Well, you've read the notes, the notes told the West Side Story story, and now it is time for you to post until the West Side cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: CONGENIAL!
-
Thanks for the WSS review, BK. I definitely want to see it.
-
And now, I'm off to bed. I need to get up earlier than I really want (for a Sunday, at least), and make sure that I get to the performing arts center in time.
Have a good day, all!
-
BK, I realize this isn’t Wednesday, but I hope you take the time to address the issue, sooner, rather than later. I have not yet received my copy of your newest book. I am sure that this was not intentional, but my friend, Micheal, has checked every day for it. I hope you can solve this before I am forced to contact Amazon. Especially since I didn’t buy it on Amazon.
-
Here is something we might discuss today. The TV commercials for the touring company of MY FAIR LADY describe the show as the most perfect musical of all time.
Hmm, I am not sure I agree with that pronouncement. What musical would you call the most “perfect musical of all time?
-
TCB, are you serious? All books were sent out as soon as we got them, last April. UPDATE: It was shipped with all the others. Tracking says the label was created but isn't in the system - which means the book is probably sitting in some post office somewhere behind some desk or cabinet. We'll get one out to you again.
-
I mean, I'm assuming you're talking about Some Days Are Murder.
-
Good morning, friends.
-
Sorry I was so errant and truant yesterday. It was a packed day, filled with a work shift and also with an unexpected trip to Urgent Care. But all is well - or will be, fairly quickly.
-
This morning is a big Lessons & Carols service at the church where I work. Big. We're talking choirs, bell choirs, and an orchestra.
-
Going off to read bk's Notes now.
-
Cool - thanks, bk, for summarizing your thoughts about West Side Story. Compelling reading.
-
Good morning.
-
Good morning, all!
-
Again, I slept well until some time around 3:00. Ir's amazing how three cats can take so much bed space.
-
Yes, one and all, Mrs Palmer, DR Ginny's mother-in-law, was something else. I adored her, but she was strong-willed, bossy, opinionated, and suffered no fools. I can just see her apoplexy after that Messiah.
I personally find countertenors an acquired taste, because most of them aren't that good. For Messiah, and most baroque music, I prefer a good contralto-mezzo-soprano. I suppose the most famous countertenor role in 20th century music is Oberon in Britten's opera A Midsummer Night's Dream, and I do not mind the sound there sionce it's part of his musical palette for the fairies.
-
My preference is for the infamous PDQ Bach's bargaincountertenor.
-

BK, calm down! It was a joke, although apparently not a funny one. I was talking about the new book you are starting on January first. Sorry. Blame it on the drugs and my weird sense of humor.
-
DR JohnG, thanks for the Sydney Opera House link. I liked the orchestra size and speedy tempi, the conductor and chorus, the soprano - who sings the original, more difficult version of "Rejoice Greatly" - tenor, and bass. I thought the countertenor was often unintelligible, and I missed the "heft" from a woman's voice. Countertenors remind me of those delciate Susuki-method violinists with their dainty sound as opposed to those od violinists from Toscanini's day with the strong bowing.

We had spaghetti three times at our house last week.

BTW, the original 1742 performance of Messiah in Dublin used an alto, Susannah Cibber, who was an established stahe actress, and no countertenor. All performances after that until Händel's death in 1759, used various combinations of soloists including countertenors and sometimes more than four soloists, and Händel revised the score to adjust. Only one recording exists that offers every variant written for the work, and that is McGegan's, using six soloists including my late friend William Parker:

This is a great topic.
-
(I'm glad you got it, Elmore.)
-
This morning I am listening to the Christmas secrion of Messiah, conducted by Harry Christophers and his group The Sixteen, but my favorite recording remains Sir Colin Davis' 1965 recording, which was the first to make an attempt to remove Messiah from its 19th century pomp and heaviness. I think the soloists are superb, and he catches the right balance between letting the music dance when it needs and the austerity and heaviness required when the story moves there. And for the budget-minded, it's nopw a two-fer!
-
(I'm glad you got it, Elmore.)
I am a huge Charlie Brown fan.
-
Good morning, all.
-
I have that Phillips recording. That and A soulful Messiah.
-
Not an entirely successful night of sleep with the new machine.
-
Vibes for Singdaw and all singing this morning.
-
Two!
-
Well, while I was doing kitty cleanup, the recording moved on to Part 2 of Messiah. I guess I'll listen to all of it.
-
Sunday!
-
I enjoyed MR BK's take on WEST SIDE STORY. I agree with all he wrote.
And he put his finger exactly on what I missed and didn't even realize it - the humor. Gloria and Velma's lines have disappeared......
And what he said about AMERICA, I have already said in so many words.......
Anyway - it is still recommended with caveats.....but worth seeing....for the SCORE and the SINGING.
-
I am watching some episodes of THE MONKEES on Cozi TV.
-
I started perusing Facebook using the Opera Browser and it works....with a glitch now and then....so maybe it's something about my Firefox browser that is the problem.

