A Very Happy Birthday to Mark Bakalor! I'm at work now, but I'm leaving to go to my sister's to help put up a ceiling fan. I've never put up a ceiling fan before, only just swapped out light fixtures. Hopefully, it'll all work.

I watched two episodes of MURDER SHE WROTE this afternoon. The first one I have seen many times over the years; don't know exactly why I have seen this one so much and others from the same season never at all.

Anyway, Jessica is at Universal in Hollywood because they're going to film one of her books. While she's there she tours the studio where, of course, she ends up at the Bates Motel and house where a murder is committed.

Among the guest stars are Ron Leibman, Paula Prentiss, Henry Gibson, and Stuart Whitman.

The other MURDER SHE WROTE found Jessica in Monte Carlo where her old friend owns a hotel there which is on the verge of bankruptcy. Among the guest stars were Dina Merrill, David Birney, Bo Hopkins, and Ian Ogilvy.

I have never had the pleasure of visiting Eye-taly, so I would have to say that the most memorable Eye-talian meal I have ever had was the first time I made my own lasagna. As with most of my favorite recipes I got dared into making it.

I was hosting my first Oscar party, and my friends asked what I was serving, and I said lasagna (figuring I would buy one of those big frozen Eye-talian classics). Well, they laughed and said that I didn't know how to make lasagna, and I responded indignantly that I most certainly did. So, after sutdying several different cookbooks, I went shopping for all the ingredients (expensive!), cooked the sauce all day on Saturday, put it together Sunday afternoon, and served it just in time for the start of the Oscars on Monday evening.

It was one of my proudest moments (kind of like Woody making Brussel sprouts edible). Everybody fell over themselves grabbing for seconds and thirds.

I used to make it a lot, but it is still not cheap to make, and living alone there isn't much call for a ten pound lasagna.

Tonight I'll be watching (with some reluctance) THE RUINS hoping that it won't be too ghastly gory for me to stomach.

I'm going to venture down the 2 steps into our family room, with Richard's supervision, to partake in family pizza/movie night. We have a family tradition of watching Independence Day on, well, Independence Day, but Rob will be in Michigan with his girlfriend for the holiday. We're going to observe our tradition tonight.

Tip for the day: If you're staying in a hotel and Jessica Fletcher checks in, switch to another hotel. The odds are not that good of surviving that stay.

Ate some lunch and am watching the last of the Perry Masons. I had no idea the last season was in color (were any others?) - Perry Mason and color is just plain weird. Mr. Burr said in an interview that he wished they'd stopped after seven seasons - he's clearly unhappy with the final two seasons and this episode from 1966, a variation on Oliver Twist shows why - it's awful, and it clearly has no place on a best of compilation. By the time of this episode, Ray Collins had passed on - he was really missed.

George, about noon the doorbell rang. At first, when I opened the door, I didn't see anyone there, but then I noticed Tony on the floor, next to the door. Of course, I took him inside, and tonight I plan to totally enjoy him. Thanks again, George!
