Well, you've read the notes, the notes were sordid, and now it is time for you to post until the sordid cows come home.

And the word of the day is: CRUSADE!

Notes found. Interpreted.

This is the first day in many weeks that Maryland has not been under a severe thunderstorm watch.
Such a relief.
Hope everyone is enjoying a calm weather Sunday.

BK, it’s possible that Pepcid has become expensive because some medical trials have claimed that Pepcid could be effective in treating Covid.
The results are inconclusive.

Here is one article about Pepcid and Covid, but there are many others.
I wonder if people are hoarding it, and that’s why the price is so high.

I had a panic attack about everything early this morning, turned off the alarm, and went back to bed. I was reading about hip replacements yesterday, saw the list of items suggested to have rady after surgery from shower seat to handrails, and I'm rather afraid of my living alone during the recuperative period. I need to keep Mario for help, but I'm not sure I can continue to pay him. I wondering whether I should have purchased the much needed computer. I'm also not sure I 've done any good work on the ballet this past week, which worries me, and once again my funds are running low and I need another bundle of money on hand for Access-a-Ride.

For DR singdaw:
Once you said in your funny lingo
I’d play at bingo day and night
And never get the numbers right;
It never entered my mind.
Once you told me I’d stay up Sunday
And read the Mondat morning dirt
To find you’re merging with some skirt;
It never entered my mind.
Life is not complete alone;
The man who came to dinner lets me eat alone.
I confess it, I didn’t guess it,
That I would sit and mope again
And all the while I’d hope again
To see my darling dope again;
It never entered my mind.

DR Iris, it's always good to see you, but it's always so late when you show up!

Thanks, DR elmore3003!

My darling Kim Criswell has had a death in the family: her dear cat Vladimir Otto died yesterday. She posted May we meet again when I go over the rainbow bridge—it surely can’t be heaven for me if he’s not there. I know exactly how she feels.

That was an interesting vintage video compilation that you posted last night, DR George.

Just why are circus peanuts called circus peanuts?
-
That's what I'd like to know.
-
Do they perform in the center ring?
-
Do they know the Ringling Brothers personally?
-
Do they dangle from high wires like the Flying Wallendas?
-
Do they emerge impossibly from tiny cars?
-
Can they tame the savage beast?
-
Enough of this silliness.

We have a complete change of weather here. Everyone's going to be saying it feels like the first day of fall -- which of course it isn't at all, but that's indeed what it feels like.
Yesterday evening's cold front ripped through and gave us one last storm as it broke the month(?)-long grip of Southern air we'd been laboring under. Now suddenly we have a forecast high of 76 or thereabouts for today and the next few days, and it's breezy and fresh and clean and we can air out the house.

Sleeping temperatures began their return last night, though it was very early morning before my room was feeling the difference.
I daresay (oh yes, I do) we won't have to run any air conditioners this week. And isn't that lovely.

Just remembered BK mentioning the filet ‘o’ fish.
A few months ago I had one for my first time in many years, and I was absolutely shocked at how small it was. Yes, the few bites were good, but it was like eating a slider. Here one moment, gone the next. A bit of googling told me that that is indeed a fairly recent development.
I seriously despise "downsizing" of just about anything, food or otherwise. I see it as the most blatant attempt at deception that any company can take toward its customers. It ranks right up there with the à la carting of products and services -- the first and foremost example being the airline industry. These are despicable practices.

But if he had done that, the entire effect of the rhyme would have been ruined. I, for one, cannot enjoy a story or poem split into separate one-sentence posts. Gives me a headache.
I also cannot write that way, either. Not while relaying a tale of dreaming or past experiences.
I can one-line, though, on occasion.

It is, once again - and inevitably - Sunday.
Zoom chat at 12:30 p.m., though, so YAY!
-
I have to get back with my Preview Harvey movies, too. There were several early ones I wish I had, but they're not as essential for me as the great middle and late period ones, and I'm fairly well stocked on those.
-
Je suis désolé.
That is correct!
I cannot recall even a wisp of a dream.
I thought I was onto something revelatory with past dreams retaining vividness, but last night I struck out worse than Casey at the Bat.
It also was not comparable to better sleeps I have during the week. I got congested in the wee hours and had to take off my CPAP. I do not enjoy mouth-breathing, but I keep some dry-mouth lozenges handy.
Instead of feeling fresh and ready, I am dragging.