I gave up on Firefox years ago.

Sunday morning greetings! Richard is “at” church via Zoom. The virtual realm does Amanda’s piano playing no justice whatsoever.
-
Good morning, all.
-
I could not been more exhausted last night and still been able to walk, but today fortunately was able to be a serious ME day, and so it is.
It was raining too hard for me to want to tote my keyboard and all out of the theater last night, so I opted to just pack it all up and leave it for today. In a couple of hours I'll enjoy a leisurely drive up there to retrieve it.
-
My preference is for the infamous PDQ Bach's bargaincountertenor.
Oh man, just hearing a single reference like that makes me want to take all the albums out. How many years - no, decades - has it been since I've listened to them?
-
I've moved from Messiah to Danny Kaye's wonderful album of Hans Christian Andersen and The Court Jester.
Life could not better be!

From DR George:
My sister's boyfriend saw this kind of bumper sticker on a car today:
I had a co-worker that gave me rides home from work. There was a slightly steep ramp leading out of the garage, and with everyone leaving at once it could get congested. She would get frustrated with the cars that would pull up right behind her and call them idiots (to me, not them-lol). Until then I never realized it was a problem.
-
Speaking of idiots who get too close to the cars in front of them, we had one a couple of days ago. This woman seemed to think tailgating on a mountain road was a safe thing to to >:(
-
This one is funny (https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/31wWBfFIkvL._AC_.jpg)
-
The first one is more likely to get the message across, though Keith tapping the breaks and slowing down only worked for half a minute with the idiot lady.
-

Sometimes I just take my foot off the gas and slow down just a bit until the idiot behind me passes me. I, of course, let them.
;)
-
Everything went well. :)
-
I love it when DR elmore3003 talks about recordings.
-
I got DR Laura's joke. <heart>
-
I didn't (initially) get DR TCB's. But now I do! :)
-
:)
-
I'm up, I'm up - about seven hours of sleep and I'll shortly be on my way to storage, putting gas in the motor car, the mail place, the Apple Store and then home. Some ME day.

No passing lane for miles and miles. Once she passed us she did the same tailgating to every single car she was behind. Over an hour later she turned off, but of course she never got where she was going any faster than had she driven safely.

I now have windows 11.
-
Up from a nap
-
I have cleaning to do.
-
OK, back to the video of Handel's Messiah. The countertenor could use help with more than his diction. His shirt comes open under his bowtie. Looks really weird.
-
The new Britney Spears musical is trying out in Washington. Emily Skinner is Cinderella’s wicked stepmother.

Good afternoon!

Don't know if anyone saw this, but CBS Sunday Morning did a feature on See's Candy, which was just discussed on HHW:

-
I like West Side Story mostly for the music.
-
Three!
-
Sondheim had a job on the movie Beat the Devil. Anybody remember what it was?
-
Clapper boy. I just Googled it.
-
Good afternoon.
-
Ann and Jen came down around 1:00 and assembled my new tea cart for me. I needed something that rolled because I can no longer carry the three cats' dishes or mine because of my right leg's deterioration. I can now wheel plates and bottles to and from the kitchen. After it was assembled they went out to the farmer's market and later brought me back a delicious sausage roll from a new bakery. After I fed the cats I took a bath, and now I'm ready for a nap.
-
I love this photo of Streetcat Bob in his Santa suit.
-
That was very nice of Ann and Jen, Elmore.
-
I forgot to say Welcome home, DR JANE!
-
Up from a nap
I wish I could take a nap.
-
Instead I am doing laundry on this rainy day.
-
Very thoughtful DR ELMORE....
-
I forgot to say Welcome home, DR JANE!
Thank you.
-
My aunt has decided she just wants to tell us what she wants rather than come to the house......so the entire day was spent on the phone with she and my niece.
We think we got them what they want.....they didn't want to do a Face Time on the phone....they wanted to tell us "the plates in the big cabinet....." ANYWAY hopefully tomorrow we can move on to the other 23 people on the list.
-
So much for my ME day.

