Had a fun dinner with the Staitmans. Then we decided to show the girls Poltergeist. It's now thirty-two years old - can you believe it? Of course, save for the classic clown moment, they didn't find it scary at all. They were engrossed and liked it, but no scary for them. That is because there is so much scary stuff that goes much further on TV today - that's what kids find scary. In thirty-two years THEIR kids will watch that stuff because their parents will tell them how scary it is and guess what - it won't be scary to their kids. Just like Psycho was a totally traumatizing viewing experience to everyone who saw it in 1960 - now? Kids laugh at it. In 1981 Poltergeist was a perfect blend of comedy, horror, and thrills - I was there opening night and the screams were so loud (especially in the face sequence and then the clown moment) you couldn't even hear half the movie.
