Finished the "thriller" - every "now" movie cliche in the book - the ones I already mentioned and then many more. And the music, dear Lord the music is just horrible.

Had me a little Friday night TOD last night:

THE CAREY TREATMENT, a Blake Edwards movie I was seeing for my very first time, and FLARE-UP, a Raquel Welch movie, likewise -- courtesy of a couple of Warner Archive DVDs I've had for years and never watched.

CAREY got pretty interesting as it went along, and I like it, though I didn't think the central love/sex relationship with the gal who moves in with him as soon as they meet was even a necessary element. But I enjoyed it overall and will give it another spin sometime.

FLARE-UP -- oh wait, I didn't finish it, I still have half an hour to go -- starts off looking like a psychedelic something-or-other from the swinging sixties, and it's far from being a great motion picture, but it has some generous period shots of late-1960s Las Vegas and, so far, some footage of upper La Cienega Blvd. and some PCH/beach stuff out way past Malibu (I think), and it didn't seem like they falsify any of the geography. I might be able to finish this one tonight.

This is the start of a little project I call Pulling Stuff I Haven't Seen Off the Shelf, Watching It, and Either Keeping It or Letting It Go. (Rolls right off the tongue, doesn't it?)

TOD:  Back when SNL started, I'd watch it every week all the way through, but once it became possible to record on VCR, I'd usually record it and skim through it.

These days, I pretty much never watch it live, but usually watch SNL segments that seem interesting on YouTube rather than watching full episodes.

Last night, around 7:30 or 8:00, someone knocked on my door. When Amazon makes deliveries to my apartment instead of lereaving them at the mailboxes, the driver rings my bell to alert me. So, I figured, am I expecting Amazon?

At the moment, I had Annabelle sitting on my chest and Stella lyiong at my side, so I figured I'd just wait until the morning to see what had arrived. This morning, I opened the door to find two 29-lb cartons of kitty litter staring at me. I don't know if the delivery was from UPS or Fed Ex, or if the cartons were brought up by one of the nice young men acting as the building's caretakers.

I watched Saturday Night frequently, but not regularly, in its first seasons, and I enjoyed the original cast. I stopped watching in 1979 when I moved to NYC and I had no television.

When Saturday Night Live (SNL) first aired, I was in the Navy working in Italy.

I didn't catch the show until September 1977, by which time it was truly established, popular and going gangbusters.

I was living in a Barracks at Fort Myer, in Arlington, Virgnia just across the way from the Navy Annex, also in Arlington.  I worked in the Annex.

While I eventually got an apartment, the barracks time included Saturday night SNL viewing in the "day room" where the TV was.

I really enjoyed the cast at that time:  Gilda Radner, first and foremost, but also Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Garret Morris, John Belushi, Jane Curtin and Laraine Newman.

Once in my apartment, I don't remember watching it at all.  But, over the years, I'd hear about a cast member doing a takeoff on something...like Dana Carvey's "Church lady".  I would enjoy that a lot, along with Mike Myers and Carvey doing "Wayne's World".  The biggest hoot for me was Myers' Jewish lady Linda Richman and her obsession with Barbra Streisand.  Richman always got "verklempt" and encouraged her audience to "talk amongst yourselves."  I also enjoyed Carvey and Kevin Nealon as Hans and Franz.

I would sometimes hear about a performer doing someone, like Tina Fey's "Sarah Palin", and catch a show.  All of that is on youtube now.  I couldn't name anyone who has been on SNL in the past decade or so (except for Alec Baldwin).
Title: Re: MOVIE NIGHT
Post by: Ron Pulliam on November 23, 2024, 06:30:25 AM
Oh, yes:  SNL used to do parody TV ads, and one I remember best was a takeoff on the pantyhose produce known as L'
Eggs.

"Our P'eggs fit your pegs" was the catchphrase for the product pantyhose for one-legged women.

I always liked the Sweeney Sisters (Nora Dunn and Jan Hooks). Billy Crystal and Christopher Guest would do a running sketch where they would talk about ways in which they would inflict pain on themselves: “I hate it when I do dat …” Dana Carvey’s Church Lady using the Soul Train scramble board to show us Santa was really Satan.

My favorite moment of all on SNL was when Sigourney Weaver and Christopher Durang did Das Lusitania Songspiel. Sadly I can’t find a video of that on YouTube.

Good morning.

Saturday has arrived, bright, shiny and quite chilly, but only in the 40s.

I am not sure what the day has in store for me, but I believe I will be taking a load of recyclables to the local center for such things at some point during the day.

On the "cataract front", my right eye has taken over as my "good" eye.  My vision is very good without glasses, but not for reading.  My left eye needs the glasses lens, but my right eye does not. I can close my left eye and read perfectly well, but both eyes don't blend for reading.  It will soon be different, I know, after my second surgery on Dec. 12th.

