed around 8:15. This morning is the second time this week that I have stepped into a puddle of cat vomit, so there's some malaise getting all of us down.

DR George, it's my understanding that after the London production, that version of Follies was pulled and not available for performances.

In 1983 or so, I was talking to Steve and he said he was busy with new songs for the London version of Follies. After a pause, I said something like, Why? I think that score's mighty good as it is. Steve's answer was, Me, too.  Then he explained that it was Goldman's idea to rethink it, and he felt obligated to go along with it.

Thirty-six years ago today Sunday in the Park with George won the Pulitzer prize. A composer "friend" whose one musical was a flop called me a couple of years ago to ask how he could win the Pulitzer. I didn't laugh, and I told him what to do. I really wanted to ask my "friend" why he didn't ask me to orchestrate his show,

I woke up at six in the a.m. from a dream that was completely absurd, tried to do the math and figured I'd only had six hours of sleep (I was awake and reading last night), and fortunately, without much effort, fell back into sleep and stayed there till eight o' the clock. Which just happens to be feeding time here, but thankfully, someone else fed the Monster. However, the dream I had fallen into when I went back to sleep at six was a combination of both adding to the previous one, and of being awake thinking about it and trying to remember and put together its various elements. All of this was Dream #2, mind you. To call any of the two absurd would be the understatement of the millenium. What's even more bizarre is that I'm, even now, getting little flashes of parts I hadn't remembered earlier.

Sort of. Yesterday morning, when Fed Ex rang my bell, I asked if he were the driver who left all those cartons in the vestibule, and hesaid no. I told him my dilemma and asked him if he would bring it up to the mailboxes. He very kindly did that, so the carton sits in the lobby across from our mailboxes.  I asked Ann and Jen if they would help me, but they are off to Boston because of Ann's mother's health issues. So, it sits there until my leg is well enough to deal with it.

Watching the Judy Kaye-Frank Gorshin tour of On the 20th Century. The video is faded, but it clearly shows that Judy could outsing anyone on the stage and Gorshin couldn't sing. Songs were cut and he does little with the comedy.

It's been a pleasant Saturday. I did two (count 'em) short but worthy stints of work outdoors, just enough to squelch the guilt for not doing more.

Then I ate a free Popeye's chicken meal. And why was it free, I hear you asking? It was free because when Nathan was out he went through the drive-thru just to grab a fish sandwich for himself, and the girl handed him a bag with a large box of chicken in it. He pointed out the mistake and she got him the sandwich, and when he started to hand the box of chicken to her, she said "no, I can't take anything back, it's yours, enjoy". So we all enjoyed. Big box, too, at least a dozen pieces.

It's the third day in a row we've had chicken here, and it was Popeye's two days ago, and I don't think it had been a week since we had some Popeye's before that.

DR Jane, here they are only doing the second shot 3-4 months later. So nobody has received their second shot yet. But they give you an appointment automatically. Mine is the beginning of August.

I only read the side effects a few hours after I came home yesterday. As I didn't want to be a hypochondriac. But I had all the symptoms that over 50% experience. Headachy. A lot of fatigue. And it's a bit sore on the spot but not much. My brother-in-law had his vaccine the day before me and he has been feeling the same symptoms.

Back from a fun dinner with an old friend from the Bluth Brothers days - dear reader Jeanne knows her, too. Lots of reminiscing.  My chopped salad - turkey, salami, and tomatoes - no garbanzo beans, and a Dijon vinaigrette, was actually great, so I think that will become a regular happening now. Not too much food and it felt light.

Interesting.  Thanks for the info, Larry.

Because I was curious, here is a listing of past winners of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama:
https://www.pulitzer.org/prize-winners-by-category/218

Years ago, just a year or two after Rent opened on Broadway, I was involved a local musical revue of the musicals that won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.  This was my idea and the director and music director really liked it, so we did it.  We did three songs from each of the shows, and I got to sing the Sunday in the Park with George songs.  We also included songs from Oklahoma! because in 1944 Rodgers and Hammerstein won a special Pulitzer Prize special citation for the show.

I thought Make the Most of Your Music and Ah, but Underneath were written because Daniel Massey and Diana Rigg couldn’t handle the original songs vocally.

That might make sense for Diana Rigg, but I think "Make the Most of Your Music" is a pretty darned difficult song...especially that held last note, and Daniel Massey nailed it!

I listened to it. Really enjoyed a lot of it, but found the ending somewhat unsatisfying. I found the story engrossing as it went from one generation to the next. I applaud the natural way the transgender love story was handled. I found the different lives interesting. But I grew less and less patient with the sister who passed for white.
