Well, you've read the notes, you've filed the notes away for a rainy day, and now it is time for you to post until the rainy day cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: QUIDNUNC!
-
And here's BK's latest millstone!!
-
Notes considered. Filed.
-
Good morning, friends.
-
Tell me more about this backstory.
-

-
Congratulations to Mister BK on his lofty new perch in the HHW firmament!!!!
-
~~~CONTINUED PAIN BEGONE VIBES~~~ for DR John G.!!!!!!!
-
And ~~~CONTINUED IMPROVED HEALTH VIBES~~~ for so many, including DR elmore3003, DR Jane, DH Richard... Hope I'm not forgetting anyone.
-
DR Jrand72, thank you for the updates on yesterday. Sounds like it was lovely, and glad that you survived the gauntlet. I would be exhausted. And a rehearsal on top of it all!
-
I have been playing with Merlin, a phone app on all things birds. You can use your phone to record bird song, and it tells you what they are. There's an extensive library, and it's keyed to your region of the US.
There are also plant apps that allow you to photograph a plant with your phone, and it tells you what it is.
Ain't technology grand?
-
Right now, I'm hearing American Robins and Black-capped Chickadees.
-
And I've identified all the house plants the DH is tending to.
-
So I'm up-to-date, nature-wise.
-
I'm well informed.
-
And well intentioned.
-
I'm a well of well, as it were.
-
Those documentaries sound interesting, BK.
Listening to the demos of four songs from Adam Guettel's new Days of Wine and Roses:
https://www.adamguettel.com/days-of-wine-and-roses
-
Good morning, all!
-
Given that I napped most of the day, I slept quite well last night. Today I must deal with the fallout: messages to my ophthalmologist about a new appointment, another call to Margaret, Dr. Kassapidis' surgical assistant about the hip surgery - I've already made two phone calls that she has not returned - and a call to Indiana University about my second payment. The lady in the music dept. who handles this is giving me the same runaround she did in January, and I do not understand her behavior.
-
We finished Sanditon last night. I liked much of it, but I think the writer, whose past work I've admired, got sloppy.
-
DR singdaw, I first encountered Owen Brannigan in the Angel-EMI series of Gilbert & Sullivan operas conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent. Britten wrote two roles for him: Bottom in Midsummer Night's Dream and Noye in the wonderful Noye's Fludde.
-
I think I first encountered Elizabeth Harwood, one of my favorite lyric-coloratura sopranos, on the Angel-EMI recording of Händel's Messiah, conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras. I remember seeing her on a couple of BBC opera broadcasts on PBS in the 1970s, La Traviata and Tales of Hoffmann, in which she sang all four women's roles. For the english Opera Group she played Galatea in Händel's Acis and Galatea in 1968 at the Montreal Expo, so I was surprised to read in Britten's letters that he was not thrilled to have her record Tytania in his recording of A Midsummer Night's Dream. She also recorded the lead role of The Merry Widow for Herbert von Karajan. She died too young from cancer.
Good morrow.
-
How can it be May 18th already??
Seriously....HOW?
-
Or good marrow, if you are eating ossobuco.
-
Which I am not, currently.
-
If I eat it tomorrow, would it be marrow on the morrow?
-
I imagine the working lot among us are jubilant about tomorrow being Friday. I remember Thursdays being days of joy while working. Just one more day.
Of course, that day -- the next one, that is -- the FRIDAY -- was not always perfect, but it WAS the last day of the work week.
-
Or will I be morose on the morrow?
-
Of course, you could also eat a marshmallow on the morrow.
-
Moreover.
-
What a lot of malarkey.
-
I sort of miss that "Oh, boy! Tomorrow is Friday!" euphoria.
Now, I am happy if I can remember that it IS Friday.
That's not to say I am not compos mentis. I simply do not measure my days into a work week and then a weekend.
I have no work goals to accomplish before the end of a work day or work week.
Sigh. Who knew retirement would be, in some ways, discombubulating?
-
I recommend that you administer minestrone, mister.
-
Yes, I ponder such things.
But I am by no means regretful of being a retiree.
Not. One. Bit.
My mom told me I needed to find a job of some kind. Something to occupy my mind a day or two a week. Not for money, though. For structure. For routine.
She was probably right, but I am stubborn. I may one day seek out such a structure for my sanity, but it is not this day!!
-
If a woodchuck could chuck wood, would he chuck any wood at singdaw?
