That is indeed sad news about Art Carney. A fine actor and a true gentleman. He probably deserved a medal forall the time he worked with Gleason, who I understand was not pleasant to be around.

I just ordered GYPSY, too. Looking forward to hearing it. I still think the movie is marvelous even though Lisa Kirk's voice is quite obviously different from Rosalind Russell's for those who know what the two women sound like. The cast from top to bottom is really first-rate, and the physical production is marvelous.

I had the BIGGEST crush on Paul Wallace (Tulsa) when I saw the movie in the theater, and because he did the Broadway show as well as the movie, the movie gave him a chacne to sing "All I Need Is the Girl" without the obvious vocal problems he was experiencing on the cast album.

TCB: The candles are still erect. I assume the extra postage I had to pay was because of the weight of all those candles. It is nearly bush fire season and total fire bans will be in place so I guess I had better light them now.

MattH: Is Broken Hearts Club any good? I have stayed away from it so far, for fear it was terrble. As much as I like Terrence McNally, I didn't like the film version of Love! Valour! Compassion!.

I look on BROKEN HEARTS CLUB like a gay FRIENDS. It's not great moviemaking, but I liked it enough to buy it on DVD, and there are some interesting stories there in need of better writing.

If you didn't like LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION!, however, I would stay far, FAR away from THE BROKEN HEARTS CLUB.

Ahhh, there was a legitimate progression of thought in that post. I didn't like L!V!C!; Broken Hearts Club seemed lik a rip-off of LVC; therefore, I didn't think I would like Broken Hearts Club.

Now, I did like Love! Valour! Compassion! as a play. I just didn't care for the transfer to the screen. Maybe it was having to see Jason Alexander in the nude that did it?

I really liked LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION!, but you're not the first person I've talked to who didn't. Some didn't like the entire thing. Others found Jason Alexander too distracting and too dissimilar to Nathan Lane. Sorry you didn't like it.

I've had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Terrence. He's great!

Talking, I'm sure you mean? Sure! We spent fifteen minutes talking about THE RINK, one of my all-time favorite Broadway musicals and one both he and I think has been sinfully overlooked. He was VERY impressed that I had ever heard of it, much less seen it. He liked even more the fact that I had both the Broadway and London cast albums of the show. When I like something, I REALLY like it. (Kind of a Sally Field reference)

Speaking of Kander and Ebb (i.e. THE RINK), I read the chapter in their book last night on CHICAGO. They are under the impression that the show did not pay off in its original engagement. Well, maybe they need to notify Steven Suskin about that. He has it listed in MORE OPENING NIGHTS ON BROADWAY as a hit. And I seem to remember reading in VARIETY when it closed that it HAD been classified as a hit from that 1975-76 season. Sometimes the people closest to a show don't really know as much about what was going on with it as one would think.

Matt H. I agree with you about Broken Hearts Club. I wasn't sure how I would react to it, but like you said, it's not great movie making but it's not awful. It needs a better script. I preferred LVC on stage. Although Jason Alexander has talent, I have such trouble watching him do anything after his years on Seinfeld including the IMHO awful television remake of Bye Bye Birdie, although that wasn't all his fault. I won't go into a Seinfeld rant again, suffice it to say, I feel the series is overated and it spoiled some good performers.

Yes, that TV version of BYE BYE BIRDIE certainly had problems (I think Jason Alexander was its biggest problem), but it's so much more faithful to the stage version than the film is that I can't fault it too much. I'm glad to have a copy of it.

Jennifer , I thought everyone knew about the other Smiles. Don't tell me I knew something before everyone else!. Anyway, I also know of a couple of other Web pages that have some really cute ones but I can’t seem to get them to work here. Sigh.

I liked the first fairy best but they are all cute.

Can’t say why but I like 9–Giblet best as a name for the “baby”. As far as the Fairy goes–wouldn’t her name be Karma? Or Kar the Karma Fairy?

DR Ben - I thought GYPSY was a Rhino release as well...but that is not the case. It is on the Warner Bros label as was the soundtrack LP.

La Strada comes out next week from Criterion, so that's good.

Here is a partial quote of the review about RR's singing on the CD:

Sparklingly remastered, this soundtrack is big, brassy, and quite enjoyable. It is a good (not great) rendering of the score, made even more expansive by the terrific work of Frank Perkins' adaptation of the score for the Warner Brothers orchestra. At the end of the soundtrack selections are the outtakes of Rosalind Russell's fully orchestrated vocals to "Some People", "Small World", "You'll Never Get Away from Me", "Together", and "Everything's Coming Up Roses". Prepare yourself: she's even worse than you've heard from the rumors. Astonishingly off-key, and even off-rhythm sometimes, it is really mind-boggling to think that this is THE performance of THE role in THE feature film of the property. While these outtakes won't make your viewing of the finished film any less enjoyable, I defy you to ever watch it the same way again!

Thanks to Rhino and Warner Brothers for giving us this package of pleasure and pain.
