Title: THOSE THRILLING DAYS OF YESTERYEAR
Post by: bk on August 07, 2023, 12:10:49 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes returned to those thrilling days of yesteryear, and now it is time for you to post until the returning to yesteryear cows come home.

So, last week I received in the mail a vinyl album soundtrack reissue that I had actually ordered.  I got it for two reasons:  1, Rupert Holmes wrote or co-wrote several tracks, and 2, it's autographed by Rupert Holmes! ;D

The album is actually the soundtrack to a porno movie called, "The Flasher (https://realgonemusic.com/collections/new-releases/products/pool-pah-the-flasher-lp)." :o

Only the first 50 albums were signed, and I got one of them (the unsigned album is otherwise still available).  The autograph is on a second cover, and the album itself is still sealed.  Here's the still sealed and unsigned album:

I slept well. Annabelle, Thatch, and I watched Episodes 3 and 4 of the 1993 miniseries, Tales of the City. I really want to dig those books out of the quagmire and read them again now. I met Marcus D'Amico, who played Michael, at the Drama Book Shop when he was in the US for publicity on the series. He's so perfect as Michael, I always wondered why he did not do More Tales and Further Tales of the City. He had just done Angels in America at the National Theatre of Great Britain, and we talked about that. He was very charming and friendly.

I also knew briefly Thomas Gibson, who played the all-round pig Beauchamp. We had two close encounters, one at the Drama Book Shop and one backstage after the Shakespeare Festival's Twelfth Night. I don't think playing Beauchamp was a stretch at all. I didn't like him. Billy Campbell, who played Dr. Jon Fielding, was cast in John McGlinn's Show Boat recording, but dropped out, to be replaced by Steve Barton. I've always suspected it had to do with McGlinn's proclivity for sexual harassment.

I was really devastated by the death of Walter Charles. I adored him. In 1991, he auditioned for the Houston Grand Opera's Babes in Toyland, singing "The Olive Tree" from Kismet. It was glorious. We cast him as the villainous Uncle Barnaby, and I got to spend six weeks in Houston with him and the rest of the wonderful cast. On the night of the dress rehearsal, Walter had his first scene, skipped offstage, slipped, and broke his ankle. His replacement was a fast learner and did a fine job, but he wasn't Walter.

DR Elmore:  I think you are correct in your assessment of Thomas Gibson.  Stories from guests on the show "Dharma and Greg" were flying around that Gibson was a prima donna on that show, and he did not let anyone forget that it was HIS show, even though he was second-billed to Jenna Elfman.

He also got fired from "Criminal Minds".   Threw some sort of hissy fit and kicked a writer.  KICKED a writer!

He is a good actor, but no one needs the attitude on a set.

I thought Marcus D'Amico was a perfect "Mouse", as well.  He has, sadly, passed away.  I think his reasons for not doing the followups were that he didn't want to leave the U.K., and that he didn't want folks to think of him as only one character.  Too bad, because it's the best thing he ever did that I have seen, although I saw him in only one other show.  Not one of the succeeding "Michaels" measured up one bit.

The one person I'd like to see again, and haven't seen in about 50 years, is Eddie Brock, who I knew from 3rd grade through my college years.  We were never close friends, but he always greeted me as one, and I always felt a kinship toward him.

Would like to see my childhood pal Tad, who moved to Indianapolis after 4th grade, which, at the time, was like moving to the moon, as far as we were concerned. He went on to have a little music career and played touring bass with the Cowsills, so we did reconnect once at BB King’s in Times Square.

It's actually remarkable that it IS a dark dreary rainy morning AND a Monday, since most of that dear drear rain this summer has been on the weekends, followed by sunny, clear Mondays. So this is the way it should properly be.

There are no complete English recordings, but I do have a complete 1958 BBC radio broadcast of a Sadlers Wells Opera performance starring the great June Bronhill, dialogue and score. If you'd like it, I'm happy to send it.

There are a couple of excellent German recordings. These two are both excellent and offer the complete score.

This English recording with Reardon and Della Casa is not complete but the translation is wonderful and the recording is excellent.

When I went down to remove the laundry from the dryers, I found that one dryer for the past hour had been blowing cold air, the same one that was blowing cold air three weeks ago when I last did the laundry. So, I called the company servicing our laundry room and once again alerted them of the defective dryer. I think the dryer needs replacing, not repair. So, I had to waste another hour while the cold clothes dried. While there. I had another strange encounter with my arch-nemesis, The Man with the Bike, a complete ass.

He came down with a bag and asked if I was using both dryers. I said I was using one and the other was out of order. I said it several times because it never seemed to register with him. He kept asking why I was using both dryers, and then he walked out.

