Well, you've read the notes, the notes did not answer the age-old question, and now it is time for you to post until the age-old cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: ESCULENT!
-
Topic of the Day: I was never an Elvis fan. ::)

Good morning, all!
-
I slept rather well. Stella never showed up, and I suspect she prefers sleeping in the bathroom sink when the apartment gets too warm. Temperatures are supposed to be in the 50s today.
-
This morning I will put away my tax work. I also need to look into a dental clinic.
-
During the pandemic, I needed a dentist, and my usual clinic has been the NYU clinic on East 24th Street. Well, between 2020 and 2022, the clinic, as well as the one at Columbia University, was closed. It was frustrating, but I had no options and I stopped worrying about the situation. Now that the clinics are open, I need to see a dentist.

DR John G, I hope things remain good for your mother.
-
DR George, I read your post about seeing a friend in person as seeing a friend in prison. That was so intriguing that I had to go back and read it again.

I don't believe I have ever seen an Elvis Presley film, only clips from them on TV.

I know nothing of Elvis, I'm afraid.

I don't suppose that there's any way to tell if BK's FB postings are driving new downloads/streams of the old albums.
-
Good morning, all.

The Elvis movies were good clean fun for my family at the drive-ins in the mid-1960s. I remember being enchanted by Blue Hawaii for the locales and all, but I’m vague on what else we saw.
-
Good morning.

This evening I have a dinner meeting with my director of Once Upon a Mattress. It’s time we started figuring out what the HELL we’re doing with it.

TOD:
My favorite Elvis song is "Follow That Dream"
-
I remember really enjoying the Elvis movie "Clambake" -
But it may be a fun memory because it was on a double feature with Doris Day and Brian Keith in "With Six You Get Eggroll" and I just really enjoyed both that afternoon.
-
In 1979, my Drama Book Shop cohort Thom Heinrichs and I went to Michael's Pub on East 55th Street to see Dorothy Collins' all-Sondheim show. I think the ticlet cost me a week's Drama Book Shop salary! A sound system recording of the show has turned up on YouTube.

The age rating for the 1964 “Mary Poppins” has been increased in the U.K. due to “discriminatory language.”
On Friday, the British Board of Film Classification upped the Disney movie’s cinema rating from U, meaning it contained “no material likely to offend or harm,” to PG for “discriminatory language.”
In a statement to Variety, a BBFC spokesperson said that the film “includes two uses of the discriminatory term ‘hottentots’. While ‘Mary Poppins’ has a historical context, the use of discriminatory language is not condemned, and ultimately exceeds our guidelines for acceptable language at U. We therefore classified the film PG for discriminatory language.”
The word is a racially insensitive term for the Khoekhoe, an indigenous group in South Africa. The BBFC further explained that the word is used in the film by Admiral Boom (Reginald Owen), including when referring to the chimney sweeps whose faces are covered in soot.
-
;)
Too true.

Love the dialogue, DR Laura.
Me too.

Years ago, I took my folks to Memphis for a visit. My mother’s only comment after seeing Elvis’s house, the plane with gold faucets, the Graceland compound, the gold and platinum records, and the hall of white jumpsuits was, “I never knew he made so many movies.”
-
Favorite Elvis songs:
Rubbernecking
Love Me Tender
Jailhouse Rock
And too many more to mention

When an Elvis movie came to the drive in we were always right there....because we knew there would be songs, girls, and fist fights!
And sometimes Racing Cars.
-
My two favorite Elvis leading ladies were Ann-Margret and Shelley Fabares.

From George:
However, even though she came to work on Monday, she didn't take her food with her. On Tuesday, I mentioned that it was still in the fridge and she said she would get it that night. She didn't! I didn't remind her again (not my job) and that bag of food stayed the fridge for more than three, count 'em, THREE weeks! :o I finally threw it out when she went on vacation.

I saw the new rating but didn't know what the discriminatory language was, only that it referenced the chimmy sweeps. Thank you for the details.

I don't remember if I mentioned this before, but I was actually born in Alabama. ::)
-
But in my defense, I was a victim of circumstance...my dad was in the army and just happened to stationed there, and so I have absolutely no familial or emotional ties to the south whatsoever!
-
And, we left the south within a couple of years of my being born, so there's that.
-
Love the dialogue, DR Laura.
Very funny! :))

TOD: Elvis isn't my thing so I don't have any favorite songs or movies of his. But I did enjoy the Elvis movie with Tom Hanks and Austin Butler. My favorite song about Elvis would be "From Galway to Graceland" by Richard Thompson.

We got the Corpus Evita production photos this weekend. Here's one that was used in the online San Francisco Chronicle review. That's my wife and me front and center. She's usually not taller than me but she sure is in those costume heels.

I liked Elvis at the start - his songs and his movies like Love Me Tender, Jailhouse Rock, King Creole, Flaming Star, and Wild in the Country (in which we got Tuesday Weld AND Millie Perkins). And I really like Viva Las Vegas.