I don’t know what it means to not run the AC.
I have a vague memory of not doing so during my years living in Oakland CA.
Many a summer morning I wore a jacket until things warmed up and the fog lifted.
However, around 1996 or so, summer weather began changing. It changed sufficiently for me to go to Sears and buy an A/C for my living room window.
I also had a double fan in my bedroom window (one fan blowing in and one blowing out).
By 2010, I had bought two portable A/C units, one for living room and one for bedroom. There was no "not" running them, either. The Bay Area can get rather hot at sea level. The nights do cool down, but the heat remains in your domicile unless you cool it down.
It gets nowhere near as hot as South Carolina in August, but even here we adjust when the heat is omnipresent. When I was growing up in this small town, we had only fans, and my family had ONE fan that was kept in the living room. Windows were always open, and even though they were screened, mosquitoes (skeeters, as we called them) feasted on my young legs and arms. I don't see skeeters much any more...one or two linger around doorways, but they usually are too lazy to try to bite me.

Sorry, folks, but I misspoke about when "Mona of the Manor" would be released.
Turns out it's not until March 2024.

DR George: You have never read any of the Maupin "Tales of the City" books, as you said, but did you ever see any of the TV adaptations of the stories?

The recent Netflix series provided some interesting background to the stories.

re: BK's complaint about Circus Peanuts not tasting the way he remembers them.
I, too, used to enjoy a Circus Peanut or two...something about the smooth texture and the subdued flavor appealed to me.
Everything I used to love tastes different to me now, though. Did everything change? According to DR Chassmith, the answer seems to be YES. Even fish sandwiches cannot be relied upon to please the palate when they are only a few bites.
We have a restaurant in town that is buffet. You can also take out. If you eat in, you pay one price and eat as much as you like. If you take out, they weigh the container and you pay for the weight.
It usually works out rather well. Or, it DID. I went on a Friday a year ago because I loved their fried fish. But they posted a sign saying that fried fish would be charged by the piece....75 cents per piece of fish. We aren't talking a big fish, either, but a strip of fish. So, two or three fish strips plus veggies would end up costing more than double what the eat-in price would be.
Eat in for one set price and have as much fish as you want, or pay double and get three strips with some veggies to take out.
They said the price of fish had gone up too high to allow anyone to come in a take it out paying only by weight.

She reported that she and her husband went to a Halloween party at a friend's apartment. Upon arriving, the hostess said, "Oh, you're just in time. We're ducking for apples."
"Ducking for apples?" Parker remarked. "Change one letter and that's the story of my life!"

From DR Iris:
I agree about needing a change of scenery.
Am unable to do much right now other than paperwork, selling my mom’s place, and sorting through a lifetime of photos, cards, beautiful English teacups, teapots, artwork….my mother was German/British, and I don’t want to get rid of anything.
But, I must, and it hurts, deep into my soul.
I’ll get there eventually.
I know that need to keep those precious items and having to let them go.

From George:
They're all turning 60 within the next year and they're going to take a trip to Hawaii!

From George:
So, my sister thought that they all could have enchiladas for lunch, which is why I went to the store.
Of course you did ;)

I much prefer taking a pill every morning to prevent reflux than taking something after I get sick.

Eggnog bread pudding with spiced rum caramel sauce.
That sounds yummy.
-
I wonder though if it is too rich.
-
In my scuffling NYC days, the pay-by-weight buffet lunch bodega by my office would put out a whole cold salmon. It was the best bargain to just take like a good hunk of it instead of a bunch of heavy potatoes or chicken or whatever.
-
I have had custard bread pudding that was delicious, and also made an incredible french toast.

Not that I’m proud of that.

I preferred small curd cottage cheese.
-
With canned fruit, peaches and pears.
-
As a kid in Indiana, we had AC, but using it at night was something my parents frowned upon. On nights that didn’t cool down, you’d wake up feeling as if you’d been suffocated with a pillow.
-
I also liked the containers that had little pieces of pineapple mixed in it.
-
Bruce, what brand of peanuts do you like?
-
I like Virginia peanuts, never Planters anymore.
-
I have thought of getting a window unit for the inevitable “heat domes” a-comin’.
-
I would eat cottage cheese and Life Savers again before I’d have a circus peanut. Those were a candy only my dad ate.
-
On summer nights growing up in suburban Connecticut we had an attic fan. It would pull the cooler night air in from outside through the windows and vent it through the roof. It made existing without A/C tolerable. But only at night.
-
I also had the bright idea of adding fruity Life Savers to cottage cheese. It did not catch on.
One wonders why.

