Two of my favorite waltzes have of course been mentioned.

One by DR MS - The Blue Danube

One by DR ELMORE - Out Of My Dream

I also like the Embassy Ball Waltz in MY FAIR LADY.

But if I had to choose only one waltz to dance to in a swallow tail coat with a beautiful lady in my arms it would be The Merry Widow Waltz!

You're several years late with that one. My group Aqabala recorded a pretty wonderful instrumental (if I do say so myself, and I do) called Brother, Can You Spare a Paradigm? Leslie Pfenninger of A&M Records fame (did she ever find your friend for you) has said it reminds her of Bacharach meets Mendes, which I take as very high praise indeed.

Waltzes:

Lover (Rodgers/Hart): one of the most sublime sets of sub-V7 sequences ever, long before jazz theorists had even invented sub-V7s.

The Face I Love (Valle): a nice trip through the "regular" circle of fifths by the Brasilian Valle brothers. Y'all probably know the Andy Williams version, but Marcos Valle's version(s) are the best.

Tres (Faith): One of the greatest original instrumentals from Percy's late career (on his most excellent Black Magic Woman album). He swings, baby.

Loved running into Rodzinski last night at Barrymore's!! He and the wife were on their way to see Strewelpeter, I was heading to All Shook Up... which I loved, and which the more "intelligent" of my friends just hated. The set and choreography and the socko performances made me so glad!!!

I recall that for a couple of summers the DJ at the Boatslip (in Provincetown) would begin Tea Dance each day with a medley of Strauss waltzes. Therefore, I have lost my sense of which is which. But I do like a Strauss waltzes, in general.

And, for another bitter, ironic Sondheim waltz (I had a good chuckle the day I realized that "A Little Priest" was a waltz): "Could I Leave You?"

Also, and I will defer to the musicologists who frequent the board, but isn't "Shall We Dance?" a polka, not a waltz? ("It's rather simple, the polka, really. It's just one, two three, AND.") I know we all think of it as a waltz because it's so grand, but I believe it's a polka.

As DR Ron Pulliam can tell you, my favorite waltz piece is the "Madame Bovary Waltz" by Miklos Rozsa. I only had it on LP on an MGM soundtrack series from England, and he very kindly burned me a CD with it in both mono and stereo recordings along with other selections. It is among my most prized possessions, and I play it often. In fact, it will probably be in my media check tomorrow because just talking about it has made me want to listen to it again.

I'm afraid Nadia on IDOL is falling into the same category as Tamyra Gray and Latoya London, outstanding vocalists who are not audience friendly. I have to say that I think she's been VERY inconsistent. Some weeks, she has had wonderful performances, but I did not like her songs either last week or this week. Audience good will can only take you so far. Give the audience something they don't care for, and you can dropfrom the top to the bottom quickly (as witnessed Fantasia last year who went from a top three group to a bottom three group in one week's time).

I still think all the people eliminated thus far have deserved it based on their inate ability and performing skills. I have no quibbles with who has gone home (yet).

Anwar is another who has obvious skill but has been sliding downhill for a couple of weeks now. He needs to find a song he can sing with purity and simplicity (much like COnstantine's marvelous rendition this week) and forget about all the flashy and tiresome melisma he's relying on to get him through a number.

Yeah, I wasn't sure about this that's why I asked "does it count?" But oh, when I think of a waltz I think of "Anna" wearing that beautiful swirling dress dancing in that huge ballroom and wish that I , just once, could wear such a dress and have such a dance.....(sometimes I'm such a girly girl!)

More IDOL comments:

I really believe that the top row (with the exceptions of Nadia and Jessica) were seated in the order of placement in the voting. They certainly corresponded to the busy signals I got when I called their numbers at ten minute intervals.

Nikko was first, COnstantine second, Carrie third, and Bo fourth, and that very clearly parallels the length of busy signals I got when calling their numbers.

As I said Tuesday night, I never got a busy signal at all for Jessica, Anwar, Nadia, Scott, or Vonzell after the first ten minutes.

I don't think they were sitting in any particular order (i would be amazed if after getting voted out if nikko was placing first). But am I the only one who can tell who will be bottom 3 just by looking at how they are sitting?

I saw constantine/nikko/carrie sitting in the first seats and i was like "wow nadia or bo is bottom 3".

Then i could see it was between anwar/anthony and vonzell for the last place in the bottom 3.

It sort of cracks me up that they do someone like scott by himself (for the last place in the bottom group). And he seemingly is on pins and needles. Can't he see that there are 3 people beside him (and it will be one of them to leave). I suppose Idol could do things differently. But they have been doing it the same way all this time!