Yes, I misspoke about "all of that" being on youtube.  A LOT of it is, but my "P'Eggs" TV commercial isn't.  I remember at the time that I thought it in extremely bad taste (but funny as hell).

I probably started watching SNL a few weeks after it started.

I liked most of the cast members.

As has been written - I also usually watch the next week on YouTube....and some of the current cast members are okay...It depends on who the guest host is.

I usually have never heard of the musical guests - but there are exceptions.

TOD - Yes, I was a fan of SNL, right from the beginning.  I remember watching it on my little black & white TV in an apartment I occupied from 1975-1977.  My favorite moment was a winter episode (maybe right before Christmas) that was hosted by Candice Bergen.  The show closed with everyone skating at the Rockefeller Center rink.

When "Saturday Night Live" first aired... this is hard to believe now, but I didn't even have a TV, so I didn't witness the big start live.

I caught up with it on repeats and liked it okay, but I never watched it religiously. Later still, I caught more repeats (I believe some channel was showing it every night in the early '80s) and now I really liked it. That was still the original cast. Then, what with both moving around and being interested in various other things, I dropped the habit. From then on, I watched it only intermittently. There have been certain episodes with later casts, and certain kinds of sketches and impressions of people that I absolutely loved, but the habit was gone.

I have the box sets of the first five seasons on DVD, and just a couple of highlights ones from later on. I'm afraid I've hardly watched it at all in recent years.

I hope you are managing ok without them. Do you only have one spatula?

We rarely watched late night tv and did not see Saturday Night Live even though friends were raving about it.  Evenutually, while at friend's for the evening, we watched an episode.  Bryan was a baby and all we wanted to do was go home and go to sleep.

We watch and appreciate snippets.

For years now....if not decades.....it seems to me....an amateur....that someone in the SNL writing room says "wouldn't it be funny if......."

And writing ensues.....but there is no beginning middle or end.......all of the skits just kind of meander along and then stop....it is most disserting......

I wasn’t allowed to watch SNL when it was first on. I do have a memory where we were visiting family friends and the normal rules went out the window, so I saw the B-52s on there, and that seemed wild. Later, they’d show edited episodes in syndication, and I had a little crush on Larraine Newman, as I had liked her in American Hot Wax.

By the time I could freely watch SNL, it was pretty bad, Joe Piscopo, etc.

Then I liked the season with Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest, Martin Short, etc. It’s been off and on since then, never a show I had to see, but I’ve liked some sketches.

Watched an okay b-movie directed by John Dahl - a good director. Script was not so hot nor was the over the top performance by Steve Zahn, but his character is written so annoyingly that he probably had no chance. The co-writer? J.J. Abrams back in 2001.
Title: Re: MOVIE NIGHT
Post by: bk on November 23, 2024, 10:43:11 PM
Joy Ride is the film. Wikipedia page clearly written by an idiot fanboy, who brags that the film made "over" 36-million worldwide on a budget of 23-million, like that was a major hit. No. First off, it only made 21-million in the US - 14-million overseas. So, in the US it was a complete bomb and overseas profits were never going to help this even get near breaking even. It would have had to have made two-and-a-half times its budget to break even. Then add prints and advertising to that. Amusingly, they made two cheapo direct to video sequels, which were also bombs. Sometimes one questions the brain power of the people who make these sequels - and make them seven YEARS after the fact.
Title: Re: MOVIE NIGHT
Post by: bk on November 23, 2024, 10:46:56 PM
The ONLY reason this succeeds in the ways it does, if one overlooks the idiotic behavior of its characters, is because John Dahl is good at this kind of film. Acting from the other two leads, Paul Walker and Leelee Sobieski, is fine. The villain, who we basically only hear, was voiced by Ted Levine, the serial killer from Silence of the Lambs.
Title: Re: MOVIE NIGHT
Post by: bk on November 23, 2024, 10:48:26 PM
Apparently, there were several reshoots, including five different endings - think that could be the problem? When they green light a film that has an ending that needs five alternate endings to be shot. Think maybe someone should have done, I don't know, a rewrite?
Title: Re: MOVIE NIGHT
Post by: bk on November 23, 2024, 10:50:08 PM
Of course, the ending they finally chose was the one where the villain doesn't get what's coming to him. Oooh, surprise ending meant to be chilling, if it hadn't been done ten zillion times.
Title: Re: MOVIE NIGHT
Post by: bk on November 23, 2024, 10:50:53 PM
Despite all that, it's only ninety-three minutes and I really like Leelee Sobieski. I wondered why I haven't seen her in anything in YEARS.
Title: Re: MOVIE NIGHT
Post by: bk on November 23, 2024, 10:57:23 PM
So, she gave up acting in 2012, when she married Bruce Kimmel - oops, sorry - Adam Kimmel. She has two kids and is a painter whose had several gallery shows. The reason she gave up acting is interesting - mostly because "ninety percent of acting roles involve so much sexual stuff with other people, and I don't want to do that."  And good for her.
