Can anyone tell me if this is a scam I need to worry about, a scam I don't need to worry about or NOT a scam, and I do need to worry.

I get an email today from Paypal saying they have frozen activity on my account while they wait for some sort of verification from me.

The only thing is, I don't have a Paypal account, never have. Does this mean someone has tried to set one up in my name? How did they get my email address, anyway??

I don't use Paypal or ever order anything over the web due to a fear of being scammed, and here I get this anyway! Help!

And how does someone make a two-foot gash in someone else's floor before they realize they need to not be moving a couch like that?

It is a scam Rodzinski. I get about 3 or 4 e-mails a day at work like that...and my Paypal account isn't even registered with my work e-mail.

They probably send out thousands and thousands of those e-mails hoping that at least a portion of those people might  actually have Paypal accounts and fall for it.

Just delete and ignore.

Now if some deposed King from Mozambique offers you 2 million dollars......

Here is the text of said email, so maybe you ebay/Paypal savvy folk can tell me what to think:

"As part of our security measures, we regularly screen activity in the
PayPal system. We recently noticed the following issue on your account:

Recent account activity has made it necessary for us to collect
additional verification information.

For your protection, we have limited access to your account until
additional security measures can be completed. We apologize for any
inconvenience this may cause.

From 1st March  2005 PayPal requires your Personal Identification Number. This is the latest security measure against: identity theft , credit card fraud and unauthorized account access.

PayPal will verify it with your bank records for your own protection.
If you provide a wrong PIN your account will be suspended for unauthorized account access. Due our latest security improvements PayPal became a global leader in online payments.

To review your account and some or all of the information that PayPal
used to make its decision to limit your account access, please visit
the Resolution Center. If, after reviewing your account information,
you seek further clarification regarding your account access, please
contact PayPal by visiting the Help Center and clicking "Contact Us".
We thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
Please understand that this is a security measure intended to help
protect you and your account. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Yes DRRODZINSKI - forward that email to spoof@paypal.com and they will let you know that it is indeed a scam and that you should ignore.  By sending it to them with the link and the email address, they can work on getting it stopped.

DR MBarnum and I have the same tastes in nuts - nutmeats, that is!  :D

I really like to eat them without mixing other foods with them, but an Almond Joy and pecans or peanuts or cashews in fudge are just fine, too. (Almond Joy is one of the great American candy bars.)

I was really looking forward to a discourse by DR TCB on the word "nutmeat, but he showed such admirable restraint that I have to congratulate him!

I'm thinking his son and daughter have been having a MAJOR effect on him!

I just ordered BEWITCHED this morning since it is no longer a pre-order, and I could use the "supersave" discount code at Deep Discount. Ended up being $23.

Thanks for doing that research on SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES, DR JRand. I've had that piece of trivia in my mind for years, and I am glad to know it can continue to lodge there gathering the proverbial dust and cobwebs.

DR Rodz, I get these messages all the time, too.  Not only from PayPal, but from eBay, Amazon and Earthlink.  It's a form of scam called Phishing.  Like DR MB said, ignore them.

If I had a dollar for every one of these types of e-mail I've received, I bet I would have close to $30 by now!

I saw the film versions of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN and BELLS ARE RINGING for the first time on SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES. Also a string of Paramount movies like SABRINA (though I saw that at the movies too on a double bill paired with BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S).

"Saturday Night at the Movies" is where I saw "With A Song in My Heart" which was instantly my favorite movie of all time.

It remains high on my list of all-time favorites.

Don't click on the link in the email!

Yes I would definitely recommend forwarding the email to paypal.

But a question.  Does clicking on the link do any harm? Or is it only if you fill out any info.  I've gotten similar emails before.  And I think I sometimes click on the link just to see how close the site looks to the real thing.

People advise against clicking on links like that because doing so adds a cookie to your PC's cache...and that opens you up to receiving every piece of spam the sender transmits.

If you get something out of the blue, you're probably just a random hit.  Giving them a cookie means they can send you anything anytime...and they pass it along to other associates.

My advice is to never open any e-mail unless you know who sent it before you open it.

I'll admit to being overly cautious on venturing to these sites.  I'm afraid that the site might attempt to infect my PC with a trojan virus or some kind of tracking cookie that I could do without.

Yeah, like RLP says.
