Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of the departing dog, and now it is time for you to post until the departing cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: BETTER.
-
Good morning, all!
-
Good morning, friends.
-
I never signed out last night.
-
Oh, well.
-
I slept rather well.
-
Yesterday, when I saw my podiatrist, I tld her about my fall. She checked my ankle and sent me off for an X-ray. Nothing was broken, but I do have a sprained ankle.
-
~~~SICK ABEYANCE VIBES~~~ for all!!!!!
-
Glad it's nothing worse, DR elmore3003.
-
This morning, I have a telephonic conversation with my co-creator of Moonshine and Mistletoe. I hope it's pleasant.
-
Good morning
Notes dogged. Barked.
Sorry about your ankle angst dear Elmore.
-
Ron P, absolutely, thanks for sharing the Edmund Gwenn story on FB!
-
John G, I have the LP soundtrack of The Dangerous Christmas of Red Riding Hood. One of those projects it’s hard to believe exists.
-
Squishy eating vibes for DR Singdaw. That’s no fun.
Good morning, all.
John G, I have the LP soundtrack of The Dangerous Christmas of Red Riding Hood. One of those projects it’s hard to believe exists.
I have that too.
We wish the world a happy Yule …
I like Vixmom’s wish.
Money to travel.
Good morning, all.
…as I return to a semblance of normal life.
-
Good morning!
From yesterday:
We definitely had Christmas albums, but my memory will be vague on what they all were. I’ll hazard a guess that most were from the Columbia Record Club. If Mitch Miller issued one, my dad would certainly have had it. Andy Williams, probably. Maybe that Firestone series? I don’t think we had anything as avant garde as Elvis, but who knows.
On a more sacred bent, I was personally enamored of Messiah and Amahl and the Night Visitors.
-
If logs sleep, I don't believe they could do it any better than I did last night.
I feel refreshed and alert. Alas, I am still NOT in the Christmas spirit.
What will it take, I wonder?
-
I have lots to do, nowhere to be, and it's only Thursday.
-
Time for some coffee and a nosh.
-
With only an exception or two, this here blog has been replete with one-liners from the git-go.
-
We had the Ormandy Messiah, but I think another recording preceded it. Later I gravitated to the Robert Shaw one on RCA. The Amahl was the early 1960s one which was the production I would have seen on TV. I never had the original one till much later.
-
I loved the Nutcracker. I started with the Ansermet recording on London which is still a favorite, a second favorite being Arthur Fiedler’s excerpted version.
-
I think it's time to trot out this annual line:
If you've seen one Christmas opera, you've seen Amahl.
-
Thursday morning greetings! We’re going over the river and through the woods today to our granddaughters’ house.
-
Watch out for the Big Bad Wolf, Ginny!
-
TOD - a quick, full-price, no-strings-attached offer on our old house that proceeds to a smooth closing early in 2024.
-
Bruce: The weather forecast for your neck of the woods looks pretty grim today. Massive amounts of rain and flooding are expected.
Stay to the high ground, please. Carry an umbrella.
-
DR slingstraw, I hope your healing is proceeding apace.
I think you should make sure there is ice cream in your freezer to get you through the long weekend.
-
I like Vixmom’s wish.
Ditto!!
-
Christmas Eve falls on Sunday this year, so there will be plenty of time spent in church, both morning, afternoon, and evening that day.
-
I think you should make sure there is ice cream in your freezer to get you through the long weekend.
Thank you, and a sound plan, indeed.
-
Doctor's orders, dontcha know.
-
I loved the Nutcracker. I started with the Ansermet recording on London which is still a favorite, a second favorite being Arthur Fiedler’s excerpted version.
Kapp Records recorded the complete Nutcracker with Robert Irving and the New York City Ballet Orchestra. That's never deen issued on CD, dammit! I had this and the complete Mercury recording with Antal Dorati and the Minneapolis Symphony, which was the first complete recording of the score.
-
If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, what does ice cream do?
-
I think you should make sure there is ice cream in your freezer to get you through the long weekend.
Thank you, and a sound plan, indeed.
And I repeat my recommendation about the mashed potatoes. You can buy those packs of instant what taste really good...and they have different flavors so you don't get too bored with them.
At any rate, that is how i have gotten through phases of eating only squishy foods.
You had a hiccup on the selling side, though, didn't you?
-
The recommendation of pie filling for singdaw sounded good!
-
Interesting, DR elmore3003.
Apple Music has the recording with David Zinman and that orchestra, but not the one with Robert Irving.
-
Ginny, sending vibes that your wish for the sale of the house happens!
DR Ron Pulliam - you know it! Mashed potatoes is my favorite food group.