I wonder.
Time for coffee.
Almost past time for coffee. I could eat a bite, as well.
Thanks for the musical memories, DR elmore3003.
Yes indeed! Good to hear those names again.
I never acquired any of the Sir Malcolm Sargent G&S, and I imagine I should plug that hole in my life.
-
I slept okay. I had some dreams, none of which I remember, except for telling myself that I should remember one of them, which I promptly forgot.
-
I’m still prone. I haven’t checked on the pain yet.
After three months of whirlwind activity, I have nothing on my calendar for the next week and a half, except for attending a couple of things - starting with a Cabaret on Saturday evening that I know will be wholly enjoyable.
-
Kitty cleanup is finished. I am up-to-date on bills payments, I've send needed emails, and I need to make the bed.
The dumbass Republicans voted to keep lyin; conartist George Santos in Congress. At leaqst we publicly know who these dumbasses are now since the vote isxon record.
My new cart and cat tree have arrived. I hope that Jen, who is much more mechnically adept and much more agile than I, has time to assemble them for me.
-
Congratulations on your freedom, DR ChasSmith.
-
We will want photos of the new cat tree, occupied, once assembled.
-
DR John G., perhaps you should not shake before stirring.
Like BK, I was at the Comedy Store exactly once. Mine was in 1987, with an out of town guest who had insisted on seeing Howie Mandel. At that time I only knew him from St. Elsewhere. I have no memory of anyone who might have appeared with him. He was quite the fidgeting spectacle to these eyes, but he was entertaining enough and his OCD and other issues were never any kind of a secret, even back then, as he was already making plenty of jokes about himself.
-
It’s funny, though (see what I did there??) — how, in spite of how much I love comedy, most stand-up wears out its welcome with me so quickly, and isn’t something I gravitate to. Other people can’t get enough of it.
-
Good morning!
-
Wordle: 3/6
-
No, wait, I was in another one of those places! Again, just once. What was the one on Melrose? The Improv? I went to a traffic school held there one weeknight.
You could do that once every so often to keep a ticket from going on your record, a very good deal. I’d been to one years before, and decided this time might as well be entertaining. And it was! I don’t remember if they had actual police officers who liked doing comedy, or if actual comedians were trained in the laws and did it, but it was truly funny. And yes, educational.
-
I have an appointment with the acupuncturist this morning. Ouch.
-
No change in pain level.
-
Sorry, DR John G.
-
I love that idea, DR ChasSmith. And yes, a very good deal.
-
Such a deal!
-
Today may, in fact, BE a rainy day here. Thunderstorms are predicted.
-
Congrats to MR BK on his millstone.
-
Sticking vibes for DR JOHN G.
-
Enjoy your week and half DR CHAS SMITH.
-
The PITA who joined the cast last week decided that he needed to occupy the director's complete attention last night for about twenty minutes clarifying his movements and motivations - while the rest of us stood around.
We are in the rehearsal center and so once we get onstage - most of the blocking will have to be modified....and of course three cast members were missing so it was not easy....but that's show business, I guess.
-
No change in pain level.
Darn. :-\
-
One of the main problems with using high school students in the cast or crew is that they have graduation rehearsal and sports schedules and other activities that interfere with the schedule.
The End.
-
Movements and motivations!
Back histories!
Just a few of the things that make theeder the rich experience it is!
There's not much to repor on the audition front, I'm sad to say. Turnout was still too low. I think I'm done having to show up for these, though if there should be another, hey, it's easy money. But I don't think they're fully cast yet. Looked to me like it's phone call time.
Three of the people who showed up last night were from my Carrie cast. Sadly, they were three of the less skilled ones. (Whew - let it not be forgotten how desperate we were then.) They could work out better for Pippin, very likely.
One truly non-capable person that no one knew showed up. To make some joke about it wouldn't even feel right. After her two song attempts, she got concise thank you's from the "table" that even I thought was a little abrupt. Ouch.
DR GEORGE's story reminds me:
Once I was directing and choreographing a production of BYE BYE BIRDIE....The schedule called for running Act One on Monday & Tuesday and Act Two on Wednesday and Thursday....and the show on Friday.
Act Two on Wednesday looked great - so all day at work I was thinking, since Act One needed more work...we would do Act One again on Thursday.
So I got to rehearsal and announced tonight we are doing Act One. It was awful - worse than ever....I was crushed and didn't even give notes just sent everyone home.