-
Okay, I admit it. I had to look up "circus peanuts". Because I do love peanuts. Well, it's a bloody good thing I did.
YUCK! :)

I always hear about how A/C in the Pacific Northwest is not a very common thing in people's homes.

In this part of the Pac Northwest, 90s/100s has been a rarity until recently, and the hot months a pretty brief portion of the year. That all is likely changing. Haven’t really needed AC so far this year. We’ll see what August brings.
-
I also had the bright idea of adding fruity Life Savers to cottage cheese. It did not catch on.
My mom used to serve it as a side to a meal. There would be an iceberg lettuce leaf, a half pear, a scoop of cottage cheese and a cherry on top. It's how they served it in the cafeterias.
When I finished mine, all the cottage cheese remained on the plate, some of it stained red by the cherry.
-
I'm up, I'm up - maybe four, maybe five hours of non-consecutive sleep, all thanks to that rancid Big Mac. Never again. EVER. Would not digest, felt like it was all gonna come up (it didn't), and therefore mostly up - watched a Merv Griffen Show with Jack Benny from 1971.

I think I liked cottage okay as a kid, and btw it seems like it was more of a "thing" way back then. I might be wrong about that, but I basically didn't have any after I'd left home -- until years later, when I had it a number of times at...
(wait for it)...
Wendy's.
Remember when they had the salad bar? For me this was in the late 1980s, in the Chicago area, then in L.A., and finally here in Danbury before they got rid of the salad bars altogether. It's hard to believe, even for me, but I sometimes went to Wendy's specifically FOR the salad bar and didn't even go near a sandwich. (I'm looking down at my waistline right now, thinking how long ago that was. Oh lordy.) Anyhoo, I took pleasure in eating the cottage cheese there, along with the fruits and veggies, and I most definitely enjoyed it with pineapple chunks.
-
I just spent ninety solid minutes futzing and finessing three pages I'd already futzed and finessed, but I think I finally got them right. Interestingly, it's a sequence that takes place in a setting that I've never written before, so it was a lot of trial and error. Now ordering a salad, and then I'll continue futzing and finessing.
-

Probably because it was pretty that way.

Sunday evening greetings! I have spent the entire afternoon weeding another bookcase. It’s a small one, but full of sentimental stuff. Progress has been made, but I’ve also taken some side trips down memory lane.

I have calculated that Richard and I will each have 23 feet of shelf space in the study and another 7 each in the bedroom. Those estimates are low, because we’ll each have some desk-adjacent shelving.

One of our favorite side dishes is cottage cheese and cold pickled beets.
-
While I don't buy cartons of cottage cheese I do enjoy small amounts at breakfast buffets when we travel.

Hi from Bright Star tech. Trifle was a hit! About ready to run the show!

We traveled to Ft. Wayne to see their Civic Theatre's production of Something Rotten, which made us all laugh.
It was very well cast and very well sung.
They did use tracks instead of a orchestra.

Now I need to lie down and rest.

DR JOHN G this version of FROM/ETERNITY is 840 pp.
I also have another copy.....it must be some ancient Book Club bargain that I got at a used shop. All in red thin binding ETERNITY, NAKED/DEAD, and CAINE MUTINY. That version is 787 pages.

The century is young, DR Jrand72.

Eggnog bread pudding with spiced rum caramel sauce.

The Hamburger Hamlet had a "low" calorie plate of a thin hamburger patty and cottage cheese. I sometimes order that to save room for my chocolate cake/and or chocolate milkshake.

Also a cantaloupe filled with cottage cheese was always a good time at a diner.
I used to like that, but during the day vs dinner.

I haven't had any cantaloupe this season :(

We had a nice brunch with friends today.

It was a slightly belated birthday celebration.

The birthday friend selected the location and we all want to return there.

Keith and I had an incredibly delicious tofu hash (not sure why it was called hash).
-
It was the best one I've ever had.

One major problem though, the serving was shockingly small.
-
Trifle was a hit! About ready to run the show!
Ah, so that's your strategy. Feed the crew sugar, and the run-through will go at double speed.
-
I would like to try that tofu dish, DR Jane.
-
The dreaded SEVEN.
-
I do not care for page seven.
-
But I did enjoy a Cobb salad from Stanley's.
-
Four solid hours of futzing and finessing, adding detail, smoothing out the writing, moving thins around, deleting, and adding stuff. I finally wrote three new pages. Whew! I'll take a movie break, then try to write seven more by the end of the evening. If I do that, I'll be passing page two hundred of this manuscript and I'll pass 40,000 word. No, this ain't no novella.

