And just how many ways can you stage "How Much Is That Doggie In the Window"?

Does anyone remember ABC's Music Scene, which was a sort of an updated Hit Parade?

When The Archies' "Sugar, Sugar" was the number one song for the third week, they had the Staple Family's Choir do the song in gospel style.

I knew Lawrence Welk wasn't cool; that it was decidedly old fashioned and corny. More often thatn not on Saturday night, we'd watch at least part of it.

Yes, DR td, I liked the theme song to the Smothers Brothers' sitcom, too:

"Tonight you'll meet two brothers who just happen to be us,

Though Tom is slightly different, that problem we will now discuss. . . ."

And for those who don't know what his problem was, he was dead and appeared on the show as Dick's guardian angel.

Carol Burnett, Sonny and Cher, Donny and Marie, those were the chief variety shows for me. I remember when KISS appeared on Donny and Marie.

I do remember THE BIG SHOW with Steve Allen.

I finished LITTLE MISS BROADWAY which I enjoyed thoroughly. Always loved the songs in this score.

When it finished, I hit the menu button that put on the colorized version just to see what it looked like.

Well, I HATE colorization. The color is never rich or deep enough to pass as Technicolor, and it's annoying when they want something to be white (or black), they don't layer on fake white (or black); they leave the white (or black) from the black and white film and then everything else around it looks weird with color trowled on.

I watched the courtroom musical numbers in their entirety in "color," and found it funny to see the wood in the court painted yellow and blue. But, unlike older colorized films, the color that was there was pretty much stable and didn't have trouble keeping up with moving images as it used to when James Cagney would dance in the colorized YANKEE DOODLE DANDY.

Last night one of the experienced performers in MY THREE ANGELS who knows everything about theatre, directing, acting, and props (after all he has been in ONE other play!) said that he can't carry the actress he is supposed to carry in and hold her as long as he is supposed to.

His solution:  Cut four of MY lines.

I stood up and said,  every line I have I will say.  The solution to NO problem includes cutting ANY of my lines.  In fact, I may add a few.

The director tabled the problem so that it can be worked on tonight, but I think I will get to keep all my lines.

Then, I watched DAISY KENYON from the DVR recorded the other day off the FMC.

This is a very strange Joan Crawford movie. Not much camp value here (Otto Preminger was the producer/director), but not much fun either. For a story featuring the love triangle of Dana Andrews-Joan Crawford-Henry Fonda, it's about the least demonstrative melodrama ever made. It has NONE of the frenzied melodramatics that make her Warners films of the late 1940s like POSSESSED, HUMORESQUE and FLAMINGO ROAD so entertainingly over the top. And the development of her marriage to Fonda is dull enough to induce sleep. The most fun is hearing Dana Andrews' slick lawyer calling men "honey bunch" and "sweetie pie" when he gives them orders.

I'm not expecting to see this among FOx's Studio Classics any time soon, despite all the stars and famous pedigree.

Another movie that should be out on DVD, Tommy Smothers in Brian DePalma's GET TO KNOW YOUR RABBIT. This is just a really good movie, stolen by the collective comic genius of Orson Welles, John Astin, and Alan Garfield. And the sublime Katharine Ross.
Tommy "drops out" of the corporate world to become a tap-dancing magician.

Same actor who decided since he had time left after setting the table, that he would pull the armchairs up around the table as well so there would be six chairs.

Of course when everyone else came out, there was no place to sit....the chairs were gone.

I am beginning to hate this person - and that is a waste of energy.  Since Adolphe the snake's cage is still being worked on, HE demanded that he have something to carry so that he can get used to handling a prop.  So I went upstairs and got him a nice purse.  At least that amuses me while I watch him try to remember to say his lines.

Pretty brazen, even for an actor. Glad you stood your ground.