I was complaining to my assistant director who finally said: "Well, Jack, everyone came in planning to do Act Two so that's what they were prepared for....Act One was sort of surprise....."
Since then, I always do what's on the schedule....I may add a scene or song or two at the end of the evening if we have time....but I don't surprise them anymore.
-
Notes from the trenches!
-
Oh DR CHAS SMITH - I am familiar with such painful auditions...I don't know which is a greater stumbling block - the lack of talent or the lack of self awareness.
-
Exactly. Well said, DR Jrand72.
-
the lack of self awareness.
An eternal mystery.
The acupuncture didn’t help.
-
This morning, during the course of my work, I have come across two different families that consist of 10 people, mostly young children, where the household income is at $30,000 per year or less.
And I have to wonder...
How does that work?
And is it responsible to have so many children when you can't provide for them financially?
-
If the rethugilans get their way we'll have many many more of these families. No doubt the kids will each get a free gun at biryh
Just had some fun doing some detective work. I found what I was looking for, so that my instincts were proven right once again. If you'd like to know what I'm talking about - PM me.
-
Hello, everyone.
-
I put my car in the shop today. I'm always expecting to hear that it needs major work, but no, they tell me no. It's 12 years old, but has low miles. I got so disgusted with the Volvo dealers when I had my beloved Volvo and started taking it to an independent. They've saved me so much money! This car, an Audi, has needed very little work and the independent doesn't make up needed repairs, like some of the dealers do. So I got off cheaply -- again.
-
However, last week, probably when I was at the bank, someone scratched the passenger side, an 18 inch long scratch. Sigh. This is why I no longer buy new cars. It's upsetting enough on an old one.
-
The second Uber driver told me that his day job is testing autonomous vehicles. Eeeekkkk! No way I'd want that job! The idea of a driverless car makes me very uneasy.
I agree with you.
John G, I'm sorry you're having so much trouble with pain and surprised that the acupuncture did n't help. It's usually very effective with pain. Do you stretch at all? I have neck and shoulder problems much like you described every day due to old injuries. I stretch for an hour every morning and find it helpful. It doesn't make me pain-free, but some days I can stretch the tightness out for a few hours.
A wonderful book on stretching:
Bob Anderson's STRETCHING
Easy-to-follow diagrams and a classic in the field
On YouTube I like Jasper at Milton Chiropractic (UK).
Vibes you find some relief soon.
I just spent an hour searching for a new cover for my tablet. Unfortunately my current case, that is peeling and kind of falling apart, is no longer available.
-
It it had been available I would have ordered a new one months ago.
-
I like it as it is cushioned and soft, unlike most cases for tablets.
-
I finally broke down and ordered the softest one I could find.
-
If the photo on the GrubHub solicitation I received is to be believed, they think I should order pizza, eggrolls, chicken wings, and cinnamon buns.
Isn't that what you usually order? ;)
-
When I fall asleep reading it doesn't hurt as much with a soft case.
-
When I roll over in bed onto my tablet after falling asleep, soft is comfy ;D
Speaking of fast food, Oscar Meyer is going to start calling their roving wienermobiles "frankmobiles," and fans are not happy.
Something is helping in terms of a stretch. But only when I do it.
Watching The Slipper and the Rose. Great score, game cast (I never miss a Dame Edith Evans musical), and lousy direction. Plus the choreography is a Mary Poppins rehash from Marc Breaux.
Wonderful shot, DR Jane.
-
There was a really unique bird song I heard this morning that I'd like to try to identify tomorrow morning.
-
With luck I will.
-
But I'm fading fast.
-
I will try to get us off page seven.
-
Which BK does not care for.
-
So I'm told.
-
Sad that they are retiring the Metropolitan Opera's grand old production of Aida.
-
With its massive sets.
-
What will take its place?
-
I don't know.
-
One more.
EIGHT
-
Good night, friends.
-
I am curious if DR singdaw will find out his bird ID.
-
I have PM'd MR BK to solve the mystery.
-
I hope you like your new case DR JANE.
-
DR JEANNE and I feel exactly the same way about driverless cars.
-
We did ACT TWO twice - with two substitute actors - and we made it through.....there will be some changes made....but we are getting there.
-
There was an article about the local BIG Equity Theatre in Indy....about all of the "famous" people who have done shows there.
