THE BIG PICTURE
Interpreting Academy's Cold Shoulder
By Patrick Goldstein, Times Staff Writer

You can bet everyone in Hollywood is debating how to read the Academy's refusal to give a best picture nomination to Miramax's "Cold Mountain," freezing the studio out of Best Picture contention for the first time in 11 years. Is it a true commentary on the film's merits or — gasp — payback for Miramax kingpin Harvey Weinstein's brass-knuckled Oscar campaigning in recent years?

If I were running Miramax, here's how I would read the academy's message: Give us a break from grand, high-priced star vehicles like "Cold Mountain." In an era where the big studios care more about merchandising action toys than making movies, it's time that Weinstein, the last great Svengali of quality films, went back to doing what he did best — being a feisty underdog, not Hollywood's playground bully.

so how much ruder is it to have them take a potty break during your soliloquy?
Makes me want to see TO BE OR NOT BE again. Jack Benny's face each time Robert Stack leaves is one (several) of the great moments of comedic film.

THE VIEW FROM OLYMPUS

And this (below) is a  15 min DVD?

This special program of patriotic songs sung by Judy Garland on her eponymous television show was prepared in the wake of the tragic events of September 11, 2001 to help lift the spirit of the US and its citizens. Containing songs such as "America the Beautiful," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," and "Smile," SONGS FOR AMERICA is not only seeking to provide an emotional tonic, but a financial one as well, as all proceeds from the sale of this program will be donated to the American Red Cross.

Evening all!

Danise I knew you would answer Noel’s question.    Your post was so great I had to read it out loud to Keith.  He would like to know if there are female counterparts to Werewolves.  He assumes, based on his viewing experience, the human canine corps is only male.  If female She-wolves do exist, can they have cubs?

Saw your post about the female werewolf, Jane, but didn't have time to answer you last night.

First, I should point out that there is a female werewolf in An American Werewolf In Paris.

I don’t seem to be able to recall how it was handled in any great detail but my own feelings on the matter is that women don't/can’t become them.  Certainly there would not be any cubs.

First, you have to take into account that a werewolf is not a naturally occurring species.  It is a curse brought about by offending a gypsy woman or being bitten by a werewolf. There is no real need for the werewolf to procreate.

Unlike the vampire, werewolves are not typically considered a sexual object--at least not that I'm aware of but I'm not going to go there.  Then you have your burly men, which is a whole other subject (not by much) but I'm not going to go there either.

I should also point out that werewolf behavior isn't that far off of your typical human male.  Think about it--they run around all night, make lots of noise, don't worry about how their hair is combed or their appearance, scratch in public and then come dragging home the next day, horribly sorry, swear they won’t do it again and within a month, they're out there again.  Except for the killing (unless you count the beer bottles) I can't see any difference between them and a club-hopping guy.

We women, on the other hand, already have one cycle to deal with that already has been known to strike fear into the heart of the bravest of men. Which would you rather face--a werewolf or a woman with PMS? I don’t think I have to tell you where the smart money would be.

Not to mention, no amount of werewolf spittle would make ME grow any more hair then I already have to deal with.  It's bad enough that I have to spend the time plucking my eyebrows and shaving without dealing with MORE facial/body hair.

No, werewolves are definitely a guy monster.

Let me go read the posts for today and I'll be back.

While TCB is on stage intoning "To Be, or not To Be", I'd be squirming thinking "To Pee, or not To Pee".

I have to tell you that the rudest behavior by audience members that I have witnessed has come, not from children or teens, but from people of an age at which they should know better.

Back in the days when I was acting in children's theater, we once did an open-air show  during which parents would often talk in a perfectly normal (meaning LOUD) voice to their kids all through the play. Drove me nuts.

When I was going to high school in Toronto, the school would once a year take a trip to Stratford. I'm sure the actors dreaded these student matinees. I have very vivid memories of seeing Christopher Plummer and Zoe Caldwell in ANTHONY AND CLEOPATRA. There was a moment in the show when Plummer came right downstage and did a kind of drunken belly dance. The kids went crazy, started throwing things, yelling (this after talking through the rest of the play). Plummer stopped and told the audience that unless they shut up he wasn't going to continue. They did and he did. Good for him!

