Well, you've read the notes, the notes said the best is yet to come, and now it is time for you to post until the best cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: SANGFROID!
-
Freud had sangfroid, or some I'm told.
-
And now - Dino at the piano.

Here is the entire show.
I have mixed thoughts.
-
I can’t help hearing Bernadette Peters as the lead.
-
Of course, she did do the original reading with Nathan Lane.
I hear bits of almost every Sondheim score in HERE WE ARE.
The last first time.
-
I should not be awake at this hour.
Good night and good morning, HHW!

Speaking of Sondheim, here is an excerpt from today’s New York Times.
Stephen Sondheim, the great musical theater composer and lyricist, was widely acclaimed as a genius, but during his lifetime he had a bumpy track record at the box office, with many of his shows losing money.
In death, however, his shows have flourished.
A revival of “Merrily We Roll Along” — which was so unpopular when it debuted in 1981 that it closed 12 days after opening — is now the hottest ticket on Broadway. A lavish revival of “Sweeney Todd” that opened in March is already profitable, and at a time when almost everything new on Broadway is failing.
Meanwhile, Sondheim’s unfinished and existentialist final work, “Here We Are,” is now the longest-running show in the brief history of the Shed, a performing arts center in Hudson Yards on Manhattan’s West Side, where luminaries like Steven Spielberg and Lin-Manuel Miranda signed up as producers to make sure no expense was spared on the Sondheim send-off.
“There just seems to be an unbounded appetite for him,” said Alex Poots, the artistic director of the Shed.

Isn’t it rich?

Thank you, DR DR Iris (and DR George) for the Sondheim links. Fascinating.
-
Good morning, friends.
-
It's Wednesday.

Instead of playing hard to get, play hard to eat.

-
Good morning, all!
-
Ir's been quite a morning, so far. As soon as I sat dwn at the computer with my bowl of oatmeal, Annabelle leaped onto the table, knocking the bowl of oatmeal all over the keyboard and table top.
-
I was not amused.
-
I have to get up and move today: garbage and recyclables to the basement, pick up the mail . . .
-
I don't usually do breakfast on a workday but I know I shan't get lunch today so..
-
Fried up some leftover mashed in butter until hot bubbling ( and squeaking 😄) then made a little nest and dropped in an egg .
Sprinkled with a little Sunny Paris, then covered until the egg was cooked to perfection.

Good morning, all.

Since yesterday afternoon I have been fighting off a slightly scratchy throat. (Nathan is down with something, but he tested negative.) I believe I’m winning the battle, but I really don’t dare lose it because too much is at stake - with an upcoming concert and of course the cataract surgeries…for which my pre-op checkup is in five hours! So I have to get through today without an actual cold taking hold of me, then I’ll feel pretty confident that I have prevailed.
(I’ve learned that I must always watch myself carefully in December. It’s when I tend to be my most vulnerable when it comes to heavy schedule, changing weather, and general stress.)
-
Stay healthy vibes for the entire lot of us!
-
Big doings this morning here at HHW.
-
Stay healthy vibes for the entire lot of us!
Indeed, but especially so for you, DR ChasSmith!
-
We don't want no postponin' of surgery.

Qu'est-ce que c'est "Sunny Paris"?
-
It's another gray day here in Johnston SC. It's the fourth consecutive day like this. I have to say it's a bit miserable.
-
Isn’t it rich?
😊
It is, indeed, DR Iris.
The rest of us can now sit back and smile.
-
Drive them wild by dressing like a pomegranate.
You first!

