ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAMER BO DIDDLEY DIES AT 79
Monday , June 02, 2008

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.  —
Bo Diddley, a founding father of rock 'n' roll whose distinctive "shave and a haircut, two bits" rhythm and innovative guitar effects inspired legions of other musicians, died Monday after months of ill health. He was 79.

Diddley died of heart failure at his home in Archer, Fla., spokeswoman Susan Clary said. He had suffered a heart attack in August, three months after suffering a stroke while touring in Iowa. Doctors said the stroke affected his ability to speak, and he had returned to Florida to continue rehabilitation.

The legendary singer and performer, known for his homemade square guitar, dark glasses and black hat, was an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, had a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, and received a lifetime achievement award in 1999 at the Grammy Awards. In recent years he also played for the elder President Bush and President Clinton.

Diddley appreciated the honors he received, "but it didn't put no figures in my checkbook."

"If you ain't got no money, ain't nobody calls you honey," he quipped.

Wasn't the full name of the restaurant at one time, "Generous George's Flying Pizza Palace"?  Maybe it still is.  In any case, yes, I know of him/it.   ;)

If it was, it was before my time. I'm not a pizza lover, but Generous George's is a lot of FUN!

DR Jeanne - Her characters are so well-drawn.  Also, I have a firm belief that certain writers just "sing" to a reader and GG is one of them for me.  It's not something I can describe or define, but I know when it happens.  My book group was just talking about this phenomenon at our Doris Lessing discussion - she didn't "sing" to any of us.

Thanks, Ginny. I shall give her a try. Interesting that you mention Doris Lessing. I read a lot of Doris Lessing in my 20's. I wasn't thinking those days of whether an author "sang" to me or not; I thought of Doris Lessing as interesting, with real substance, but not an easy read. I would say that Laurie King sings to me; I love her writing.

Any particular Gail Godwin you'd suggest as a first read?

GENEROUS GEORGE'S POSITIVE PIZZA & PASTA PLACE

der Brucer

that's it. Maybe there were flying pizzas on the night Jose ate there. At Generous George's I wouldn't be too surprised!

The ones I've read multiple times are A Mother and Two Daughters and Father Melancholy's Daughter.  Many people like A Southern Family for the rich characterizations - I had trouble getting into it the first time I tried, but ended up loving it.  For my drive to Cleveland this week, I just checked out the audio version of Queen of the Underworld, read by Carrington MacDuffie.
