I know what you mean Ben, I use my virus and ad/spyware killer progams weekly and always find stuff!

I still say there should be serious repercussions to those responsible!

The only two Jack Nicholson movies that I really like are the 1962 western THE BROKEN LAND and the 1958 juvenile delinquent film THE CRY BABY KILLER.

Thanks DR Ben.  I'm curious, what does it mean to "get all sorts of cookies" and what does it do when you clean them?  Do most people do this often?

Great stories and pics from Portland!  When are we going to get BK to the Bay Area?  There are a lot of fans of his in this area.  Any suggestions RLP?

Been busy planning our time in Paris.  We're going for research purposes - EL Eric is a pastry chef!  We're spending a week in Paris.  Scary going to a foreign country that you've never been to before.  I'm trying to learn simple phrases so I don't look like an idiot.  Also listening to the likes of "The Bakers Wife", "Lucky Stiff" and other French type musicals to try and pick some stuff up!!  We're going to spend a day at Disneyland Paris, which is really exciting, and I've been TRYING to find a decent fare (under $100) for a round-trip fare on the Eurostar to London for a day.  That doesn't look like it's happening.  Any suggestions for cheap fare for a day in London from Paris?

Favorite nuts - peanuts, cashews and almonds.

TCB, in answer to your question from the other night regarding John Abraham.....his father is Indian and his mother is Iranian.

John Abraham is his first and middle names. His real last name is Hindu but I don't remember it.

Best movie of his to get: PAAP ( I hadn't forgotten that title when we were talking about him).

I finally finished reading yesterday's posts.

When I read BK's post, Jose, I was thinking exactly like you.  Like minds think in aggregate, or something like that, I guess.

Matthew, have you checked Ryan Air? I have never flown them but I know they are like the late People Express here in the states. They have very low fares throughout Europe from what I understand.

Here is the link

For out of hand eating, peanuts and cashews, and roasted, unsalted almonds are faves, though I can't think of a nut I haven't liked, including Brazil/Butternuts.

Nuts in chinese food are A-OK by me.  Salads too.
Snickers pack a lot of peanuts into their bars (but I dont really care for the almond ones.  But for a peanut packing punch, nothing beats a Payday.  I have recently rediscovered those.

Pecans in pie and choc-chip cookies.  I much prefer them in baking than walnuts, which I occasionally find bitter.  Pecans are worth the extra $$ in my book.

I've loved the Portland pics.  I loved the revelation about DRs Jed and Ann.

Bruce Blanchard looks exactly the way his name would lead you to believe.  Too bad about the floor, though, DR JMK.

I LOVE Li-Lac chocolates.  Thanks for the heads up about their move.

I remember the night my brother DR Jay threw a HS graduation party.  my other brother and I were relegated to our room, my mother to hers.  (Remember, it's an apartment.)  Mom is in bed, watching I WANT TO LIVE on the NBC Saturday Night at the Movies (with its logo -- in red, I believe -- turning that imaginary corner in the middle of the screen....).  Well, doesn't half my brother's party end up on my mom's bed, watching the movie with her!

More later.  I think.

More later.

That was a milestone in showing films on TV because NBC made the decision to show the film pan and scan rather than letterboxed and thus began a policy that it still in effect today with almost all films on all networks, both broadcast network and cable. Very few show aspect ratio correct versions of films, all because NBC chose with that first broadcast of a Cinemascope movie not to show it in letterbox.
Sorry, Matt, but I think you're being unfair to NBC and the television broadcasters in general.  At the time, there were very few televisions capable of showing a letterboxed film without the picture being discouragingly small.  The notion of screens large enough to cover a wall of a room was still the stuff of science ficition.  (Wasn't this notion included in Farenheit 451, released in 1966?)

That being the case, the decision by NBC to use pan-and-scan made sense at the time.  That there has been little effort to change from the format to keep up with the available technology is due to both laziness and economics.

Several times, I've run into people in DVD departments who have asked me what the difference is between full screen and wide screen.  I'm amazed by the number of them (usually my own age or older) who decide they would rather have their televisions filled with an image, but it is what they are used to seeing.

Macadamia nuts - the great Australian nut. No! they're not native to Hawaii.
Is anything really native to Hawaii?

By themselves, I like cashews.  Walnuts are great in cookies.  And I like to serve oatmeal cooked with pecans and dried cranberries when I'm serving game.

OK, the idea of Hawaiian shirts comes from Hawaii.  But most of mine were made elsewhere.

Now if some deposed King from Mozambique offers you 2 million dollars......

This isn't from Mozambique, but close.  It's an actual e-mail that I just happened to receive today!:

Quote
Mr. John Jasper
FOREIGN REMITTANCE DEPT,
ABSA BANK LIMITED
JOHANNESBURG,SOUTH AFRICA.
E-MAIL:johnjasper115@webmail.co.za
TEL:27 73 755 5954

My name is MR.JOHN JASPER , I am the credit manager in my bank here in South Africa. I am contacting you of a business transfer, of a huge sum of money from a deceased account. Though I know that a transaction of this magnitude will make any one apprehensive and worried, but I am assuring you that everything has been well taken care off, and all will be well at the end of the day. I decided to contact you due to the urgency of this transaction. To ease your apprehension, I got your contact from the South African chambers of commerce and industry, foreign trade division.

