For the topic of the day:
1984 LA summer Olympics, Royal Opera "Peter Grimes".
This would be the one that blew me away.
"Peter Grimes" reminds me of another for my list for the Topic of the Day...when I was going to Western Washington University, we would drive up to see the Vancouver Opera to see their final dress rehearsal for only $5 Canadian! The one year that I remember, we saw "La Boheme" (and got to see the second act twice!), a not very good production of "Don Giovanni" (the singers were good but the set was simple and very stupid), and probably the best opera production that I've ever seen: Benjamin Britten's "Turn of the Screw." It was incredible. The set was sparse but unlike "Don Giovanni," it was beautiful and very effective. The singers were fabulous. I was riveted the entire time.