I feel a bit sorry for Alex Poots, artistic director of the Shed.
According to the internet, "The origin and meaning of the word "poot" is unclear. It is a German surname that comes from the Middle Low German word "pot," meaning "a pot". It is also a Dutch and Flemish nickname from Middle Dutch "pote," meaning "leg paw foot claw". The word "pôte" in Middle Dutch means "limb, claw". It is also a Mayan name from a term denoting a kind of spider."
Yet the slang definition is something quite different: "A fart, perhaps a relatively quiet one."
Yes, it's a bit childish to bring it up, but imagine the torment that must have accompanied the childhood of anyone bearing that name...at least here in the U.S.
-
It was hard enough growing up being named "Pulliam". It isn't an easy name for people to pronounce, and I hear "Pullum", "Pullman", "Pull...??" all the time.
I pronounce it correctlly for those folks and tell them it's just like "William"...only you "Pull" instead of "Will".
As a kid, I was called "Pullet" by some kids. I didn't mind, but it was always puzzling why they couldn't just call me "Ron".
-
My morning muffin is finished. My coffee cup is half empty.
What to do with today? I wonder....

I looked it up. Wow! Penzey has quite the history as a left-wing radical. Gosh!
I'll have to order some!!
-
Their marketing emails are a hoot and a taunt to the far right.
-
Good morning, all.
-
I love Penzey’s.
-
Iris, thank you for the link. My friend Carol had the same comments you did. Still, I loved Rachael Bay Jones.
-
I also loved the visual production, which you don’t get here

I detect an enlarged heart..with funny looking lumps.

I will have to finish listening later. I remember hearing echoes of The Enclave as well as other scores. So grateful to BK for giving us that.
-
And not sorry grateful neither, to double that negative.

Stay healthy vibes for the entire lot of us!
Amen and ditto!

I would not have been either.
-
Why are we still on this page?
-
Move on!

A Sondheim reference
-
Three!
-
Off to start the day.
-
I watched "The Prince and the Pauper" (Warner Brothers, 1937) on a streaming service (I forget which one) yesterday.
It was a lot of fun, and Errol Flynn was just as dashing as ever, and the Mauch twins, Billy and Bobby, were also fun. Great cast of supporting characters, a massive production for its era. And it had the extra majesty of an Erich Wolgang Korngold score for that extra OOMPH.
It is due out next month on a Warner Archives Blu-ray disc. The streaming version was mighty fine, so it may have been that Blu-ray master that was used.
-
Off to start the day.
Well, if you must, you must....
-
Who is the one guest shadowing our proceedings this morning?
Would it not be just as easy to join us?
-
So many wonderful links in the posts today!
-
I watched SALTBURN last night.
Yes....well.....I liked it since I like that sort of thing. No real surprises but a few nice reveals......
I may watch it again.
-
And not sorry grateful neither, to double that negative.
Me, too, neither!
-
Stay healthy vibes to Chas!
-
Thank you, Iris, for those links!
-
Also thank you to George, for the links!
-
vixmom - Why will you not be having lunch today?
-
Who is the one guest shadowing our proceedings this morning?
Would it not be just as easy to join us?
At one point last week, there were 88 guests!
-
I wonder if they're people who were just reading the notes.
-
I remember a time about 20 years ago when I was aware of the notes and read those regularly.
-
Especially for the trivia contest that was in the notes every week.
-
And right now, there are 112 guests viewing the board.
-
Ron, I'd been pronouncing your name incorrectly (as if it had three syllables), and I'm glad you clarified it.
-
The trip to the basement was less painful than I estimated. I also discovered today that I can order NY State lottery tickets from my corner bodega, so I've got my tickets for tonight's Powerball.

I remember Jack Lemmon saying the studio wanted to change his name and he refused, said that if he could survive growing up with the name Jack U Lemmon he would keep Jack Lemmon ;D

Oh, no. :(

Busy morning is over. I went to the bank. I went to the post office. I paid some bills while I was there. I had several packages awaiting me. I came home and opened my mail and packages, and then I began activating "new" credit cards and/or gift cards online.
All is done. I have let mail build up for a long time and have quite a bunch to go through. Virtually all of it is asking for donations to charities or police funds or veterans groups or elderly or Jewish poor or native Americans, etc. I would love to help them all, but I have to restrict myself.
My charities of choice are Toys for Tots and Wounded Veterans.
I sometimes donate to local law enforcement.
The trouble is that these folks apparently share or sell my information to others and I become besieged with requests for donations.
This brings me to the political party of my choice: I donate to the party, and the party seemingly gives out my information to every candidate in every state who then besiege me with requests for their campaigns.
Sheesh! Am getting very tired of it all.
Charity begins at home, as my local encapsulation expenses and gutter repair demonstrated to me.

