I have the choice tomorrow of watching NIXON (all day since it's 3 1/2 hours long and has a commentary which will make that 7 hours with the movie alone)

or

beginning a Cartoon Network/Comedy Central cartoon show I can't even remember the name of. It's two discs worth of half hour episodes. I might just do it and save NIXON for maybe Tuesday. I'll see how I feel tomorrow.

And now I have started my Bollywood movie of the weekend, and it is a goodie...a nice Punjabi movie (so it is really a Punjabwood, rather then Bollywood film) from 2006 called WAGAH.

Plot is about a young Indian war widow (her husband was killed on their wedding night) who helps a young Pakistani women search for her husband who is being held as a prisoner of war in India.

Being as it is a Punjabi movie there are lots of guys in turbans.

You know, to me it doesn't seem so much that it should matter where as show originates from...a book, TV show, movie or something written specifically for stage...what matters is that it is entertaining and meaningful to the audience who pays to go and see it.

I also never do understand the criticism of movies based on TV shows or that are remakes....all that matters is if it is a good, enjoyable movie...at least to me.

Sounds like you had fun tonight at the show, and afterwards, DR Jose! Again it makes me miss NYC.

And NYC misses you too, DR MBarnum.  -Well, at least the Indian shops down in the East Village and out in Queens.  ;)

Following a day of laundry, doing some house cleaning and grocery shopping, I had a very enjoyable evening watching the Olympics.

I'm guessing that if I discuss any live Olympic results that i should put spoiler space (since NBC does not seem to show anything live).

So if i'm just discussing in general i won't put space. But if i'm discussing a result (that probably won't have aired in the US) i will.

I found out something interesting. CBC is showing all their events live on the internet (there are numerous channels but the events can only be watched live).

I'm curious if this works in the US.

http://www.cbc.ca/olympics/

(the channels are on the right side for the events on at the time).

I got a "Sorry, this video is not available in your area" message on the screen for 20 seconds, and then it stopped. :-\

Wow! It's much later than usual for me. I'm heading down now for some sleep.

BTW, there's a nice, soft, lovely rain falling outside my office window. Of course, I have the house opened up and am enjoying the fresh air.

Good night!

Has anyone else read the hysterical story about that lady who had her dog cloned and how she turns out to be a nutcase who stalked a Mormon missionary and made him her sex slave decades ago?  I love stories where Mormon missionaries are made into sex slaves.

Is that Betsey's story?

I'm enjoying watching the Olympics. I know it's delayed, but as long as I don't know what the results are, it's fun to watch.

Much of what you watched tonight was live - remember we (on the East Coats) are 12 hours away from China, so tonight we were watching Saturday morning's events.

I recall some ground beef I had when I was at a  London pub (and no euphemisms, really!).  But that's a whole different kind of recollection - it was just smelly and gross.

Jose,

I ain't getting a dough from that FLY opera.  Let's see, Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet and The Wedding Singer, hmmm? Classic drama; Adam Sandler comedy...How does that stack up?  It used to be Broadway plays were adapted into movies, not the other way around.

The thing about The Fly opera is, how can they get away with NO credit?  Unless it's because this time they don't have to worry about the pesky WGA defending the rights of the original screenwriter.

I wasn't comparing "Romeo & Juliet" and "The Wedding Singer"... Trust me on that one.  However, there are some wonderful films out there that probably would make wonderful musicals if the proper writers and production team were in place.  Dramas and comedies.

And as for "The Fly" - regardless of whether you're getting any dough or not - it was an adaptation of a film.  As was the recent Jake Heggie opera, "Dead Man Walking" - which was inspired and adapted from a book/memoir and its film adaptation.

A good story is a good story.  Source material is source material.  Now as to whether or not that good story remains well-told and well-sung, well... that's the challenge.

Would you also declare a ban on all further Shakespearean adaptations and re-imaginings?  -As other plays, musicals, movies, tv shows... ?

There is no separation of rights here is the problem.  It is not looked at as an original screenplay, but as a remake of the old 58' film. Therefore I have no subsidiary rights here.  It  does seem to me it should say something along the lines of based on the screenplays by David Cronenberg & Charles Edward Pogue and by James Clavell and the original short story by whatever his name was.

If they didn't lift specific dialog or unique situations from the film, wouldn't the story credit go to George Langelaan who wrote the original Playboy story?

*Now the one "adaptation" that does puzzle me are the novelizations of movies.  I mean, did we really need the story of "Dreamgirls" in paperback?  ;)

Actually, most of Shakespeare's plots were not original; so, who should get credit for West Side Story?
