Good Evening!
When I headed out earlier, I really wasn't sure where I wanted to go, nor what I wanted to do. Well, I decided to take the D Train to 7th Avenue, and then walked over to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). I remembered a small blurb about a new Seurat exhibit starting there this week; in fact, it started today. For MoMA members at least. So, I went ahead and signed up, got my new membership card, and proceeded up to the sixth floor to view:
Georges Seurat: The DrawingsWhat a wonderful exhibit of some lesser-known pieces of a not-so-lesser-known artist. There were a few drawings that literally had me in awe of not only the beauty of them, but also of the technique of them. The use of "negative space", as well taking advantage of the texture of the Michallet paper, Seurat's preferred "canvas" for this drawings. Never before have I become aware of how drawings and paintings are made of up not only the pencil, crayon, paint, but also of the existing canvas.
The final room of the exhibition concentrates on some of the studies for his larger paintings. Of course, some studies for "La Grande Jatte" are included.
I also enjoyed the various placards placed throughout the exhibit that described life in Paris during Seurat's lifetime, and how the urbanization of Paris started the "fleeing to the suburbs". -Who knew that the train could stand for so much?
I will definitely head back for a second and possibly third viewing, and I may even splurge on the accompanying book - especially since Members get a discount.