I call this one "Labradors at the Museum."

This isn't your mother's novella.

The gravy comes out of the cow's mouth, so it's like it is vomiting on the ground.

You would need to order two-lol If we go back I will look for a side dish to go with it.

DR Iris, it's always good to see you, but it's always so late when you show up!

Yes, my sleep schedule has been highly erratic as of late.
I hope you and the Three Little Kittens are staying cool and comfortable.

The dog on the left is Willow, who we had for about a year and a half.
-
We had to give her up about 7 years ago when the house we were renting was sold out from under us without any notice and the DH lost his job, all within the same terrible week.
-
Thankfully, we have moved on and are in a much better place now.
-
We will probably get a dog again once we are both fully retired.
-
But that is quite a few years off.
-
The subject of cottage cheese brings back many memories of my youth.
Always had cottage cheese in the refrigerator.
And very beautiful multi-hued jello molds, some layers clear with pineapple or bananas.
Some layers made with sour cream with chopped walnuts.
-
My mom layered the jello in a huge brandy snifter, then leaned it on its side to chill in the refrigerator.
They were quite artistic, with each layer slanted.
-
That's neat, DR DR Iris.
-
And sounds like it would have required a lot of patience.
-
Singdaw, that’s a lovely photo of Willow.
She looks like she had a sweet personality.
-
Yes, singdaw, it took patience and effort.
But dinner guests really loved them.
No iPhones at the time, or there would have been photos.
-
I'm sure!
-
It's fun when you can combine food with art.
-
One more.

EIGHT!

It's early, but I am really tired.

I think I'm going to head off and read for a little bit.

Good night and take care, DR DR Iris.

Good night, friends.

Also a cantaloupe filled with cottage cheese was always a good time at a diner.
We often had that for lunch at home during the hot summer momths..
Maryland has wonderful cantaloupe from roadside stands, incredibly sweet when ripe.

DR Jane, was this a corn on the cob night?
Now is the season for Maryland Silver Queen corn.

Delicious when grilled in their husks on the barbecue.

DR Iris, sending vibes of comfort to you.
Thank you, Jane.❤️

My mom layered the jello in a huge brandy snifter, then leaned it on its side to chill in the refrigerator.
They were quite artistic, with each layer slanted.
My mom must’ve read the same Jello magazine article!
-
I loved when mom made the giant snifter of slanted rainbow Jello.
-
Mrs Rodzinski made a delicious salad today using the fresh-caught local salmon we were gifted, plus lettuce, scallions, feta, fresh corn, a little maple syrup, olive oil… so nice we had it twice.
-
I’ve decided I’m going to make a rainbow Jello soon. I don’t have a giant snifter though.
-
Seven pages so far, but really maybe eight with all the additions I made earlier. two more pages to page 200 and I think that starts a new chapter. I'll definitely do those tonight and maybe a couple more beyond that.
-
The gravy comes out of the cow's mouth, so it's like it is vomiting on the ground.
Now that’s appetizing!

Someone posted this on a theater chat board today.
I would have guessed “flop” before “miss”. 😄
“You know you are TOO involved in the theater when . . .
The first clue in the NY Times mini-crossword puzzle is a four letter word for "Hit's opposite" . . . and your first guess is "flop." :)
I love it. Flopsical also works

Made a modified Greek potato salad tonight. I didn’t have kalamata olives, so I used celery.
-
5.5 hours of dance lessons today. I’m tired.
-
I started the first of Joseph Hansen’s mysteries. Really enjoying it so far.
-
The narrator’s observations are excellent. He sketches a character in just a few well-chosen words that really conjure a wealth of images. And everyone smokes. Definitely of its time in the early’70s.

Feeling lazy.

But not too lazy to get us off this page.

Hello, 1 guest!

Well, it was the TIMES...of course "flop" should have been the answer. Anywhere else it would automatically be "miss".

Home from tech. I spent most of the day futzing with my MainStage programming as they did a cue to cue. After dinner we ran the show and it was pretty decent for Sunday of tech day. The band is back in tomorrow. Looking forward to a fun tech week and a smooth opening on Friday.
In the meantime, I'm home with the boys and leftover trifle - which will stay in the fridge until at least tomorrow. I think I have a bagel around here somewhere....
-
Good night, all.
-
A gravy boat in the form of a cow. What will they think of next?
I own one of these…I use it for milk
-
Or I did
-
Before the vomiting comment
-
I am now rethinking that choice
-
But it’s late so I must rethink it in my dreams

Goodnight

Oh George?

