Have just a bit of writing to do and then I'll head downstairs to bed.

Good night!

Good Evening!

My audition session went very well this morning.  And it also went very fast.  I started at 11:00, and I done at 11:50.   -And I was still on the clock until 2:00!  :)

After the auditions, I did not head to a museum, nor to a movie.  Instead, I came back to my apartment... Then proceeded to nap off and on and on and off for most of the afternoon.  Once I was fully awake, I headed into Astoria to meet a friend of mine who just recently moved down to NYC from Boston.  We had a very good meal at some hole-in-the-wall Greek place, and we had a great time catching on things.  And now...

DR JMK - So... Is your former son going on another trip to Hawaii to swim with the sharks again anytime soon?

Laura and George, you're both missing the point.

The anchovy is not there as a major player in the dressing.  If you didn't know it was there, you would never think "Aha, there's anchovy in this dressing!"  It is a background player, something that makes everything else taste great.

This could be an example of umami, that ineffable taste that has been getting all kinds of attention lately in the cooking world.  It's something found in soy sauce, mushrooms, tomatoes, Parmesan cheese, and a lot of other odd places.  It gives food a feeling of being something "more", of having a fullness and yumminess.  And it's absolutely terrible when over-used, or tasted on it's own, because the main chemical component is MSG.

But it works in small amounts, as something in the background.

Jose might have something more to say about this.

Not really.  ;)

Some people just don't like olives and/or anchovies on their own.

As for myself, I like olives, and tend to go a bit crazy when I come across an "olive bar" at a grocery store.  *And I have to say, the olive selection at Zabar's is one of the best in NYC.  -I also like those marinated garlic cloves.

As for anchovies, I go through phases with them.  I do prefer the salt-cured ones - rinsed thoroughly, of course - but sometimes even the fresh ones taste too "fishy" to me.  On a related note, I LOVED the marides skordalia appetizer at my favorite Greek restaurant in Richmond.  Basically, it was a plate piled high with deep-fried smelts served with a potent garlic sauce/paste.  Yum!

And now I'm afraid I'm going to have to Wussburger.  I guess my "paid vacation" has caught up with me.  Hopefully, I'll be back to normal - or some semblance thereof - tomorrow.

Goodnight.

We learned our BIG finally dance....to of course "Singin' In the Rain" - and I think that since we are all twirling our umbrellas, and opening and closing them and doing various other things - SOMEONE is going to lose an eye...or something.

It isn't too complicated....I picked it up after a couple of times through, but Shelly, Jim, and I are up on a platform in the back while the rest of the cast is onstage down front.  We just decided to do some of our own choreography mixed in with Cousin Lita's.  She was having such a hard time with the people down front, she didn't notice what we were doing....I am not sure how long that will last.

I always liked Olivia Newton-John's version of Don't Cry For Me Argentina.  It was the B side of one of her hits on the old yellow and pink UNI label....first time I had heard it all the way through, and I still like that version very much.

I've considered inviting him over for cheeseburgers on the floor.

ROTFL!  I watched "America's Got Talent" tonight.   I wanted to  be blown away by that last act.  She was REALLY good, but I  wasn't blown away.  I guess you had to be there and witness the horrors they witnessed to be able to overdo the praise for that REALLY good lady singer...but not  phenomenal, IMO.  There have been better singers, thus far, who will more than give her a run for the prize.

"Big Brother 10" was a gimme tonight...i.e., gimmeabreak, I already know how it's all going to end since everything in tonight's show happened over the weekend.  Still...it's amazing to see the hamsters in action.  Libra, Renny and Jerry have really overstayed their welcome, I think.  And Jessie...what a hoot/trip this guy is.  Michelle is totally leading him around by his nose.

Anchovies -- No, no.  If you use them, don't tell me "...'cause I don't want to know!

Olives -- any kind, any where.  Garlic-stuffed, jalapeno-stuffed, pimento-stuffed, or any other kind of stuffing-stuffed (and if it's anchovy-stuffed, I don't want to know).

If I was meant to eat and love anchovies, Jerry Herman would have included them in this lyric:

Pâté de foie gras,
Thursday's gardenias, ribbons and orange rinds.
A volume of Chaucer bound in Marocco,
Lilies and coffee grinds.
The pit of a peach, the stem of a cherry floating in pink champagne.
There was a time when garbage was a pleasure,
When you found the sound of Good and Plenty gurgling in your drain.
The world was all ginger and lime.
The world was the rustle of silk, purple and puce, crystal and lace,
Fresh orange juice, ginger and lime.

The shell of a clam, the claw of a lobster.
Hairpins and choc'late mousse.
A page of Othello, gilt at the edges.
Daisies and Charlotte Russe.
A rose and a fan, a piece of pimento floating in turquoise ink.
There was a time when garbage was a pleasure,
When you found the joy of gracious living underneath your sink.
The world was all ginger and lime.
The world was the rustle of silk, purple and puce, crystal and lace,
Fresh orange juice, ginger and lime.

Fa la la la.
Garbage was a pleasure.
Fa la la la.
Garbage, fa la la.
Garbage, fa la la.
Garbage, fa la la!
