Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a nut for tuna, and now it is time for you to post until the nutty cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: CONGENIAL!
-
Rodzinski, I posted right when the day changed.
Sending good weather vibes and hope that your power stays on.
We’re getting snow again tonight. It is currently 11 degrees, very cold for Maryland.
-
DR singdaw, good news about your mom!

Good morning, friends.
-
.
-
BK, totally agree with your assessment of Maestro. I wanted to like it more than I did, but there are certainly some worthy things in it. I understand that it is not a comprehensive biopic. But it would have been nice if it demonstrated more his raw talent as a musician and a teacher.
-
Good morning.
-
I love almost all of his compositions, but I keep coming back especially to his Symphony 2 ("The Age of Anxiety") and the Mass ("Thank You" and "Hurry").
-
As DR Ron Pulliam pointed out on FB, Peter Schickele (PDQ Bach) has died at 88.
-
Loved his annual appearances at Carnegie Hall growing up.

Last saw him in Minnesota in 2015.

Good morning, all.
-
I hadn’t read any rave reviews of Maestro. A few had been positive. Most were negative, many for the reasons BK mentioned. All loved Carey Mulligan.
-
I like most of what people have listed so far. Favorite song may be Some Other Time from On the Town.
-
Yesterday I mentioned it was 42. That’s how bouncy our weather has been. That was a high after lows around 17. Today it’s supposed to get up to 70.
-
Why are we still on one?
-
Onward!

I’m ushering for Les Ballets Trokadero de Monte Carlo. I hear they’re sensational. It’s an all-male troupe performing all the parts in classical ballet.
-
Good morning, all!
-
I had a major panic attack late last night and it wasn't pretty. I am quite worried about things.

So sorry to hear of Peter Schickele's death. He was not only a brilliant musicologist and hysterically funny gentleman, he was very kind and generous and a brilliant composer and arranger. I used to see him often at Associated vMusic, which was run by my friend Judy Haring. He gave us tickets to the premiere of PDQ Bach's Oedipus Tex at Carnegie Hall. Dana Kruger as Madame Bo-Peep. the village seeress, sang to Oedipus:
You murdered your father and married your mother?
You rascal! You're my kind of guy.
Several years ago, I called Peter to tell hm how much I loved his opera The Abduction of Figaro, and I asked him about some of his recordings that never made it to CD, like the incidental musical for The Knight of the Burning Pestle. Not long after that, I received several homemade CDs in the mail. He will be missed
-
I think the first time I saw Peter's name as an arranger was for Buffy St. Marie's wonderful recording of Joni Mitchell's "The Circle Game," which played at the end of the movie The Strawberry Statement. He also wrote the wonderful charts for Joan Baez' Christmas album, Noël.
-
I interviewed Schickele in the early 1980s for the college paper. He was funny and humble and sweet. I, of course, wanted to talk about Oh! Calcutta! as well as P.D.Q. Bach.
-
Hugs, Elmore. Keep your spirits up, even if it’s Winnie the Pooh’s Day.
-
When is National Elmore Day?
-
Vibes for DR ELMORE.
Thanks for info about PDQ.
I love Oedipus Tex!
-
I think I will second DR GEORGE's posts for my answer to the TOD.
But all of favorites mentioned so far can also be included.
West Side Story and Candide are probably at the top for me.
-
My cousin Carol and I are going to lunch today.....we are going to try the new Xaxby's......which just opened here last month.
She said that she is familiar with them from Florida.....but they are new to Indiana.
-
A gracious good Thursday morning, you'uns!
-
I slept so blissfully well.
I don't mind saying that at all, come to think of it.
-
My cousin Carol and I are going to lunch today.....we are going to try the new Xaxby's......which just opened here last month.
She said that she is familiar with them from Florida.....but they are new to Indiana.
Is it anything like Zaxby's? They are big in these here parts. Great salads.
-
Today is cubed steak day at the Triangle Restaurant.
They really know how to cook cubed steak...and the gravy is scrumptious.
I will venture out to the post office in about an hour and then head on over to the Triangle for my Thursday luncheon repast.
-
It is currently 33 degrees and sunny in Johnston SC. Today's high should soar to about 52 degrees. Tonight is anyone's guess, but we have colder air moving in for the weekend.
-
TOD:
"Candide" is my favorite Bernstein score. Bar none. Yes, I love "West Side Story", but I prefer "Candide" in its 70s incarnation...the story is so vividly told through the songs.
"Make Our Garden Grow" is a particular favorite.
-
DR Rodzinski: A foot of snow, huh? Gosh!
I guess there are risks to living so near Canada!!
I haven't seen that much snow since the winter of 1978 when I went to Naval Training Center Great Lakes for an instructor training course. It was in late January, and Chicago and environs had gotten a "major" New year's ever1977 snowstorm. People tunneled out of their homes...you could just see the tops of people's heads as they walked along sidewalks. It was like that at Great Lakes, too. And cold. VERY cold.
-
.
Nice good-morning photo!
-
I lived in Chicagoland at the time of that blizzard. I could go into my backyard and have my whole self sink into the snow. 1977 had a bad one too.
-
I bought The Wurst of PDQ Bach as a teenager. A nice overview. “My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth” was a fave. Plus the pun-filled “Oratorio: The Seasonings.” Bide Thy Thyme, Peter.
-
Thursday morning greetings! I have a previously-scheduled routine appointment with our primary care physician this afternoon that I’m glad to be able to keep. No major concerns, but I’ll be glad to be checked out after our recent illness.