That reminds me of an old joke about a new employee being hired because the boss thought he was just out of Yale, but he was really just out of jail.
Boss: “Where were you during those missing years on your résumé?”
Employee: “I was in Yale.”
(Boss seems impressed.)
Boss: “By the way, what’s your name again?”
Employee: “Yim Yackson.”

I also enjoyed reading about DR GEORGE's evening.....I got exhausted just thinking about it.

It is now 72 degrees....I shall go sit on the front porch for awhile when the news comes on.

Lovely. It is wet and chilly here. I hope the rain stops before I walk to the clubhouse for my book group discussion.
-
I was ok with Elvis but not a huge fan like my sister was, until Blue Hawaii. As much as I liked the movie I was bothered by the lyrics to Almost Always True.
-
I also liked his little co-star Donna Butterworth.
-
Finished I Confess. Deeply Catholic movie. I can understand why it’s not universally acclaimed, but it really is one of Hitchcock’s better movies, despite some excess Anne Baxter histrionics.

The Cahiers du Cinema writers way back when thought it was his best. I won’t go that far.

Kanopy, the library’s streaming service, now has the first half of the new French version of The Three Musketeers. I have so many other library movies to watch first.
-
I didn't know about a new film of the Musketeers, so I went to IMDB to look it up. The photos look great, the D'Artagnan very handsome and Milady de Winter quite beautiful, but the posted review sounds is if Dumas' plot wasn't enough for the screenwriters so they added more plots of their own devising. So, I went to check out the second film, and the synopsis doesn't match the second half of Dumas' wonderful novel. I'll stick with Richard Lester's two films.
-
Sizzler was having a big door dash sale so I ordered the steak and fried shrimp combo and some clam chowder. I can tell you that the steak was as tough as shoe leather and about as tasty. Fried shrimp were okay. Baked potato - can't ruin that. I'm nauseous now.
-

Thanks for sharing this. What do you think of the movies that preceded it, Rope and Under Capricorn? I have a fondness for these Transatlantic Pictures outings, both because of the family history connection and the interesting use of very long takes.
-
I hated Under Capricorn the first time I saw it. I liked it much more the second time, but it is flawed by a mediocre script.
Love Rope for the exercise it is. Plus, the best Hitchcock cameo of all.

Well, it's getting close for me to head up to Lakewood for Incorruptible's first rehearsal! ;D
-
Google Maps says that it should take 34 minutes, but I want to leave earlier than that in case there's more traffic around Joint Base Lewis McChord.
-
Rehearsal officially starts at 7:00, but I think I need to be there between 6:30 and 6:45...at least, that's the plan. :)

But, in the meantime, let's head on over to page...

Film noir seppuku is very effective. Not showing anything is more disturbing than being too graphic, IMO.

A number of people mentioned they want to read Kristen Hanah's new book The Women. I grabbed it for my July pic since it is on my list of books to read.

The Eddie Izzard Hamlet was quite enjoyable.

Afterwards my friends and I walked over to 2nd Avenue to a restaurant called Little Poland
-
I had the borscht and 2 meat pierogis, 2 potato pirogies and 1/2 of one of my friend Robyn’s potato pancakes
-
I really enjoyed Dorothy Collins's Sondheim recital.

Then Robyn and I bud goodnight to Allison…she headed to Grand Central while we headed to Penn

I saw this after I got home last night
-
Once we arrived at Penn, Robyn and I parted ways, she went to NJ Transist and I to the LIRR
-
I was able to get a nice seat in a quiet car and settled in for a hour trip home…
-
Only once we got about a half hour out we stopped and waited …and waited…and waited …

Turns out there was a car stuck on the tracks up ahead

And we couldn’t move forward

After about 90 minutes the conductor announced our train was going to head back to Penn
-
It was in the 60s here today.
-
Oh no, DR vixmom! :-X
-
A general groan went up
-
Tuesday and Wednesday, we may have some snow.
-
But then the conductor announced, “But wait, there’s more! There will be another eastbound train on track 2 ( which is usually westbound) in about 3 minutes so you can all get on that
-
And so we did

I had a power pack but my cord couldn’t help them because they had iPhones and I an android
-
But another woman on the train had an phone cord so between us we helped them to get their phones charged up
-
I finally arrived home about 2 1/2 hours later than expected , and quite exhausted
-
The movie was written by and stars Jerry Skorda and Mariette Hartley with Scordino directing. Cast also includes Bernie Kopell, Morgan Fairchild, Peter MacNicol, Tess Harper, John Rubenstein and Peter Onorati.
-
But not at all upset about the delay because everyone behaved so pleasantly
-
Well, once again, DR vixmom, you had a tale to tell.

And told it brilliantly.

Glad it all worked out in the end.

But I would have been dragging at work today, were it me.

The Spinout LP has something interesting. A cover of a Bob Dylan song called Tomorrow is a Long Time. It’s not in the movie. Great Elvis vocal. At over 5 minutes, it’s the longest song Elvis ever recorded.