The headline in the print edition was: MANY FAMOUS STARS AT IRP.
Unfortunately it is the Indiana Repertory Theatre - IRT.
-
I remember vividly that the Artistic Director of IRP used to tie up the rights to many plays just coming available for professional production....saying she "might" do them.....so that my friend Bryan could not do them at his theatre.
And of course most of them she never did.
-
And before her we had execrable Libby Appel who lost almost a third of the theatre's base subscribers.....and hired her son to do all the music for her stupid versions of plays and all of her untalented friends from NYC to do roles in her shows - some say....not I....I don't think.
Then she moved on to DR JANE's territory and was the AD at, I think, the Oregon Shakespearean Wigwam and Storm Door Company.
-
She did an S/M Hamlet that had the title character in a studded black leather jockstrap and spinning on a giant game show wheel.....
-
I shall leave you with that mind picture.
-
Stunning image, JRand. Even in my pain, I felt a twinge more.
-
Loved The Slipper and the Rose for all its faults. Watched the Sherman Brothers extra but couldn’t take anymore.
-
I am curious if DR singdaw will find out his bird ID.
If he doesn't, I can give him a bird!
-
There was an article about the local BIG Equity Theatre in Indy....about all of the "famous" people who have done shows there.
The headline in the print edition was: MANY FAMOUS STARS AT IRP.
Unfortunately it is the Indiana Repertory Theatre - IRT.
:o
-
I remember vividly that the Artistic Director of IRP used to tie up the rights to many plays just coming available for professional production....saying she "might" do them.....so that my friend Bryan could not do them at his theatre.
And of course most of them she never did.
How rude! >:(
Um….thank you?
Anti pain vibes for John
DQ is offering a new dipped cone. Churro Dipped Cone. Had to try it.
The churro flavor is pretty good. Not sure I’d get it again though.
-
I agree, Rodzinski. Liked the cinnamon flavor.
-
Good night, all.
-
Good night and may it be pain-free, John G.
-
I've answered the private messages. :)
-
George, please do an Amazon review.
Of course, I just HAVE to live two blocks from DQ! ::)
;)
-
2 blocks would be brutal for me. Like when I lived across the street from a Taco Bell in grad school.
-
The next page is not far off.
-
Why, it might even be said that it is near.
-
How near, my dears?
-
Tis here! Page NINE.
I will write some notes shortly.
-
And hopefully, whilst I am writing notes shortly, George will be writing a review shortly. I hope he enjoyed the book.
-
Where's page ten?
-
Tonight's rehearsal went quite well
-
We ran the show, and only one person (Nurse/Mrs./Blair Daniels) was missing.
-
She was feeling sick, but assured the director that it wasn't Covid-related.
-
Which is very good, because I've been driving her to and from rehearsals the last several days.
-
Gratuitous Post #250!!
I did enjoy the book!
-
But it always takes me a while to write something. ::)
-
...of substance, anyway. ;)
-
We don't have rehearsal tomorrow (first Friday off in quite a while), so I'll be able to play Phase 10 with my mom and her friends and my niece. :)
-
Saturday, however, that's going to be the day!
-
It's the cue-to-cue, and they're going to start with a mic check.
-
So, the whole rehearsal day will start at 11:00 am, and is scheduled to go until 7:30! :o
-
But we'll have breaks along the way, and I think they said that food would be brought in, but I'm not sure if I heard that correctly.
-
We also got an e-mail today saying that non-students can get a small stipend for gas!
-
It'll just be $200 for each person, but still that's a nice thing to do.
-
We won't, however, get the money until after the show is over, but that's okay.
-
I wasn't expecting it, at all.
-
I didn't get anything for driving down to Centralia for the two shows that I did there, but I didn't mind that, either.
-
So it's all good.
-
I'm enjoying the whole process and all the people are really nice.
-
The last show where I had a microphone was Hairspray five years ago.
-
Page ten is elusive.
-
Before that, it might've been when I was in Side Show in 2009.
-
Page ten is stubborn.
-
Page ten is elusive.
No, it's not.
-
As a mule.
-
PAGE TEN DANCE!!
-
Page eleven is elusive.
-
New notes are up.
-
Up are new notes.
-
I've seen them.
-
I've read them.
-
I wrote them.
-
George will appreciate the title.
-
Page eleven is elusive.
Tonight, yet is it. :D
-
George will appreciate the title.
Just saw it! :))
