DON'T WASTE THE POSTAGE ON A GET-WELL CARD!

Associated Press

California Man Sets Himself, American Flag, Christmas Tree on Fire to Protest Religious Names
Saturday , December 23, 2006

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A man used flammable liquid to light himself on fire, apparently to protest a San Joaquin Valley school district's decision to change the names of winter and spring breaks to Christmas and Easter vacation.

The man, who was not immediately identified, on Friday also set fire to a Christmas tree, an American flag and a revolutionary flag replica, said Fire Captain Garth Milam.

Kern County Sheriff's Deputy John Leyendecker said the man had a sign that read: "(expletive) the religious establishment and KHSD."

On Thursday, the Kern High School Board of Trustees voted to use the names Christmas and Easter instead of winter and spring breaks.

I finished the last episode on disc 5 of the MEDIUM set. This was the one where we learned that Det. Scanlon had once worked undercover in a drug ring and gotten hooked on drugs. Now three years clean, he comes across his former drug ring girl friend (whom he almost married).

Interesting episode and one that expanded our knowledge and understanding of Det. Scanlon a lot. In fact, it helped make him one of my favorite characters on the show.

I tried to log in from around 7:30 am EST until I left at 11 am.  I tried Netscape and Safari and neither would work.  It looks to me as though it was inaccessible for about 4 hours.  Anyway, we're back![move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]

Never been a big fan of it, to tell the truth. I know it won 6 Oscars the same year VIRGINIA WOOLF won 5, but I think WOOLF is a much greater film.

I've never seen it on the stage.

I was in it when I was at Monterey - guess I have bias.

I spent the remainder of the afternoon watching the entirety of the 1962 MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY. The film looks magnificent in this new transfer with sharp images and gorgeous color. True, compared to a more modern film like MASTER & COMMANDER, the Dolby Digital 5.1 sound can't quite measure up, but that tremendous BOUNTY score still can't be surpassed.

And while the film has always had a bum reputation, I think it plays beautifully and is easily as entertaining as BEN-HUR or DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, if not more so.

I have it on DVD. I ought to take it down and watch it again soon. Maybe I'm being unfair to it. Certainly willing to give it another spin.

Now for the TOD:

MARAT/SADE, pretty much the Royal Shakespeare Company theatrical presentation with a new violent ending and cuts in the text
SHAKESPEARE:  Zefferelli's R&J and The Taming of the Shrew
                         Trevor Nunn's Twelfth Night
Henry V, both Olivier and Branagh
MARY, MARY: I loved Jean Kerr as a kid and still do
THE RITZ: loved the play more
BAREFOOT IN THE PARK:  Mildred Natwick
BUTTERFLIES ARE FREE:  Eileen Herlie
THE CACTUS FLOWER
PICNIC
STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE
LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT
BLITHE SPIRIT

Well, I have my Christmas movies lined up. I'm starting with A CHRISTMAS STORY. When it's over I'll probably put in MIRACLE ON 34th STREET. I skipped it last year, and it's due a turn.

Francois - Are you perhaps thinking of:

Salmon to hold me too close.
Salmon to hurt me too deep.
Salmon to sit in my chair and ruin my sleep
And make me aware of being a lox

BK

What wrong turns do you think the film took?

Could it be going to the roadhouse dinner or whatever it is. This is from memory.

Also do you think the editing of the play for film (other than language) helped or hindered the play?

Yes! It also "works" with Sal Mineo, but that's going a bit too far, don't you think?
But "he gives me fever!"; salmonellose! >:(

Too bad Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolfe didn't have a theme song or something. If it did it probably would have been its 14th oscar nominaiton.

I intended to watch many, many DVDs today. But so far all I have watched is the remainder of DUM, which turned out to be a pretty crappy Bollywood movie. Too many ridiculous action scenes of the "matrix"  variety...but the song and dance numbers were fun...I should have just watched those.

But, oh Vivek has the most wonderful eyes! So I watched the whole darn movie.

and all and sundry other.

E & T I may be, be my heart is always here.

We are planning to slog through Christmas and Joe's family's annual, although shrunken, fest, and then on January 6 we're heading back to St. Croix for two weeks.  He loved it so much that he insisted I make reservations for us both before he returned home in September.

He also made at least six "let's-send-them-a-Christmas-card" friends, which hasn't happened to either of us while traveling in ever so long.

And all of those friends are planning to return to St. Croix and the Sand Castle Beach Resort on their next vacation.  This place attracts repeats.

Anyway, the Merriest and Merriest Christmas and other Holidays to all, and I'll try not to stay away so long.

We are doing maintenance and server upgrades all weekend long due to the holiday and end of the year so you will see some outages.

That is the response I got - hopefully they are finished and all will be well from now on.