Good Morning and Happy Holidays! Everything is done, I'm happy to say, until the middle of January. It's nice to relax for a while. Everything was great, school program, church music, White Christmas family get together - everything was great. The boys are at the spa today. so Papa has some alone time. I guess there is stuff to do, but I'm not in a hurry! NIce to be back,

When I was going to Western Washington University, the head of the music department's last name was Pulliam. I forget his first name now, but I do remember (easily) that he was from England.
My ancestors came from England, and my ancestry on both sides is English, Welsh, Scot and Irish, with just a tad bit of Norwegian thrown in.
Pulliam, etymologically, is a Welsh variation of "son of William". Where the "Pull" came from is anyone's guess.
-
I haven't done nearly enough tracing my ancestry, but a favorite aunt on my father's side traced the migration of some Pulliam brothers from England to Virginia.
One of them, allegedly, was hanged for stealing a horse. She said she decided to stop there unless more woeful facts were uncovered.

I am now the proud owner of a barely used iMAC Pro. Not sure of the model number, but it is set up and on the inner web.
The wireless keyboard and mouse don't seem to want to connect - but my sister-in-law didn't like them and used USB mouse and keyboard.
I may investigate this further.

Congrats, Jrand!

Thank you for that link, DR John G.

DR Jrand73, congrats! A new iMac Pro, especially at a good price, is something to treasure. Even if you don't end up loving it. I know nothing about the full size Macs, only the laptops, but I envy your good fortune.
As for the keyboard and mouse, are they bluetooth? Make sure both are charged, and that you have bluetooth turned on on the Mac.

Congrats to DR Matthew on successful completions of White Christmas and the other musical events.

You may need to charge the keyboard and mouse, JRand. There are also little switches on them to turn them on. Just a couple things to check that you probably already have checked.

Well, this is not to my liking. Not at all.
Dear Prime member,
We are writing to you today about an upcoming change to your Prime Video experience. Starting January 29, Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements. This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership. We will also offer a new ad-free option for an additional $2.99 per month* that you can sign up for here.
-
Good afternoon.
Hello DR Laura.

JRand, congrats on your new iMac Pro!

Will be back later.

Here’s a chance to hear some of Larry’s work: https://playbill.com/article/video-watch-the-encores-orchestra-rehearse-shy-for-new-york-city-centers-once-upon-a-mattress
Sadly, no. "Shy" was one of Joshie's.
Sorry. Still, it was nice to hear the song.
And Joshie's work is wonderful!
-
David Staller is a lovely person.
Yes, he is. Annabelle and Stella were all over him. We had a lovely visit.
-
Here’s a sneak peek at The Kennedy Center Honors, airing tonight at 9PM East Coast Time on CBS.

Thanks for the link, Iris.

Just discovering what the library has to offer in terms of movies/shows to stream. Now watching a silent Hitchcock called Blackmail. The print is excellent.
-
They have about 20 Herzog movies, some Jacques Rivette, Jean Renoir, Claude Chabrol, plus a lot of stuff on Criterion, which will save me some money in the future.
-
They also have The Man Who Invented Christmas, which has been discussed here recently.
-
Seven!
-
Welcome, 0 guests!
-
Blackmail is actually a silent movie with dialogue added or dubbed into it. Interesting.
-
Welcome, 0 guests!
That's for this topic but the other page says "77 Guests are viewing this board."
-
What ARE those 77 guests viewing?
-
It’s also the first movie with a Hitchcock cameo. A kid is tormenting him and he’s never t afraid to dish it back.
-
What ARE those 77 guests viewing?
Something more interesting than my babbling

Since she didn't use the keyboard and mouse my guess is that they need to be charged....but of course that means a special lightning to USB cable.
I just ordered one.
Do I need a dongle....that little USB thing that I use with my Windows wireless mouse & keyboard....or does Bluetooth take care of that?

