That first piece was done in 1956. The next film from 1958 was a formal filming of her legendary APPALACHIAN SPRING. Martha herself danced the bride, and of course she was way too old to be doing it, so her extensions aren't as long or graceful as a younger dancer might have brought to the role. Everyone else was sensational, and, of course, that Aaron Copeland score is unmatched.

My acting mishap also involves Fiddler On the Roof.

When I didn't get the role I wanted (Fyedka) I decided not to do the show. Flash forward several months. I ran into the director and asked me if I would come into the show and play the rabbi. As a favor to the director I did even though I was at least 50 years too young at the time. As a matter of fact the actor who played my son Mendel was 15 year OLDER than me.

I could not grow a beard so I made one every night. One night I wasn't feeling well and I was overheating. I had to hug one of the villagers goodbye and when I did beard came off on his costume. When I noticed it I made sure my back was to audience and made a hasty exit as I still had one more scene to do. I quickly made a new beard and made it back on stage for my final bit.

Also we had trouble with our Fruma Sarah. She was on a movable chair and the chorus boys who brought her on sometimes got over enthused and almost tipped her over.

The only on-stage mishap I saw was when the set of La Cage on Broadway malfunctioned right at the top of the show. The actor who had the first line made some ad-libbed crack. The audience laughed, and they were on the actor's side from there on in.

I heard about a local community theater production of Oklahoma where the house/barn fell down in the middle of a scene. A chorus boy strolled out, surveyed the damage, and said, in character, "Look, Pa, the house just done fell down!" And then all the chorus member rushed in to prop the thing back up. Sort of like the barn-raising scene from Witness or Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

Oy! Such a day. I had a good morning at Toyland and found some big errors to correct in the guidelines. After that a wonderful 3-hour meeting at Tony Walton's about a wonderful project that I hope will indeed happen. After that, it was back here to lay out the Plaza Hotel chart and write the transistions between numbers. It's long right now, I believe, so I'm sure we'll play it down tomorrow and do some trimming before freezing it.

So tomorrow morning, I'll begin the guideline cleanup , go to the taping from 1-3, and then head to St Clements for the 4:30 performance of THE PIPER.

Today I went to the office and did the books. Not a fun job when I've been out sick and doing other non income producing things. But the books are balanced and the bills are paid, so that's what counts. I allowed myself to buy one new fall outfit for work, but put back 2 others that I wanted but just shouldn't spend the money on right now. I felt really good about that.

Good Evening!

Back from rehearsal...

We basically ended up running the whole show. Twice! Since we are currently "training" two new Jane's, we have to run everything twice. And since the Banks children are in all but four scenes in the entire show, well..

Thankfully, we skipped over the big dance breaks today - we'll cover those on Wednesday - but, still, we basically ran the show twice today. We run a segment with one girl, and then go back and run it again with the other one, then continue from there. And so on and so forth.

I also caught a couple more errors in the score today too. There was one sequence where I would constantly curse to myself since I could hear I was hitting the wrong notes. Well, upon closer inspection, it turned out I was playing what was on the page, it was the page that was not correct.

The girls did so well today, that we 'voted' to let them watch the matinee tomorrow instead of rehearsing. I may end up watching the show with them. Or I may just have another day off. We shall see.

And I'm also back from supping with Mr. Kimmel, Ms. Patti and Mr. Wechter. We ended up at Ted's Montana Grill since 44th & 10th didn't open for dinner until 5:30. We all had wonderful meals at Ted's (as in Turner), and I do believe they down-sized their prices there since they first opened. I was surprised by the reasonable-ness of the food pricing.