No George.

My darling Kim Criswell has had a death in the family: her dear cat Vladimir Otto died yesterday. She posted May we meet again when I go over the rainbow bridge—it surely can’t be heaven for me if he’s not there. I know exactly how she feels.
Oh, no. My condolences to Kim. :(
-
No George.

That was an interesting vintage video compilation that you posted last night, DR George.
I know, right?

Sleeping temperatures began their return last night, though it was very early morning before my room was feeling the difference.
I daresay (oh yes, I do) we won't have to run any air conditioners this week. And isn't that lovely.
I don’t know what it means to not run the AC.
Even though it's not that warm here, I constantly run my air conditioner in my car the moment that I get it.
-
It never really gets very cold, so I have to keep it on all the time to get any kind of relief from the heat. :P

So sweet!

DR George: You have never read any of the Maupin "Tales of the City" books, as you said, but did you ever see any of the TV adaptations of the stories?
I only saw a couple...not the whole series. ::)

Certainly a good enough excuse for me! ;D

From George:
They're all turning 60 within the next year and they're going to take a trip to Hawaii!
That sounds like fun.
They're all looking forward to it.

I much prefer taking a pill every morning to prevent reflux than taking something after I get sick.
I would too. Fortunately, I don't have any kind of reflux situation, so usually Tums is good enough for me.
-
Eggnog bread pudding with spiced rum caramel sauce.
That sounds yummy.
I wonder though if it is too rich.
Bite your tongue!
-
One thing I have not returned to is adding ketchup to cottage cheese, which my siblings and I did as kids. Yuck.
When I was a kid, I didn't like spaghetti sauce, so I would have spaghetti with ketchup.
-
One time (to this day I have no idea why), I mixed ketchup into a big plate of mashed potatoes. I threw up all over the kitchen! :o
-
After that, I didn't eat mashed potatoes again for literally YEARS!!

I always hear about how A/C in the Pacific Northwest is not a very common thing in people's homes.
And then I hear about the 90s and 100s and worse air quality than other areas, etc. etc. ..... so, um ..... ? :)
They are becoming more popular. My mom has a floor model that vents out a window, and my friend Margo has an in-the-window model.

In this part of the Pac Northwest, 90s/100s has been a rarity until recently, and the hot months a pretty brief portion of the year. That all is likely changing. Haven’t really needed AC so far this year. We’ll see what August brings.
It's global warming! It's Climate Change!! IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD!!!

PAGE TEN DANCE!!
-
I'm up, I'm up - maybe four, maybe five hours of non-consecutive sleep, all thanks to that rancid Big Mac. Never again. EVER. Would not digest, felt like it was all gonna come up (it didn't), and therefore mostly up - watched a Merv Griffen Show with Jack Benny from 1971.
That's too bad about the Big Mac, BK. The last couple that I've had were pretty good. :-\

Nice! ;D

Cottage cheese is in lime congealed salad, which I have to make regularly for my dance instructor. It’s pretty good: lime gelatin, cottage cheese, pecans, canned pineapple, heavy cream.
Evidently, the definition of "good" can be interpreted in a variety of ways. ::)
;)

It may just be that McDonald's but I have to be done with it for a while.
-
New notes are up.
-
Up are new notes.
-
I've seen them.
-
I've read them.
-
I wrote them.
-
Four solid hours of futzing and finessing, adding detail, smoothing out the writing, moving thins around, deleting, and adding stuff. I finally wrote three new pages. Whew! I'll take a movie break, then try to write seven more by the end of the evening. If I do that, I'll be passing page two hundred of this manuscript and I'll pass 40,000 word. No, this ain't no novella.
Can't wait to read it!
-
I've done eleven pages. I began a new chapter, wrote a couple of pages, then decided those couple of pages would be a better ending to the chapter, so I moved them and wrote a short additional paragraph to end the chapter and that seemed to work pretty well, but I'll see how I feel when I futz and finesse. I can always go back to the way it was.

The dog on the left is Willow, who we had for about a year and a half.

Sweet!

We had to give her up about 7 years ago when the house we were renting was sold out from under us without any notice and the DH lost his job, all within the same terrible week.
Oh, no. :(
-
Thankfully, we have moved on and are in a much better place now.
Very good news!