Jane, I’m in a condo on the third floor of a 5 story building.
Ceiling to floor glass in every room, surrounded by lots of trees.

It’s getting bad. Lots of hail, thunder, wind.
Trees are swaying and bending.
Hope the power stays on.

Is there an underground garage?  Do you have a hallway, or any room that doesn't have a window?  What about a central area in the condo building?

We have been warned to stay indoors.

I have no problem with that! 😊

Craig said it shouldn't be a bad where he is.  He can go to his little hallway if it doesn't get bad.  It it looks worse he can go (taking his cat with him) to a lower central area.

DD JP is home.  The cone they sent him home with is way too big, I think I have a smaller one or I'll go get him a blow-up donut.  He's not very happy - sounds frustrated not necessarily in pain.  He just doesn't seem to know where to put himself with the cone.  Other than that, we was a good patient, and now he's chipped as well.

Yeah - especially now since everything is "new".  I'll take it off when he eats, and maybe on his walks - but for now, he should wear it.  They say 10 days, but we'll see how well things heal.  He's a good patient, though.

One of Friedkin’s first breakthrough jobs was directing one of the last episodes of “Alfred Hitchcock Presents.” Hitchcock would reportedly scold the young filmmaker for not wearing a tie while on set.

Alfred Hitchcock was such a character. 😊

Friedkin beat out some serious heavyweights to win the Best Director Academy Award for The French Connection at the 1972 ceremony. Also up for the statuette that year were Stanley Kubrick (A Clockwork Orange), Peter Bogdanovich (The Last Picture Show) and Norman Jewison (Fiddler on the Roof). He would go up against more heavy hitters with The Exorcist two years later. George Roy Hill won that year for The Sting, also besting Bernardo Bertolucci (Last Tango in Paris), Ingmar Bergman (Cries & Whispers) and George Lucas (American Graffiti).

Title: Re: THOSE THRILLING DAYS OF YESTERYEAR

A “warning” means that I am eating cupcakes. Right now.

Bathtub
Yes! Bathtubs can be a very good place to hide. Usually, these are very tightly screwed to the ground. You cannot very easily pull these out of their bases. Many times, it has been seen that bathtubs are among the very few things that survive the devastation of a tornado. Get a mattress and get inside the tub and pull the mattress over your body. This will give you cover from all the sides.

I had Lamar Livingston and his brother come by and prune all my shrubbery, cutting back some massive overgrowths.

I also watched two movies this evening:

The first one was "Unbreakable", M. Night Shyamalan's follow-up to "The Sixth Sense."  Bruce Willis has never been better in any film than he is in this one, IMO.  And Spencer Treat Clark as his son was superb.  Shyamalan exacted sterling performances from his younger actors.   I particularly love this film, and Samuel L. Jackson is very effective in a strong, sympathetic, yet antagonistic, role.

I followed that up with "Signs", a favorite Shyamalan film with stunning performances, from Mel Gibson to Joaquin Phoenix and Kieran Culkin to Abigail Breslin...wonderful youthful performances making a huge impact in his films.

Both films have superb scores by James Newton Howard.

I’m not caring for Nevada Smith. Too episodic without much substance.

Weather update:

The tornado watch has expired.  A few thunderstorms are in the area, but they’re not severe.

The HHW vibes have come through once again. 😊
Many thanks.

The Night They Raided Minsky’s is a fun movie. Though Friedkin once said he had zero fun memories of making it.

I think Mr. Air has to come back, unless the tepid air that's blowing gets colder. I think what we'll need to do is have me start it up and if it's not blowing cold then he can come and I'll leave it running. If it IS blowing cold, then we'll wait until it screws up again. I'm hoping it gets colder in a few minutes but for now it's not really cooling things down. At least it's not hot air like over the weekend.

I am finally reading A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin.

Ursula K. Le Guin actually came to the Washington Center and spoke for the "Timberland Reads Together" program one year.  The place was quite full...for a TRT event.

Watching Nevada Smith. Steve McQueen, Brian Keith. (Funny that tonight’s other Western had Sebastian Cabot.)

I remember watching Family Affair when I was a kid. ;D

One actor wasn't there, so pug had to read her lines AND play her own role.
Title: Re: THOSE THRILLING DAYS OF YESTERYEAR
Post by: George on August 07, 2023, 11:42:54 PM
pug took over a role a couple of weeks ago (I think) because another actor quit. ::)
Title: Re: THOSE THRILLING DAYS OF YESTERYEAR
Post by: George on August 07, 2023, 11:44:34 PM
It's a fairly small role in only two or three scenes, and the character has to read some stuff while talking to someone over the phone, so pug can just read her script for that part.