We're on page 3!
-
BK, I also watched MAESTRO last night and agree with your assessment. Had to keep looking things up on Wikipedia. Jamie Bernstein’s book FAMOUS FATHER GIRL is on reserve for me at the public library.
-
Who decides these things?
I recently learned this. The National Day Archive Committee.
-
Good afternoon, all.
-
I have accomplished three - no, make it four - things thus far today:
1. Had my one-week left eye checkup with my new best friend, the ophthalmologist/surgeon, and all is well in that department.
2. Stopped in at the supermarket for a dozen things I needed. Actually, if truth be told, it was a dozen things I *wanted*.
3. Ate a late breakfast/lunch consisting of a really thick everything bagel from Whole Foods, lightly toasted, and spread with a whole mashed avocado which in turn was heavily sprinkled with a newfangled thing we picked up: dry guacamole seasoning.
4. Not least, I managed to get Mikey the cat clipped in advance of his visit to the vampire tomorrow morning.
Whew. I'm done. Time to sit back and relax.
-
DR Rodzinski I am pleased to see that you still have power and are posting.
-
Nice remembrances of Peter Schickele here. I wish I could have known him. That's incredible about him sending you the home-brewed CDs, DR Elmore.
I pretty near wore out all the LPs of his I had.
Except, not literally. I've never worn out an LP except for a few in my pre-college years when I knew nothing about how to care for them. I might even still have the P.D.Q. Bach albums. I'll check in a little while.
-
We’re getting snow again tonight. It is currently 11 degrees, very cold for Maryland.
Last year I was ready to move to Maryland for the lovely winter weather.
-
Meals distributed. Potatoes all gone. Cases of oranges gone. Yogurt gone. We gave out 130 six-packs of that.
-
We have another winter advisory alert for the next 24 hours. Alas, we are home again today.
-
At least it is warmer at 35 degrees vs 15 degrees.
-
DR Rodzinski I am pleased to see that you still have power and are posting.
Thanks! Still functioning. More snow starting…
-
Fingers crossed we still have power. I know a few people who are on day six of no power, or have power but no internet.
-
Last time I heard Peter Schickele, he had a radio show on NPR or WNYC where he analyzed music in great detail.
-
So far in Portland, the Lion King has had to cancel about six shows. I wouldn't be surprised if they have to cancel the show for tonight.
-
Back from my appointment, where I learned I’ve lost 11 pounds since seeing her last in September. Must be the “moving diet.”
-
Congrats on the weight loss.
-
Listening to MSNBC coverage of the DOJ report on the school shootings at Uvalde. I don't know how those law enforcement buffoons can hold their heads up for the failure they caused.
-
Yes DR RON PULLIAM - I misnamed it. It is Zaxby's.
I got the Chicken Club meal......very good.
I shall return. There were only a few folks in the dining room, but they were doing landslide drive-thru business.
-
Peter Schickele's songs from "The Knight of the Burning Pestle" are on YouTube!