That was fun, thank you :) I did follow their story during the pandemic.

Goodness, I hope they got what they wanted. Not even an exchange of texts with photos?

I am just reading the notes now.

It was depressing reading all of the precautions needed to enter the theater :(
-
How did the cookies go over, Laura?

When I read stuff like that, or see pictures of masked audience members, I think, “I’d rather stay home.”
-
We don't want to wear a mask at a theater, but then we have a good sized tv.
-
I look forward to hearing about Bruce & DR Jeanne's lunch today. Did you eat outside?
-
Richard and I have each spent time today at the package-wrapping station I set up on our dining room table. We’re usually at the table in the basement that I’ve talked about here in the past. This year our basement is not fully put back together after the waterproofing and I figured Richard didn’t want to go up and down the steps a lot. And we won’t be needing our dining room because, if all goes as planned, we’ll be with Charlotte and her parents.
-

Oh! I didn't know that it was available, yet.

Oh! I didn't know that it was available, yet.
It popped up today. I had two choices, take it or decline. Keith said to take it.

How did the cookies go over, Laura?
The kids seemed to enjoy them. I have blanket permission to give the kids cookies any time I bring them.
-
It was depressing reading all of the precautions needed to enter the theater :(
We have to do most of that to get into Gammage for the Broadway tours. No purses; items in clear baggies only. Metal detectors. Masks required.
The local theater has a temperature check, masks suggested. They do have special showings that require vaccination cards, but I haven't switched my tickets over to that. I should.
I'm ok with it, except I think the baggie thing is excessive.
-
While Ann was visiting today, she was watching Annabelle's interaction with me, and her comment was "that cat really loves you."
-
That, she does!
-
I felt like a nap, but didn't get up the gumption to do it.
-
Just puttering around.
-
I mutter while I putter.
-
On This Day in 1957, The Music Man debuted on Broadway.

Ye Gods, Zaneeta!

I would want to switch to proof of vaccinations. The restaurants in Palm Springs required it to eat inside.
-
We were required to be vaccinated to visit Keith's aunt & uncle. Of course we didn't need to prove we have had them :)

Starting to watch Desk Set, with its great Christmas party scene.
-
That looks like Charles Phoenix's Astro-weenie Christmas Tree -- only bigger!
-
Finished the Bergman documentary. He sounds like a real piece of work. But he made some great movies from the demons he lived with. And it was touching to Liv Ullmann. She broke down in tears remembering him as her best friend.
-
Thanks DR GINNY - I was wondering if the gift-wrapping table had been a casualty of the flood.
-
I just watched a very funny French film from France called Elena's Men.....starring Miss Ingrid Bergman and several gentlemen.....including Mel Ferrer and Jean Marais.
It is hilarious.....and in beautiful color. It is available on TCM ONDemand and is highly recommended by the likes of me. Directed by Jean Renoir.
-
I love Elena’s Men.
-
In the Bergman movie, one of the funniest scenes was a compilation of outtakes of cat refusing to do what Bergman wanted. Apparently the cat didn’t care how dictatorial Bergman thought he could be on the set. Cat 1, Bergman 0.
-
Jane, lunch thing is tomorrow.
-
Some ME day this turned out to be. I haven't stopped doing stuff and now I have to mosey on over to Vitello's for dinner and show.

Hi, Jane.
Hi George.
-
Good night, friends.
-
'night
-
My niece is on her way to this, too!
How many cats does she have?
Five cats and also five chickens...and never the twain shall meet.
-
LOL, I suppose that wouldn't be a good idea. At once we have had three large dogs and three cats. Also we had four cats, two gerbils, and two large dogs. Then we only had four cats and one dog.

Back from a lovely cabaret show at Vitello's - I had a chicken Caesar that only took an hour and fifteen minutes to prepare.

Can't wait to read about the cabaret show.

Tomorrow, it's back to work. :P
