Next came MARLENE DIETRICH: LIGHT AND SHADOW which I just watched last weekend. I did watch it since it was so interestingly done, but now I think I won't want to watch it again for a long, long time.

With the time I had left over, I watched the first part of MY FAIR LADY. Didn't get very far into it - basically "Why Can't the English," but the transfer looks quite lush and beautiful. Had not watched it in awhile and never upconverted until tonight.

As for the one network show I watched tonight - LAW & ORDER - he writers based their case on Britney Spears and Kevin Federline. A new partner for Jesse Martin and a new ADA for Sam Waterston joined the cast today. The new detective switched over from Dick Wolf's CONVICTION (though she played a lawyer on that, and now she's playing a different character).

Enjoyable season opener.

The ratings for KIDNAPPED, the show that replaced LAW & ORDER on WEdnesday night, weren't terrific, so I'm wondering if NBC will move L&O back to WEdnesdays if KIDNAPPED continues garnering mediocre or worse ratings. Seems like they would have learned from HEIST last year that folks aren't really interested in a serialized drama in that hour.

Back from a lovely evening with my friend, Andy. We went to dinner, and then I walked him into the show (Cabaret). It was my first time seeing the show all the way through in a week. It's in good shape (in spite of/despite the reviews - ??).

DAMN IT TO HECK!

I cried my eyes out at the season finale of GHOST WHISPERER last Spring; I didn't realize I was going to cry all over again as the new season got under way. As much as I hate the fact that Andrea is dead, I think the addition of Jay Mohr in the recurring role of the college professor will help the show. And it could have been worse, they could have killed off Melinda's husband which would have been a real tragedy.

We went to Pier 7 for dinner since it's right across the street from the theatre - I just did not want to chance the very unpredictable Friday afternoon traffic, and get stuck in Virginia. In any case...

Pier 7, if you can't guess from the name, is a seafood restaurant. Well... As Andy and I were served our salads, a couple was seated at the table next to us...

"Oh, Pier 7 - A Seafood Restaurant... That's what it says on the menu.
-Oh, yes, I see that now.
"Hmm... There really is a lot of seafood on this menu."
-Yes, there is.
"Do you think you'd like to have some seafood tonight?"
-I think I will, but let me check out the rest of the menu.

He ended up ordering the Prime Rib. His wife had the Maine lobster.

*And if anyone is interested, I had the Shrimp Norfolk, and Andy had the Seafood Newburg.

And, actually, it was an interesting night at Cabaret tonight. Well, more like it was interesting right after the show...

A woman in the front row was so affected by the ending of the show, that she started sobbing. And her sobbing was quite "vocal". In fact, you could hear her before the curtain call started and during the call. And after the curtain call was finished and the actors had left the stage.

Someone in the audience eventually asked out loud if there was a doctor in the house, and then some ushers and the house manager came down to check on her. She said she was OK, but that she was just totally overcome with emotion. And she was still crying. I went ahead and ran backstage to get her a box of tissues, some tea and some water...

And while waiting backstage, it was very easy to tell that the actors had been affected as well by her reaction. Some people thought that she was having a heart attack. The whole situation definitely put a pall over the proceedings - and since the ending of Cabaret is not a happy one already...

I took my niece to see the touring co. in Atlanta (this is her very favorite show) and at the end of Act 1, I got the feeling that Elphaba was going to fly into the air but then she never did. The show was very impressive nonetheless.

Actually, sometimes "it" malfunctions on Broadway too.

*I was actually surprised that it took as long as it did for anyone to come to her aid. Yes, the woman was sitting with friends, but it really did take a couple of minutes for someone from the theatre to check on her. -And since I knew how to jump the fence as it were to get backstage...

I remember when Chuck Wagner came off the road company of B&B to take over the role of the Beast on Broadway. Chuck is a big man - tall and brawny. He had asked the stagehands if the winch would be strong enough to carry him. They said it was built to handle X-amount of weight. Well, Chuck was a couple of pounds over that X-amount. And he told them so. Well... The first night he went on, guess what happened? Or rather what did not happen. And guess what did not happen his second night?... or his third?... Well... Needless to say, they promptly got a new winch for him.

*And those were some mighty "pregnant" blackouts.

Been back a little while from having dinner at Pietrasanta with Tom, Colin and Larry, and then seeing ...SINGING NUN along with Tom and Colin.

SINGING NUN SPOILER

I must say i was shocked at where ...SINGING NUN went in its second act and how effectively it dealt with some serious subject matter, making it all the more powerful due to the huge amount of laughter which preceded the serious material. And the irreverence continued during the powerful aspcts, without diminishing the beauty of those moments in any way. Thoroughly engaging and witty score by Andy Monroe, beautifully orchestrated by Elmore, and a laugh-out-loud-then-choke-you-with-emotion book by Blair Fell. I wish this show a great future life.

It was absolutely lovely to spend some time with Tom and Colin, first at the restaurant (along with Larry) and then at the show. I think I restrained myself admirably from punning too much, and we all were surprisingly restrained about dishing too much.