-
On This Day in 1943, to save on the costs of labor and equipment during war time, the U.S. banned the sale of pre-sliced bread.
-
I just booked an appointment for blood work. Today would have been the day to go if the weather had cooperated. I'm hoping Tuesday will be ok.
-
TOD - I'm not a huge fan of Leonard Bernstein, mostly because I can't wrap my head around jazz, and I find his music to have that sort of style to it. I've done West Side Story 4 times - 1 of those times, we used tracks, 2 of the times, I played the synthesizer part in the reduced orchestration, and once I conducted it. I want to say that conducting WSS was a feather in my cap. To date, I've only stick conducted 6 shows - Aspects of Love, The Secret Garden, Seussical, Anything Goes, Sunset Boulevard and West Side Story. With the exception of Seussical and Anything Goes - the rest were certainly a workout.
-
Speaking of shows, last night's rehearsal of She Loves Me was fantastic. We learned all the music for Scene 1 and blocked it as well. This is new for me, usually we learn the music, then we block/choreograph, but this seemed to work very well. I'm excited about the show, already it looks great!
-
Here is the only complete PDQ Bach opera, The Abduction of Figaro, one of the funniest operas ever written.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO-W1AESUno&t=72s
-
These are wonderful. Thank you, DR Elmore.
-
I'm up, I'm up - eight hours of sleep - weird dreams.
-
Love Schikele's score for the movie Silent Running.

And suddenly here's page 4!

George & Rodzinski, did you see this?
"A bill up for debate in Olympia calls for clocks to no longer “spring ahead” in March and for Pacific Standard Time to remain in effect year-round."
-
Thanks for that link DR ELMORE......
-
My county is under both a Winter Weather Advisory AND a Wind Chill Advisory for tonight and tomorrow.
So Friday will be a stay at home day.
-
I am all for it as I am tired of adjusting to the time changes, especially in the spring. DR Rodzinski, with your children going to school across the boarder I suppose it could be confusing for you.

It made it to 71 today. Tomorrow night it’s back in the 20s. Boomerang, baby.

Keith just called me to see an unusual sight, a Canada goose walking on water. Yup, part of the pond out back is frozen. After walking on water we watched sink and slip a bit where it was only partially frozen.

I thought I'd read a "what if" kind of article about Audra and Gypsy. Didn't realize that it was actually in the works.

Today, in honor of the TOD, I've been listening to some recordings of Bernstein's Missa Brevis, wherein he repurposed some of his incidental songs for The Lark and fitted them with texts of the Mass.

It's warming up here. The "feels like" is up to -8.
-
Now that we've finished Fargo, we're alternating between episodes of the new seasons of All Creatures Great and Small and Miss Scarlett and the Duke.
-
New episodes of Father Brown are coming soon.

And yet, page six is not coming soon.

At long last! PAGE SIX!!
-
Oh, and the cat's in the cream.
-
Good night, friends.
-
Here's another one:
That one's shameless! I love it!
-
Speaking of page six, the Audra/Gypsy nonsense was a planted bit of publicist BS there. I don't believe a word of it.
-
I futzed and finessed a LOT, wrote four new pages, had Taco Bell, watched the first twenty minutes of Nyad, and will now write some more, then finish the movie.
-
I hope it is a stunt and not a done deal.
-
Back from Les Ballets Trokadero de Monte Carlo, which was a joy throughout. I got to usher down by the pit, so I could see the facial expressions of the dancers. Hilarious. They did a mock modern dance that was like a spoof of the Harkness Ballet's Percussion for 6 Men that I watched just last week.
-
The audience ate it up.
-
I am tired.
-
I may just go to sleep.
-
Good night, all.

Sweet!

I have now caught up with today's posts.
-
Hello, G!
-
Welcome to the land of the Caught Up.
-
Hello, Rod!
-
Welcome to the land of the Caught Up.
It's nice, but it'll never truly end. ::)
-
;D
-
I do not care for page seven. No posts in over forty-five minutes. I'm starting the notes now. Get me off this damn page.
-
Well, ain't that a pickle. George never returns. Since I'm pretty sure that he wasn't off finishing his his review of Kritzer World, which I'm gonna guess is never gonna get finished - it's been two weeks or more - exactly what WAS he doing?
-
Certainly not getting us off this damn page.
-
He had over ninety minutes to do that, but noooooo, he had to stuff his face with free tacos or go down some damn rabbit hole or talk on the phone or fall asleep in a chair.
-
We're not even halfway off this damn page.
-
Not even halfway.
-
New notes are up.
-
Up are new notes.
-
I've seen them.
-
I've read them.
-
I wrote them.
-
And still we're on page seven.
-
There's no getting off this damn page.
-
Clearly.
-
Even though it says George is here.
