But I've heard some people (a Gypsy reference) say "an historical" instead of "a historical".

I have, too. It doesn't mean they were right to say it.

Seems to me it is commonly written that way as well.

"Commonly" is as "commonly" does.

The language continues to be beaten to death.

Seeing something in print doesn't remotely mean that it was checked by anyone who knew how to properly write it.

In fact, most "written word" today is rife with errors -- typographical, grammatical and so on.

We're in hard times for sure!

Grammar expert, when did anyways become a word?  I don't remember it being in the dictionary until recently.

"Anyways" is not a word...it's an idiomatic expression used in informal conversation.  Here at HHW.com, many of us attempt to write more conversationally, and such things are written to establish an intimacy.

From http://andromeda.rutgers.edu/~jlynch/Writing/a.html

Most of the confusion with a or an arises from acronyms and other abbreviations: some people think it's wrong to use an in front of an abbreviation like "MRI" because "an" can only go before vowels. Not so: the sound, not the letter, is what matters. Because you pronounce it "em ar eye," it's "an MRI."

One tricky case comes up from time to time: is it "a historic occasion" or "an historic occasion"? Some speakers favor the latter — more British than American speakers, but you'll find them in both places — using an on longish words (three or more syllables) beginning with h, where the first syllable isn't accented. They'd say, for instance, "a hístory textbook" (accent on the first syllable) but "an históric event." (Likewise "a hábit" but "an habítual offender," "a hýpothetical question" but "an hypóthesis.") Still, most guides prefer a before any h that's sounded: "a historic occasion," "a hysterical joke," "a habitual offender" — but "an honor" and "an hour" because those h's aren't sounded. Sometimes, when grammar people start to pick at me when I speak, I like to throw in the phrase  "more better," just for fun.

I'm anxious to hear if Craig made any interesting connections at the job fair in San Francisco.  He wants very much to return there to live.  It would be nice for us.

I never mentioned the baby shower was very nice, simple but nice.  In fact I think the simplicity of it made it less tiring for the mother to be.  Instead of a cake they served cupcakes.  I liked the red velvet ones with cream cheese frosting.  I want to find a good recipe now.

While I was at the shower, they guys (Keith, Craig & Sherlock) visited with Keith's mother.  Sherlock, with permission, jumped on the couch and put his head on Mom's lap.  She was in heaven.:)

In the evening my family had dinner at my brother's.

DR RLP - thanks for the link about Christopher Bowman.  He was always a favorite of mine, and now and then I would do a NET search to see what he was up to.

Certainly Toller Cranston took him to task in his book, but also gave him props for his skating and his colorful personal life.  The girls on the circuit were just happy to have a male skater who was interested in THEM - and Christopher was happy to oblige them all....

I love ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE - and Kenny Miller tells a funny story about his pants ripping and his climbs up the door....and he yells to the director that he's not wearing undies....and the director says....keep going, we have to get the shot!!!

William Talman was arrested a couple of times for attending marijuana parties in Wicked Hollywood, and left PERRY MASON a couple of times, but was always asked back.

Saturday we went to a high school class luncheon.  I find it interesting we weren't the only class couple.  There were two other couples that hooked up after high school.

DR Penny was there looking exceptionally beautiful, if that is possible.

Keith's mother and brother kindly, and happily, watched Sherlock so he wouldn't have to sit in the car.  We were able to linger and relax, giving us more time to visit.

That's it, short but sweet trip.  As always I was somewhat stressed not to see other family and friends.  Unfortunately that is what usually happens.

Thank you JRand.

TD, I'm still hoping to return to Pittsburgh before Craig moves.  I really expected to go in the fall.  Now he is saying he doubts he will "walk" at graduation time.  If he doesn't, I won't have an excuse to go.  I so want to go for a relaxing visit, meet you & Miss Dixie, and spend time exploring your beautiful city.

Good Evening!

Another hour at the gym, another hour of Bach and Brahms...

I'm revisiting some pieces I played while I was in high school, as well as some music I played on my graduation recital (college).  I'm amazed at the details and "theory" that I'm seeing for the first time all these years later.  Feels good.  :)

D.O. schools, on a whole, seem to be more open to older students.  I don't know why, your comments on your music are an example of the value of age and experience.

Former U.S. Nationals Figure Skating champion Christopher ("Bowman the Showman") Bowman is dead.   Read about HERE.

Could the media have found a worse photo of Christopher?
