My daily pedantic rant:
RULE: Never round off calculations until the final result is obtained!
The big "Political Pundit" issue on the PA Primary was whether or not Hilary could core a double digit victory.
The news cast were trumpeting her success based on the 55% to 45% (10%=double digits) results-
the screen showed:
Clinton - 1,258,245 votes (55%)
Obama - 1,042,297 votes (45%)
And since 55-45=10 (double digits), Clinton WON the PA race!
Well, if you do the math correctly, you have
1,258,245 plus 1,042,297 equals 2,300,542 votes;
Clinton votes as a percentage of the total = 54.6934% (prematurely rounded to 55%)
Obama votes as a percentage of the total =45.3066% (prematurely rounded to 45%)
The Clinton percentage edge is therefore 9.3868% - which is properly rounded to 9%
So, in fact, using the double-digit standard, Clinton LOST the PA race!
LESSON: Premature rounding creates cumulative error that can dramatically affect the outcome of your calculations!
Here endeth the lesson.
