When I came back in, I turned on the home theater only to find that the cable company had finally updated their interface on the cable box. Hoo boy, a learning curve to get things back where I had them for sure. Got the settings for most things back where I had them. Will deal with others as I get more accustomed to the way things look and work.

I'm sure I'll grow into the new look, but right now, I think we regressed in sophistication.

TCM had a very nice interview on their ROLE MODEL series last night. Alec Baldwin interviewed a rather frail Gene Wilder. It was very well-done.

Next, I watched THE GOLDEN COMPASS. It's another adventure in a fantasy world similar to ours but with some different a very unusual quirks.

It was entertaining, but I can see why it wasn't a hit in America. (It was a smash hit internationally.) Unlike LORD OF THE RINGS or the HARRY POTTER films, the main character just isn't very ingratiating. She actually reminded me of the feisty and a little irritating Mytil that Shirley Temple played in THE BLUE BIRD. Oh, you eventually begin rooting for her, but it took a LONG time into the film for me to care what was happening to her.

Big cast of famous names, some of whom play real people and some of whom only voice various animals and demons. I was very surprised how little Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman were in the film. They're really supporting characters in this movie.

And I was reading in VARIETY the other day that Warners/New Line is now left to puzzle out whether they want to invest in the filming of the remaining books in the series. Though the film will make a little money once the video side kicks in, I suspect they were hoping for something along the lines of POTTER or at least NARNIA.

It'll be interesting to see what they decide to do.

I began listening to the director commentary. Very good thus far.

BTW, I didn't mention it above, but the disc comes with both a Dolby Digital 5.1 EX and a DTS 5.1 ES soundtrack option. I sampled some of both. DD seemed to have a little more volume in the surrounds, and the DTS seemed to emphasize the low frequency effects (subwoofer) more. Both were excellent surround tracks.

And I was shocked/stunned/surprised and DEE-lighted to discover last night that ComCast had added some "new" HD channels to my HD band....TLCHD, Sci-FiHD, APHD, FOODHD, and AMCHD.

Ya and Hoo.

One of its problems in the US was the rather relentless campaign waged against the film by the religious right. They conceded that the film, itself, was not pointedly anti-Christian, but they had fears that kids enjoying the films would then turn to the books and be exposed to Philip Pullman's agressively atheistic views.

Pastors railing against an R-Rated flick may actually help its box office, but when a teen-age audience themed film gets pulpit-bashed its box office probably suffers. The Potter books popularity gave the films some innocualtion against similar attacks.

Watch out for FOODHD - they have different programmimg than FOODTV (same folks, different shows).

Do you get a PBS HD channel?

I had USAHD when I first subscribed.

I get KQED as my PBS HD channel.
