Well I have a question for the DR's that was sparked by the notes today from MR BK.
Explain please QED the difference between:

Capri Pants
Matador Pants
Toreador Pants
Pedal Pushers
The spelling.

Wow all this skating talk. I used to watch skating a lot. I loved the Elvis Stoiko (sp?), Kurt Browning years.  I even remember the 1988 Calgary games when Elizabeth Manley won her silver. Now that was exciting skating!

That was exciting!

BK, thank you for answering my question.  I highly recommend Bombshell, Redheaded Woman, and most of all Red Dust.  (Although I honestly have enjoyed all of the Harlow pics I've seen so far, those are probably my three favorites.)

Now please stop futzing around doing lutzes.  If someone were doing them with you, both of you could fall on your butts and you'd wind up on the floor looking like a couple of sadsack mutts.  I appreciate we all need a little excitement in our lives to keep us from falling into ruts, but when a person begins doing a lutz, we must all as a group say, "Tut, tut!"

DR LULU you crack me up!  ;D

Ah yes, DRJANE you were singled out as being especially interested!

Thanks TCB - but I meant the adjective not the noun.  :P

When did you see Vera Ellen?

WEL: What an excellent question you've posed to us all.  I think I'd love to read a biography on one of those fabulous dames of the '30s, like Joan Blondell, Iris Adrian, Patsy Kelly, Ann Sothern or Una Merkel.  You know, the type who was always the "blowsy" (a terrific word that has sadly fallen out of favor) best friend of the female lead.

Ben: Wow, you've been to England, eh?  I envy you.  Did you stay around London, or travel elsewhere?  I loved London, and hope to visit it (and the rest of England) again someday.

I'm pretty sure Spotted Dick is what kept my grand-uncle Horace out of the Army.

Ron I LOVE the new photo.  It makes me laugh.  Sweet Dickens.  Eight was too young.  Now I’m crying.  He was gorgeous at five.  I’m laughing again with the picture of Dickens and Vickie.

All this skating talk has made me feel bad I deleted my recordings.  I went back to TIVO figure skating wish list and told it to begin recording again.  I just hope I have time to watch and  catch up on the current crop of skaters I’m not too familiar with.  So which book should I read ZERO TOLLERANCE or the INSIDE EDGE?

I would like to read a biography of Deana Durbin since I believe her story had a happy ending.

Eight inches of snow in Portland and school was canceled again.

MBarnum I’m sure your sister doesn’t want to remember.  I couldn’t have been more than eight when neighbor’s cat had a litter of kittens.  I begged my parents for one but the answer was always no.  Fortunately the neighbors decided to keep my favorite kitten themselves which was almost as good as my taking it home.  I can still remember watching as the kitten was run over by a car.  I will not go into details.  I assure you the entire neighborhood heard my response to what I was watching.

Lulu, your mention of Joan Blondell is good and it made me think of Celeste Holm as well. I would like to read a bio of her.

We just got back a week ago from London. I'll tell tales about our trip later, including our trip outside of London to Gedling and Nottingham. Suffice it to say, we had a supercalifragilisticexpialidocius (did I spell that correctly?) time. It was very hard to leave the foggy city.

On January 17th the calendar lists Noel's birthday. It also says "Opening night of my new play" Silly question but I'll ask anyway. Are we to assume that the new play opening on January 17th is also Noel's. A birthday and opening night on the same day. Quite a series of events.

I, for one, would like to know more about those pictures from Mars.

Every time I see what I think are pictures from Oz on TV, it turns out to be animation from NASA about what they "think" things looked like when their equipment approached, and then landed on, Mars.

I want the real deal.

Are we getting the real deal, BK?

Huh?  Huh?  Is the real deal out there?

If it is, where do I have to look to see the real deal?

For the official
"Real Deal" go to [urlhttp://www.jpl.nasa.gov/index.html]JPL[/url]

Here you'll find:

Those of us in the "know" (or "now" as BK would say) suspect they are holding this one back:

It was one of Vinnie's favorites, though.

Speaking of whom...what's the dear boy up these days; still waiting for his Pulitizer for best sustained performance in liner notes?

My son just called from Portland.  The store he works for is closed today as they didn’t have much business at the mall yesterday.  He was walking to Radio Shack since the Trolley isn’t running today.  As we were talking huge chunks of ice were falling off a building and hit one of the few cars on the road.  He had to move out of the way to avoid the falling ice.

Freedom!  Freedom!

Ah, a Shenandoah reference... Or maybe an Aretha Franklin one if you prefer... Actually, I guess for Shenandoah it would be:

Free-dom, Free-ee-dom..

That's much better!

Well, I finished the last chart!  And I'm about to head into downtown DC to deliver the goods.  AND I had one of those "Eureka!" moments when it came to a certain part of one song... It's amazing what will come to you when you switch gears for a little bit and come back to it!  :D

In any case, I'll check up on all the posts(!) once I'm back - and hopefully, the rush hour won't be too bad - it wasn't yesterday.  And if it is, I can get my fix of the afternoon "shock jocks", Don & Mike... A nice, sometimes raucous, sometimes laughable, and sometimes questionable diversion.

Ciao for niao!

Do you mean the truth behind the reason Natalie Wood divorced him the after their first marriage?

Ah yes....Toller Cranston wrote a book called ZERO TOLLERANCE about his ice skating experiences - it's pretty good.

He is also an artist.  Click the link to check out his paintings.

Also an artist? Debatable. I stopped eating at a favorite restaurant when they redecorated the place and hung his paintings on the walls.

Didn't Lutz once partner Carr in an accounting firm?

Lulu --- Years and years ago, Joan Blondell wrote an autobiographical novel.  I think if she didn't call it a novel she would have been sued by June Allyson for the things Ms. Blondell said about her.  Since the names were changed and it was called "fiction" she couldn't sue.  I think the book was called CENTER DOOR FANCY.

Suffice it to say, we had a supercalifragilisticexpialidocius (did I spell that correctly?) time.

You were doing fine 'till you got to the antepenultimate - you need to add a "u" to get "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious".

DR Ben,
Belated thanks for the oatmeal input.

Years ago I edited a book by Toller Cranston's coach. She was a marvelous coach, but writing was not among her strengths (and, to be fair, English was not her first language). One of her best lines: "Personally, I am against falling."

You're right, Jane, driving around the Northwest is almost worse today than it was yesterday during the snow.  The temperatures have gotten above freezing so there is some melting going on, but not enough to clear off the roads.  One of my co-workers described it as trying to drive in a Slurpie.  Standing water that is stuck between piles of snow is causing cars to stall out.  It is a mess.

Great description.  That is how I felt walking in it a few days ago.  The biggest problem in Portland is they simply aren't use to dealing with snow and don't have the capability to do so.  My son was surprised to see the streets plowed as well as they were.