PROPOSITION;
I am the account officer of a foreigner, named; Gerald Welsh who died in an air crash along with his wife on the 31st October 1999 in an Egyptian airline 990 with other passengers on board. You can confirm this  from the website below which was published by CNN.WEBSITE. http://www.cnn.com/US/9911/02/egyptair990.list/index.html

Since his death, none of his next-of-kin are alive to make claims for this money as his heir, because they all died in the same accident (May his soul rest in peace). We cannot release the fund from his account unless someone applies for claim as the next-of-kin to the deceased as  indicated in our banking guidelines. Upon this discovery, I now seek your permission to have you stand as a next of kin to the deceased, as all documentations will be carefully worked out by me for the funds (US$35,000,000.00) to be released in your favour as the beneficiary's next of kin. Because after four years the money will be called back to the bank treasury as unclaimed bills and the money shared amongst the directors of the bank. so it is on this note i decided to seek for whom his name shall be used as the next of kin/beneficiary to this funds rather than allow the bank directors to share this money amongst themselves at the end of the year.

It may interest you to know that we have secured from the probate an order of mandamus to locate any of the deceased beneficiaries. Please acknowledge receipt of this message in acceptance of our mutual business endeavor by furnishing me with the following information if you are interested.

(1).A Beneficiary name;. In order for me to prepare the PAPERPWORK for transfer of the funds in your name.

(2).Details particulars of your contact address.

(3).Direct Telephone and fax numbers;. For our personal contact.

I shall be compensating you with 25% of the total sum ,on final conclusion of this project for your assistance, US$500,000 will be given to charity from your locality based on your recommendation while the balance shall be for me for investment purposes. Because I intend to retire after the conclusion of this transaction. If this proposal is acceptable by you, please endeavor to contact me immediately. Do not take undue advantage of the trust I have bestowed in you by informing you of this transaction from my bank as I will advise you to kindly desist from responding at all if you do NOT intend to render any assistance.

Endeavour to respond via my confidential and official email address
Thanks and best regards,

MR.JOHN JASPER ,

I always wonder how many people actually respond to this.  There have to be some or it wouldn't keep happening. :P And I do get the eBay scam e-mail several times a month, too. :P :P

Matthew, I'm jealous of your trip to Paris. I love the city and the country. I went to Disneyland Paris (it was then called EuroDisney) in 1991, the year it opened. It was great fun.

There is so much to see and do in Paris. Yes, some Parisians may be rude to you, but that happens in New York, too! I don't buy the idea that Paris, and the whole country, as a group, is rude. I have had lovely times in both Paris and all over northern France, in Honfleur, Deauville, Trouville, Caen and other cities. I would love to go back (almost 15 years since I was last there) again.

I remember some credits being letterboxed many, many years ago, but VERy few movies - if any - letterboxed on broadcast television.

Well.....yes, DR RLP, winner of the sparkling prize - I got what I paid for.  THE WILD RIDE is actually THE MILD RIDE.  Nicholson with his long, long neck is playing basically the same character he always plays, and this movie was a 1960 Filmgroup release.  Written by two women, there is some great dialog:

This chick is cold.  She turned Dave shallow.  This is chick is nowhere.  This chick doesn't exist to Johnny.

Jack as Johnny races some kind of midget Indy open wheel car in a 10-lap race that seems to be run at about 40 mph.  Everyone has a picnic at the lake.  And DR MBARNUM is correct, the heroine's hairstyle is the bomb - her own special DA in the back with curls and waves high on top.  She also attends the car race in white gloves, pearls, and a dress with a cowl collar worn off the shoulders.

And you can tell the bad girls, they only fasten ONE strap of their bathing suits.

yes, folks, worth all of a dollar, THE "WILD" RIDE is the type of movie where the cops drive 1958 Chevrolet Biscaynes and even the meanest, toughest, roughest big stud men leaders of the gang who drive '57 Ford convertibles - set the parking brake before they hop over the door to exit their rods.

Is it just me or does anyone else have trouble finding Denis Leary credible as a firefighter on the F/X "Rescue Me"?

My main problem with him is his hair....he has gobs and gobs of hair...a pompadour, of sorts...it looks r-i-d-i-c-u-l-o-u-s...as much so as does Donald Trump's comb-over, IMO.

No firefighter would have hair that long and full!

It's as ludicrous as Sophia Loren not aging at all in "El Cid"...!

DR George, I get three to four of those a day.  And what makes me mad about those is that I wasn't getting any until I made a contribution to Unicef after the tsunami disaster.  Unicef must have published a list of people who gave.  Thanks a lot!, says I.

Funny you mention it, RonP. I was on the train last night and there was  a poster for Leary's show. The poster has him falling from a great height, but he looks like he has a ton of makeup on, and I thought, Dennis Leary is always trying to convince me he's a hard-bitten cop or a hard-bitten fireman, or a hard-bitten whatever,  and I just ain't buyin' it.