LOL what a wonderful story, DRPANNI.  I too have dreaded performing for student matinees.  I just have a feeling that those kids would rather be anyplace else....except of course in the classroom.  And I am not sure what the teachers tell them, if anything.

Of course some of the kids want to see the play - but most of them have NO interest in it.  Why not limit it to drama classes or students who WANT to see it?  That wouldn't sell many tickets.  And of course theaters can point with pride in their grant requests that they served "this many" youngsters in their "Plays for High Schoolers" program!

Congratulations to Christopher Plummer!  Would that someone in some of our morning presentations of THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK would have said something to the little darlings who threw pennies onstage....God knows their teachers weren't saying anything...if they were even in the auditorium at the time!

NOW....I just finished watch "In This Our Life" and I must say that when Miss Bette Davis was let loose, she knew no bounds....hand wringing, eye popping, hip switching, hair pulling, she did it all and then some!  And her character's name was Stanley Timberlake.....a sister of Justin no doubt!

In the telefilm me and  My Shadows an acquaintance of mine who I worked with on Sirens and did a reading of a play I co-wrote played Judy's Father. Victor Garber I am not sure is out or not. He is gay. But he is not an "A" list actors so the tabloids generally leave him alone. He has gone to the Emmy Awards with a partner.

Ah - another "Me and My Shadows" story.....Thea Gill who plays the blonde lesbian on QUEER AS FOLK played Lucille Bremer in the film, but the scene was cut out....they were doing the "mirror" scene, and Miss Judy Davis complained repeatedly that Thea was blocking her in the shot, not unlike what happened when Garland and Bremer were filming the actual scene for MEET ME IN ST LOUIS.  Thea said it was NOT a happy experience for her, and being left on the cutting room floor made it even more so!  Her experience with Miss Davis was not pleasant.

Bruce:

Have you ever recorded any of your songs from the planned follow-up to the First Nudie Musical called Sailors! Sailors! It sounds like a hoot. And in they age of Don't Ask Don't Tell it might play very well if it was ever filmed.

DR Sandra has a new pic!  En garde!  :D

So - Cloris Leachman can't even audition for Minnie?

Then Benjamin would be related in a way to Freddy Krueger and the Twilight Zone cornfield!  ;D

Cloris can audition, if Caliborne can, too.

Colin, being a football follower, would have done so.

Now, when you say "football, " are you really talking about "soccer?"

Sailors would have been so much fun to do back then.  Probably still work, although the script would need a lot of futzing with.  I did record everything from Sailors, and I know I have it here somewhere because I was listening to it not so long ago.

I believe the female Wood & Mandarin Ducks are very similar.  We couldn't tell if there was a female Mandarin mixed in with our flock of Wood Ducks, just the male.

I often have trouble distinguishing female ducks. They often do look similar.  But I think you're right -- the female wood ducks and mandarins look similar, although they look quite different from other female ducks.

Danise, Keith very much appreciates your (apparently vast) knowledge of lycanthropy (he made me type that!) so much so that he swears he'll donate to every street gypsy in Ashland lest he angers them.  He says they may have ties to the "old country."

The lovely wife and I have attended several matinees with school children in London and I must say they have always behaved with impeccable manners and viewed the plays we've seen (stuff like Merry Wives of Windsor) with a great deal of engaged curiosity.  They've been some of the nicest audiences I've said with.  But by and large,  the British audiences are fairly well-behaved...the rudest behaviour usually comes from some audience member jabbering in a foreign tongue....or an American accent.

Must be on a dinner break.  My TIVO unit just froze whilst watching The Prize.  Froze, I tell you.  No buttons would work, standby wouldn't work, nothing, just call TIVO Bird's Eye for it was frozen.  I had to call customer care and they suggested unplugging it from the back of the unit which I did.  That did the trick, it rebooted itself and all is now well in TIVOland.

Oh DR ANN you got cable just in time for TCM's 21 Days of Oscar!!!

I love everything about this time of year...the memories of Oscars past and present...the whole over-the-top-ness of Oscar season.  The FABULOUSNESS of it all.

And I love TCM.  A few weeks ago, when I was flat on my injured back, I lay upon the couch and watched TCM for three solid days.  Helped me get through it with my sanity as intact as it ever was, it did.

Victor Garber, eh?  Who knew?
