As DR SWoody pointed out - we've just had the shortest day so I guess that means the longest night - why then am I so sleepy?

DR OZDerek had more induced sleep yesterday. Vibes would be appreciated. I suspect he is on first name basis with the staff at one of our leading hospitals here. I'll speak with Derek later this morning.

Thanks to OZDerek, Colin and I watched "Stage Beauty" last night. Good film but not helped by Mr Fenton's music at all. I thought it was "Cry Freedom" leftovers.

DR JRand, I always thought the first SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES was HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE. I could be wrong, but I have always thought so and have also read this in histories of broadcasting.

That was a milestone in showing films on TV because NBC made the decision to show the film pan and scan rather than letterboxed and thus began a policy that it still in effect today with almost all films on all networks, both broadcast network and cable. Very few show aspect ratio correct versions of films, all because NBC chose with that first broadcast of a Cinemascope movie not to show it in letterbox.

The installation and calibration took 4 hours, 35 minutes. I was still not quite satisfied when I left, and then on the way home, thought of something, one little switch I forgot to flip. Made a call to my brother and will guide him through it to bring it "up to code."

Anyway, the picture was stunning, and he was very pleased with the sound (but I wasn't). But we'll get there.

Good Afternoon!

I drove here.

I drove there.

I ate here: Moby Dick House of Kabob.

I ate this: combination kabob platter - ground sirloin and lamb (one each), tandoori bread, basmati rice, grilled tomatoes, yogurt/cucumber/mint sauce, herb plate (watercress, parsley, radish and feta cheese).

I ate there: Heidelberg Pastry Shoppe

I ate that: A slice of Heidelberg Torte - almond sponge cake with chocolate chips baked in, raspberry jam filling, chocolate buttercream icing, covered with chocolate shavings.

I drove someplace else.

I drove around some more.

And just for kicks, I snacked here: Baskin-Robbins - a Kiddie Scoop of their Daiquiri Ice in a cup.

I walked around a bit.

I drove home.

I'm still full.

I can't think of any Audrey Hepburn performance I DON'T like. I don't much like HOW TO STEAL A MILLION, but it has to do with an overlong running time and a script that isn't witty enough to do justice to such a great cast. But she's usually great in everything.

Another film that doesn't measure up to her great talent: PARIS WHEN IT SIZZLES.

And I, too, was devastated to read in 1967 that she wasn't going to be concentrating on making films any more. After those two stunning performances in TWO FOR THE ROAD and WAIT UNTIL DARK, she must have been offered the moon to do films in the late 60s and early 70s. However, that IS just about the time that women's roles started drying up and many great actresses were having a hard time finding worthwhile roles to play.

I would love to have asked her what films she was offered that she turned down in the years between WAIT UNTIL DARK and ROBIN AND MARIAN.

It was a nice afternoon for a drive. Windows down. Not too much traffic.

I ended up heading back over to McLean to see if I could find the Japanese goods store I had read about. I came across their website, and found the address. Then after consulting Mapquest, I headed out.

Well, it appears they need to update their website. The address was correct, unfortunately, the store inventory left a bit to be desired. The website touted a nice "bento box" selection - I was hoping to grab lunch there. Alas, no more bento box section. They did have the usual items I've seen in other Asian supermarkets, but since this is a small store in a rather tony neighborhood, the pricing was not as friendly. Half of the downstairs was filled with homemade-looking dubs of Japanese movies. I didn't see a commercial looking label in site - but maybe that's what they're supposed to look like.

*If I had noticed a section for Japanese musicals, I would have picked up one for DR MBarnum. Alas, since I cant read katakana nor kanji....

But it was nice to finally find this place I first heard about a couple of years ago. Too bad I didn't find it a couple of years ago.

François de Paris, Please don’t feel bad about telling me about Meat Loaf. Like I said, you can get the wrong impression of a person if you don’t really know them. You know, maybe we should work on a Europe and/or Oz gathering........

