French fries are my favorite style of potato, and the best fries I have ever had in my lifetime were at a steak restaurant chain called Western Sizzlin'.

The fries were cut into VERY long strips - like 10 inches long (no innuendo, DR TCB) - and fried a golden brown, and they just filled your platter up with them. I don't know where they got that size of potato in order to make fries that long, but they are far and away the best fries I have ever eaten.

Matt!  Shame on you.

I believe the "real" answer BK was looking for was Mickey Deems and Judy Garland (that's what I put), but evidently there is some disagreement as to whether it's that Mickey.

So, then the question would have been, "Who was Judy Garland 's third gay husband?"

TCB, LOL-ing at airplane parts in the rock garden.

And speaking of questions, is anyone watching Jeopardy?  Looks like there might be a "new" Ken Jennings.  He's up to 11 days and almost 300K in winnings (although he came darned close to losing today, closer than I think Ken ever did).

And I am feeling superior because I got the Final Jeopardy answer even though two of the contestants didn't.

Just back from visiting with my friend, Tommy. He's leaving Friday to do a four-week gig at Bristol Valley Theatre, then he's back for only 3 weeks before he leaves to do the last 3 months of the FULL MONTY tour, so we hung out one last time before he leaves. We watched "The Color Purple" and ate pizza. It was a bonding experience - he cried, I cried, we ate pizza and made up song lyrics for the musical version. I'll see him when he gets back from Naples (NY), but still - I'm gonna miss him...

Tomorrow night I'm seeing ALL SHOOK UP. Thursday: LENNON. Friday: Suzanne Somers (God help me) in THE BLONDE IN THE THUNDERBIRD and Saturday afternoon: Bruce Vilanch in HAIRSPRAY. Saturday's matinee will mark my 184th visit to a theatre (Broadway, off-B'way, Carnegie Hall, the Met, Kennedy Center, etc.) since I moved to New York 3 1/2 years ago. Of those 184, 48 of those have been since January 1 of this year. And that doesn't count movies! Good grief, I spend too much time and money at the theatre!! Oh, well...it's my passion, so it's worth it, I guess. And it's all a tax write-off, so that's even better.

Here's the short, hour by hour version:

5:30am - Woke up.
6:15 - Got in the car and headed to Richmond.
8:00 - Arrived in Richmond.  Went to the post office where my final Mamma Mia! was finally waiting for me in my post office box.  Went to my storage unit, dug out two boxes.
9:00 - After a brief trip to the grocery store, I headed back up to Fairfax.
11:15 - Arrived back in Fairfax - just a little bit of traffic on the way back up.  Started gathering the things I wanted to take up to NYC this trip.
2:00 - My buddy, Curt, arrived, and we loaded up his car and head up to NYC.
5:30 - We hit the Lincoln Tunnel!  Yes, at 5:30... Curt basically drove 80mph all the way up!
6:15 - We left the tunnel - UGH!  Broken down car in the tunnel.
6:30 - Arrive at my place.  Unpacked the car and freshened up a bit.
7:00 - Took the A Train down to Times Square, then walked up to TKTS.  Picked up two tickets to Altar Boyz
8:00 - Curtain time for Altar Boyz.  I enjoyed it very much - even though the new "Matthew" still seemed to be feeling his way around a bit.  However, the new Mark was hysterical!!!
9:45 - Headed over to "therapy" - it's a "special interest establishment".  Had a very strong Tanqueray & Tonic.  Met a  a friend of Curt's there.  Chatted with a guy named David.  :)
11:00 - Headed on up back to Harlem.  Curt got back in his car, and started his drive back(!!!!).  Picked up some Chinese food at the place on the corner.  Pretty good.

...And now I'm posting...

And a very special Thank You to my buddy, Curt, for playing chauffeur today - and offering to drive me up today in the first place.  He's currently between jobs, and has the time to take some day trips on a whim, more or less.  We were just talking about my move sometime last week, and I told him about my schedule, and then offered to give me a ride up.  -And I actually had to put the money in his hand for the gas, tolls, food, etc., since he wasn't going to take it in the first place.  --And we haven't even known each other that long.  He's a good buddy, a keeper.

Jose...now that you're in the City, you need to join TDF so you can get discount tickets cheaper than what you could get a TKTS. www.tdf.org

As for potatoes...

I loves me some spuds!

The Carlyle in Arlington, VA, used to have an incredible side dish made of julienne potatoes, roasted garlic and heavy cream.  Sooooo good, and I would always to have that instead of fries or whatever side dish came with my entree.  Alas, it was a casualty of the last menu change.  -Now, they have the very Atkins-friendly mashed cauliflower.  PHOOEY!

I plan to.  -Can you pick up another ticket for All Shook Up for tomorrow night?  I'd love to join you.

DR Jason - As for hitting all of those food establishments... Well, that was sort of a conglomeration of a couple days' worth of eating and walking and eating and walking...  But I don't see anything wrong with trying to hit all those places in one day.

...While waiting in line for the bathroom after seeing Altar Boyz, I noticed this guy come into the bathroom after me who looked like one of my former students from VCU.  Well, lo and behold, it was one of my former students from VCU.  He just graduated, and is currently in a production of Anything Goes back in Richmond.  However, since they only perform Thursday night thru Sunday matinee, he decided to come up to the city for a few days.... And he just happened to be at Altar Boyz tonight too!

...And, yes, we did get a few strange looks as we were hugging in the bathroom.

:( I wish I could, Jose! I'm going with a couple of friends who already have tickets. I just checked TDF and it's not on right now, but it's usually listed every other day or so. ALTAR BOYZ was on there, though, for $23, I think. FIDDLER, VIRGINIA WOOLF and STEEL MAGNOLIAS are all on, too.

I might be able to get you a free ticket for Suzanne on Friday, though, if you're interested!

RE: Flights to NYC - Yes, the fares are up again.  However, air travel is still picking up again, especially to New York.  Which after the happenings of 9/11 is a good thing - in the grand scheme of things.

The big culprit right now with airline fares is the fuel surcharge - for some airlines it's as much as $20.00 now.  -Used to be just $5.00.

And summer has always been peak season and peak fare times, so...

Well off to the theatre to make improvements in my choreography requested by the director....whew!  How do you direct a musical and NEVER leave your chair?

Well...

I remember playing some auditions for a production of Evita many years ago...  The director set an empty chair in the middle of the room.  When he was auditioning the Mistresses, he told them to pretend that the chair was their lover... "Now be happy with 'him'... Be mad at 'him'... Make love to 'him'.."

I've never seen so many confused and disillusioned faces leave an audition room before.  -And I had to hide behind the piano after a while.

Well... It's almost 1:30 here, and I need to be in midtown at 8:45 for a pre-audition day breakfast with my conductor...

Goodnight.

DR Iris - I've heard about Pomme Frites... Is this the same 'chain' that used to have a location in midtown?  A block up from Mamma Mia!?

Another LONG day, with LONG drives, but I'm back in the home environment, and thankfully I'd left the air conditioning on, so it's nice and cool inside.

Show was a bit strange tonight - some of it went better, some of it went not so well, but I'll talk about it in the notes.