That sounds wonderful.
There's Jeremy! And it's always great to see Susan Jolles. A few other familiar faces.
No David Gursky this time?

Nope. Just find the little symbol in the top right menu bar to turn Bluetooth on -- unless you have a newer operating system that I'm not familiar with.
-
DR Jrand73, click on the Apple symbol at top left, select About This Mac, and tell us what OS it's on.

A murder has just occurred in Blackmail. It’s a great Hitchcock moment, except I can’t believe Cyril Ritchard would ever try to rape a woman. He’s not that good of an actor.

He was married, you know.

I'm up, I'm up - nine hours of sleep. Was up earlier after six, but went back to bed.
I slept six hours and couldn't get back to sleep.
-
Am feeling better at the moment.
This is good to hear, vibes you stay feeling better.

Not possible! And it's never babbling if it turns a page!

Starting Weird, the movie about Weird Al.
-
Sweeney Todd himself, Josh Groban, just showed up in Weird as a waiter.
-
I love David Staller.
One of my favorite albums is EASY TO REMEMBER.
His voice enchants me.
-
Here is a sample.
I think the entire album is available to download.

His godmother was Hermione Gingold. He named his theater company after her. I’ve attended several of his productions, and enjoyed them tremendously. Here’s a little bit more information.
“In 2006, Staller founded Gingold Theatrical Group, a New York based theater company that presents works based on George Bernard Shaw's humanitarian precepts. They present monthly script-in-hand performances at New York City’s Symphony Space, produce off-Broadway productions, and partner with several New York educational programs.
Staller has directed performances of all of Bernard Shaw’s 65 plays.”
-
Here’s one more. He also plays the cello on this one.
I think it’s pretty 🔥🔥

Thanks for the links and story on Staller.
-
Very interesting DR IRIS. Thanks for posting.
-
I have a Playbill from A Visit To A Small Planet that was autographed by Cyril Ritchard and the rest of the cast.
-
DR CHAS SMITH the "about" tab tells me that I am using the High Sierra 10.3.6 Operating System.
I have at 27" Retina Display....and it seems to be from 2020. So it is not the very LATEST I am sure.
And thanks for the info about the dongle. When my cord arrives sometime next week, I shall charge up my keyboard & mouse and see what happens.
-
I have set up my ProtoPage home page, email, Facebook, and Gmail pages/accounts.

I have seen two separate news stories tonight, one on the rise of covid in California, and the other on the high number of respiratory illnesses in California.
-
Bruce, vibes you are greatly improved by tomorrow.

'night
-
Weird was fun.
-
After listening to Here We Are, I have decided to start The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie. Haven’t seen it in years.
-
Iris, are you located on the East coast or the West coast, or do you travel a lot between them?
-
Bruce, vibes you are greatly improved by tomorrow.
More vibes for BK getting better!

NOW IN VISTAVISION!!!

Imagine how many Guests will show up when word gets out
-
Seems to be the usual shortness of breath as we get to the late afternoon.
-
Not quite as bad, though.
-
Jrand, you'll want to immediately update your operating system to no less than Big Sur - I think that's still two back from the current so you may want to go later than Big Sur. Absolute necessity.
-
I haven't seen all that many films this year, but of the ones I've seen, I've certainly seen my favorite just now. And not a shaky cam in sight, not an overblown moment in sight, not any "now" direction in sight, not any sops to today in sight, a lovely valentine of a movie and a throwback to the kinds of movies Hollywood used to know how to make, with actual human characters behaving as they should - no Screenwriting 101 idiocy - you care about the people, it's very funny and moving and everything a movie should be. Perhaps the best-reviewed movie of the year, currently at 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, for those who care about such things. And, of course, a complete flop at the box-office. It ought to be up for a slew of Oscars, including Best Screenplay and Director - it won't be. More in the notes, but, special shout out to anyone who can name the film before then.
-
Fried up some leftover mashed in butter until hot bubbling ( and squeaking 😄) then made a little nest and dropped in an egg .
Sprinkled with a little Sunny Paris, then covered until the egg was cooked to perfection.
Qu'est-ce que c'est "Sunny Paris"?