Tomovoz, I like your favorite painters paintings as well! Very, very nice. I also wanted to ask you a question. How cold is it in Oz right now? If you’re in winter, do you get snow where you’re at or is it more like a Florida winter? No snow but still can get pretty chilly.

So, after my trek to the Japanese store, I headed over to the nearby Moby Dick House of Kabob. Always a great meal, and their tandoori bread/pita is some of the best in town.

Then I took some back roads back into Arlington. I noticed a few differences along this route - a new Starbucks (surprise!

), the Greek bakery was long gone, etc.

...Oh! Look the Heidbelberg Pastry Shoppe! So... After drooling over the amazing selection of baked goods, I settled on the slice of their Heidelberg Torte. I decided to take a breather, and I had my cake in their little cafe area.

Then it was up the street where they had just remodeled one of the older strip malls in Arlington. In fact, this particular neighborhood is now being called "New Arlington" due to all the refurbishing going on there. I found the new Italian place that recently got a rave in the Post, and the Mexican taqueria that I've been reading about for years. The little Thai place was still there next to the Baskin-Robbins. And since I hadn't been to a Baskin-Robbins in ages...

-It was a small, Kiddie scoop!

I remember her commenting, when announcing her retirement, that "...now Mia Farrow can get all my parts."

Didn't happen, of course. How could it have!!!

Well, since it was a nice day outside, and I was in a nice neighborhood, I decided to explore a little bit on foot, ice cream cup in hand.

Whoever did the sprucing up of this strip mall did a very nice job. And I noticed they even added a parking deck in the back! And with all the good restaurants crammed into there, I'm guessing they need the extra parking now.

One very happy re-discovery was noticing that Mothers Macaroons had reopened! What a great bakery, and great macaroons, what else?!?!? Lots of different flavors, plus other baked goods (cookies, cakes, pastries, etc.). The last time I had driven by, I had notice that another business had taken it's place... Ah, well. But when I headed in today, I asked the clerk if the store had closed down for a while. She that they owner did close up shop for a while to take care of some family business, but she reopened a couple of months ago.

*When I worked at Foxes Music, instead of bringing in donuts on Saturday mornings, we would bring in Mothers Macaroons. And it was a shock to see it had closed up since I've always thought the place was very buy and doing great business. Very nice to see she's back.

-Alas, I did not buy any macaroons today, but the week is still young.

OH!

And since I don't think I've answered this yet on here...

My place in New York will be in Harlem. I've arranged a sublet for two months for now that can be extended if needed. I actually was tipped off to this place by Nick with whom I was staying with in March - and who is currently down in Roanoke working with DR Ben's ever-lovin' Ant.

It's a two-floor, four bedroom apartment. I'll have two roommates, but the place is kind of big by NYC standards, so there's plenty of space, and I'll have my own bedroom. Two full baths. One small living room on one floor, a larger living space on the other. Full size kitchen. A/C. Washer/dryer in the apartment(!!!). Private, fenced-in backyard(!!!!!). And the house is wired for DSL, so I'll have a fast internet connection too! And my share of the rent is quite reasonable - a veritable bargain.

Like I said, I'm currently signed on their for two months, but it could easily go to three since Nick has some more work out of town. I have a few other friends who will be making the move up to NYC in September, so I may look into getting an apartment with one of them later. Or I may see about getting - and affording - a place on my own.

But for now, it should do nicely. I just want to be up there. As long as I have my bed and my suitcases packed with clothes, I'll be fine. I have some audition work lined up already, and I'm planning on doing some pit observances just to get my face in front of all those conductors.

I'm just looking forward to being up there, and spending time with my friends. And making some new ones as well.

Very rare for snow near where I live Danise - despite being in the hills. Today's maximum temperature is supposed to be about 55 degrees F. (13 degrees C).
At the moment it is 9.30am approx and the the temperature is about 40 degrees F.

BTW: DR Danise - François is not on the board for another two days.

I shall pass on all good vibes to OzDerek. He is back at work today after yesterday's explorative work! (Results next monday).