I would love to travel to Europe again. Take a river cruise up the Danube.
Ride on the Orient Express from originating point to terminating point.
To sail the Greek Islands.
Revisit Turkey and see Ephesus.
Visit England and get a really solid tour of historical sites as well as doing some investigating of ancestry (English/Scottish/Irish and Welsh). Yep, I'm a hyrid. Plus a little Norwegian.
-
TOD: Another Christmas wish --- That all nations ruled by, or threated by, tyrants, demagogues and fascistic morons would WAKE UP and put them all down.
Goodbye, Sophie!
I shall have to think about the TOD.
All of the comments so far have been most excellent.
-
It is 37 degrees here and will be in the 40's later today. No rain until Saturday, they say.
-
Glad that the season has slowed down for DR CHAS SMITH so now he can stay home and count his money.
-
DR JEANNE the father in ARCHIE does not redeem himself nor make himself any more likable in the last episode.
-
What is this?
-
Oh....I can't count. ::)
-
I am liking Fellow Travelers.
Good acting by the leads and supporting players. Very good attention paid to costumes and cars and decor as to period....the 1950's and the 1980's.
And this is really the first film/tv show that really reveals the Cohn/Schine connection in any way close to reality.
-
Interesting, DR elmore3003.
Apple Music has the recording with David Zinman and that orchestra, but not the one with Robert Irving.
After playing it for 70 years, the City Ballet orchestra knows this score!
-
I'm up, I'm up - eight hours of sleep. Not ready to be going out for over two hours and no idea where I'm supposed to go.
-
The Dorati Nutcracker is fantastic and available as a two-CD set in fab Mercury stereo sound. YouTube has the Nutcracker Suites by Irving but not the complete.
-
I'm out of Claritin-D now - if they'd given me what I asked for I'd still have another five, but they didn't. I'll go now and see if I can get more.
-
Thursday!
Still?
-
It's time I went to check my mail.
I believe I'll need to stop someplace for lunch, as well.
Yesterday, I treated myself by going to Mickey D's and getting a quarter pounder. It had been a long while since I had one. I liked it.
Today...maybe fried chicken again?
-
I have been watching "The Christmas Card" on one of the Hallmark channels. It's my favorite of all their Christmas movies.
-
I really don't want to go out. And do I dare go somewhere to eat?
-
And if not, what will I be doing for two and a half hours.
-
From DR Ginny:
We are deferring to the wisdom of our realtor. I don’t like the new chandelier and sconces she put into the dining room, but she says they’re what 30-somethings like.
One would hope your realtor is more intuned to what sells. I was just curious if you felt the staging, to your taste or not, is an improvement over an empty house.
-
From Bruce:
Sophie the Dog has departed. I must say, I think by the end she really liked me - she licked/kissed my hand before she left, which she's never done and she gave me her paw. Couch is now shorn of all the sheets/towels and while I'm sure there's still a residual smell there, I couldn't find any hair because we wrapped everything so well, and there shouldn't be any on the wood floors because she never touched them. In fact, she would not get off the rug she was on to take the five steps to the door and I had to literally drag her and the rug to the door.
Sweet and funny. I hope the smell won't linger long, and that all of the hair is truly gone.
That's a lot of time to kill in the morning. Do you need to be out of the house for the whole time the cleaning person is there?
-
DR Jeanne there might be comments on Amazon under the reviews regarding the difficulty of opening the tin, along with some tips. Good luck.
Back from an omelet at Coral Cafe. First stopped at CVS for more Claritin-D. Of course, they were out of the twenty-four hour kind, and I'm afraid I let them have it because they're the ONLY CVS who never has it. I got the twelve-hour kind for now. But annoying. He said everyone buys up the twenty-four hour version. They can't buy it in multiples, just one at a time. Of course, I think we all know that people who read the notes go right over there to buy all of them. I suggested they order more.
Damn it to HELL. I've just been reminded that if I want to see Maestro in the theeder, I've got only through Saturday to get to the Bedford Playhouse for it. It's been literally impossible since it opened on the 8th, and I don't want to pass up the chance to see it there. I do believe I can just pull off making either a tomorrow afternoon or Saturday afternoon showing.
The Dorati Nutcracker is fantastic and available as a two-CD set in fab Mercury stereo sound. YouTube has the Nutcracker Suites by Irving but not the complete.
Dorati did two recordings of The Nutcracker for Mercury; the original mono recording is only on that recent "complete Dorati" set from Mercury, which also has his complete mono Sleeping Beauty. The second recording with the London Symphony was in stereo. Mercury stole the artwork from the first recording.
-
I have watched all three parts of the Lucy Worsley Agatha Christie "Mystery Queen" series on PBS.