The Holdovers
-
Long work day, followed by a dinner out - another birthday celebration.
-
I'm back now, and caught up.
-
Not necessarily in that order.
-
Loving The Discreet Charm. And I love the changes that Ives and Sondheim made, some updating, some condensing.
-
Good night, friends.
-
Hmm.
Like you, John G., I was thinking BK’s film choice was The Holdovers.
-
It could also be :
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.
-
I’m going with :
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.
-
Freddie, I’m physically in Baltimore.
Mentally and emotionally, currently homeless.
-
Ron, I had to go to a meeting today over my lunch break , ( for personal reasons not work related)
-
After work today I went home instead of to WFO because my youngest brother and his wife are up staying with our mom for a few days
-
John G., I would like to watch The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie again.
I saw it in 1972, I think, but am interested in seeing it again because of Here We Are.
-
So my two brothersand their wives, our mom and Vixdad and I went out to dinner at the local diner.
They have this one round table in the back dining room that just fits 7 and is perfect for talking, quiet and everyone can see everyone.
-
John G., have you seen The Exterminating Angel?
-
I called this morning and asked if they would it hold it for we 7 at 7 pm and they did!
-
We had a really fun time. It was the first time we’ve all been together since the Vixter’s wedding in June of 2019
-
Then we went back to my Mom’s, and we had the chocolate mousse cake I brought to celebrate the birthday of the middle kid, who was born on Christmas
-
My first Pulliam was Keshia Knight-Pulliam.
There was basketball player at University of Kentucky named Pulliam back in the 1980s.
Keshia, however, put the name on the celebrity map. No relation, that I know of.
What is odd to me is that she is a Knight-Pulliam and Tempest is a Bledsoe. Both on Cosby. And in my life, I'm a Pulliam, my maternal aunt is a Bledsoe and her best friend/next door neighbor is a Knight.
And nobody but me made that name connection in my family.

Chocolate mouse....what will they think of next? Pomegranate O'Possum? Vanilla Venison?
-
Ron, I had to go to a meeting today over my lunch break , ( for personal reasons not work related)
I appreciate the info, but is there a punch line? Why are you telling "me" this?
-
John G., have you seen The Exterminating Angel?
Yes. And I saw Thomas Ades’s opera version.
-

Weren’t you the one who asked why I wasn’t having lunch today ?
-

I own it, but I never actually watched it. ::)
-
...yet. ;)
-
vixmom - Why will you not be having lunch today?
Oh no, it was Freddie
-
Sorry Freddie
-
We had a really fun time. It was the first time we’ve all been together since the Vixter’s wedding in June of 2019
Very nice!
-
I am beginning to fade.
-
Sounds like a nice gathering, Vixmom.
-
Good night,all.
-
Dear Reader Iris is correct: Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. I watched a pretty okay movie after that - a little sappy and not that well directed and horrible use of period rock music, which I hate, but a decent yarn well acted.
-
Here in time to help the day end.
-
And help get us to 10 pages.
-
Saw a movie in a theatre. The title is Migration.
Pretty minor kids animated feature. Some good animation.
I slept for a few minutes of it.
-
I liked Tom Smothers in the hardly released early Brian DePalma film, “Get To Know Your Rabbit.” Neither Smothers or DePalma has much good to say about the film, but it’s actually quite excellent at portraying how capitalism can co-opt and destroy anything.
Orson Welles, John Astin, Allen Garfield, and Katharine Ross are all good in it.
-

That IS wild.
-
Tommy Smothers once got punched out by Bill Cosby, so he was a guy on the correct side of things in many ways.
-
His name appears in the original lyrics of “Give Peace a Chance.”
-
And where might George be?
-
I don't see him.
-
I thought I'd see him.
-
But nooooooo, I do NOT see him.
-
And he WILL be held accountable.
-
Here we are on page ten.
-
New notes are up.
-
Up are new notes.
-
I've seen them.
-
I've read them.
-
I wrote them.
-
To da notes…!