I have enjoyed it, for the most part, although it covered details I already knew about Christie.
That said, I took great exception to a segment in part 3: Worsley discusses the novel "And Then There Were None". She then went into the controversy over the play title for the same story. That play begins "Ten Little..." but the original third word was the "N" word. Worsley goes into detail about how horrible a word it was as a reference to black people in the U.S. She then says that when the "N" word was changed, in the U.S. version, to "Indians", that was just as bad a slur toward Native Americans.
The thing is, she didn't really tell the "whole truth": The "N" word is how the British colonialists referenced the natives of India. That was the original reference for the play. When the title was changed, it was "corrected" to refer to the natives of India. Neither word referenced anything in "the colonies", although both were, or would become, offensive here.
A British program about a British author by a British historian, but they just couldn't state factual information on this matter.
Sorry.
Fellow Travelers kept up the drama until the end.
I liked the show and its interpretation of the book. Most of its success was because of the writing and the two leads.
-
A nice quiet Thursday.
-
Continued recovery vibes for MR BK.
-
That's such fascinating history, Ron! Thanks for sharing it.
I have been involved in three productions of "Ten Little Indians". One of them was with a mostly British cast (a NATO southern Europe production). Most of what I related was made clear to us by both the British director and other actors in the play, all of whom knew how the terminology was used and why. Oddy, even in the 1970s, the printed plays all bore the "N" word in the title. We adverstished as "Indians" and the figures we were provided were Indian Raj characters.
-
Any preference on which was the better recording musically, DR Elmore?
I'm partial to his mono Minneapolis recording, which I got through the Columbia Record Club around 1963. I also like his mono Sleeping Beauty, which was stunningly produced in a spectacular packaging.
This damn thing just won't let up. At times I feel like it's going away, then I'll have a bad coughing fit or whatever. Interestingly, that happened on the couch while watching a documentary. So, maybe dog bits are still in the air somehow. I also think the rain is part of the culprit.
Hang in there, Bruce. Give it another overnight.
That is my 2016 Christmas tree. It's the last one I did that had icicles.
I had the same tree, decordated much the same way, but minus icicles, for 2017.
Since then, I have had zero decorations on a 5-foot flocked tree and a 7-foot regular tree...each many multi-colored lights.
However, for the past two years, NO trees.
So that photo is my Christmas tree.
-
That is my story, and I'm stickin' to it.
It would be better with Vicks, but try boiling water on your stove, turn the burner off and, with a towel over your head, inhale the steam.
Don't get too close, or you may burn yourself.
Since then, I have had zero decorations on a 5-foot flocked tree and a 7-foot regular tree...each many multi-colored lights.
However, for the past two years, NO trees.
So that photo is my Christmas tree.
It is a pretty tree.
Well done DR Ron.
-
'night
-
DR Ron Pulliam - we also watched the 3-parter from Lucy Worsley on Agatha Christie. Overall, pretty good.
-
I must say, The Crown's episodes on Diana are very well done. Moving and innovative.
-
We're saving Maestro for the weekend, I think.
-
I have some ice cream left, and we'll get ingredients from the grocery store to make my mother's chocolate fudge sauce.
-
There's room for a little indulgence over the holidays, yes?
-
I saw a recipe today for a sheet pan coconut cream pie.
-
Speaking of indulgence.
-
Happy Solstice, everyone.
-
Hoping you're not feeling much mouth pain, singdaw.
-
15 hours and 9 minutes of darkness, here.
-
Thanks again, DR Freddie. On the mend, I think.
-
Sending more ~~~RECUPERATION VIBES~~~ for BK, as well.
PAGE NINE
-
Well. I guess I need remedial math.
-
Is there a Lottery drawing tonight?
-
Is there a doctor in the house?
-
Is there a chicken in every pot?
-
Is there sass in sassafras?
-
Is there an ape in apricot?
-
Is there a morning after?
-
Is there somewhere that's green?
-
Is there actually a page nine?
-
Yes. Yes, there is.
-
And none too soon.
-
For the nonce.
-
Good night, friends.
-
Holiday Indulgence is a must DR singdaw.
-
MR BK I am so sorry your symptoms seem to be hanging on.
-
Of course I don't use anything but the anti- whatevers that I get at the Dollar (25) Tree....which work fine.....perhaps my system is not as sophisticated as your own.
-
Watching an NBA game that is most entertaining.
-
I may drive the Smart Car to WalMart in the early morning to get a thing or two and then to get some gasoline so that I can have a Mid Western price repor.
-
We shall see.
-
Other than that - I have nothing to repor.
-
I like the Nutcracker. I am enjoying the posts about the various recordings.
-
U.S. Figure Skating Championships Jan 22-28.
-
I like the Nutcracker. I am enjoying the posts about the various recordings.
Me, too.
-
....perhaps my system is not as sophisticated as your own.
But can you feel the pea under the mattress?
-
I taped the Dick Van Dyke birthday tribute tonight to watch later.
-
I just happened to see the TCM REMEMBERS for 2023 and was surprised about the many folks I had forgotten who were lost this year.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-OggxFtRLE
-
Searching for a Patty Duke made-for-TV movie from 1990 called Always Remember I Love You.
-
Watching Sun Valley Serenade on YouTube. The commercials are irritating.
-
Pepperidge Farm remembers, too.
-
Or so the ads used to say.
-
Fission Chips. Ha!
Funny, DR Singdaw!
What is Marie Curie’s favorite holiday movie?
-
It’s A Wonderful Half-Life
That leaves me in tears each time I see it. So many people, so much talent, so much of my life watcching them...
-
DR Singdaw, are you on a pain pill of any kind?
Your countdown happened a bit prematurely on page 8...just sayin'.
-
Only five more posts until Page 10, as it happens.
-
There’s a new movie out about Marie Curie.
It’s receiving glowing reviews.
-
I think I will make a Sam's Club run tomorrow morning.
There are just a few things I need, and they should not wait beyond tomorrow to be found.
-
Bert I. Gordon died? I'm sure I knew that, right?
-
I hope I find some ice cream I'll like.
-
One can always use ice cream!
-
BK,I see 24-hour Claritin available on Amazon and Target, if that helps.
He should be able to get same-day delivery from Amazon since he's in a west coast mecca.
-
Unless they don't allow you to order drugs for delivery.
-
Amazon can’t deliver it until after Christmas.
But Target says it’s available in their store, at least near me.
-
I blame Jose.
-
It’s A Wonderful Half-Life
Great.
-
I blame Jose.
True.
-
It’s A Wonderful Half-Life
;D
-
DR Singdaw, are you on a pain pill of any kind?
I was prescribed some, but never had to take anything beyond Advil/Tylenol.
-
Your countdown happened a bit prematurely on page 8...just sayin'.
Yes, Hence, my comment about remedial math.
-
Good to see you, DR DR Iris.
-
Good night, friends.
-
Starting A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong on YouTube.
-
Amazon can’t deliver it until after Christmas.
But Target says it’s available in their store, at least near me.
I was thinking about Amazon Market, which makes same-day deliveries.
-
Last night we watched an enjoyable Christmas movie, This Is Christmas.
The kids and I watched an old fave of mine called Santa and the Three Bears.
Sweet. I missed that movie.
Just an old animated TV special, available on the Tube of You.
-
Did Ron P actually do a countdown to advance us by a page? Now THAT’s news!
-
BK, pretty sure you wrote a nice tribute to Bert Gordon at some point.
Sorry if this has already been posted.
I’ve missed a few days, or weeks, or….😊
John “Dukes of Dumb” Schneider the latest to unmask himself as an insane buffoon, endorsing the public hanging of the president and his son. But no he’s saying we all misunderstood. I hope he is rendered unemployable.
-
vixmom - Does that include time travel to see shows from the past?
Absolutely!
-
Like BK I had a wee cold I thought I was beating but now it’s fighting back with a relentless nasal drip if I sit or stand.
-
I do recommend an air purifier for BK to help clear out all the doggy dander.
-
Well, finally.
$2.95
Now, please keep going in that direction.
$2.87 today at BJ’s!
-
Back from church. We distributed 132 meals today, but the line was so long that we gave out dozens more. Thankfully we had food.
God bless you!
DeBlasio has to be sitting there laughing. “They thought I was bad?”
Listening to a cast of thousands read Surely You Can’t Be Serious: The True Story of Airplane!
It’s hilarious. Makes me want to see the movie again.
That sounds like fun
-
Good night, all.
-
11!
The Amazon and other stores Claritin is the shelf kind. Claritin-D you have to buy in person, show a driver's license, and sign something. And then you can't buy it again for two weeks. It's completely annoying and I'm stuck with these twelve-hour things.
-
Finished with my viewing - nice to be able to view stuff again - three documentaries.
-
Wow! Gratuitous Post #303!! ;D
-
Happy Holidays!
(http://www.haineshisway.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7452.0;attach=20097)
That's funny! :D
-
This damn thing just won't let up. At times I feel like it's going away, then I'll have a bad coughing fit or whatever. Interestingly, that happened on the couch while watching a documentary. So, maybe dog bits are still in the air somehow. I also think the rain is part of the culprit.
That was really good. I agree with the comments that say the Oscars should hire whoever does TCM's in memoriam.
