Hi all,

Today have been a very long and tiring day for me.   I won’t go into details.  Just wanted to touch base.

I did read notes and have something to say but don’t know how to say it without just coming out and saying it.  Did that make sense?  Anyway, about the What If DVD.  I would love to see it but would like to take myself out of the running for one.  Not because I don’t want it, I do very much, but because you have already given me a very great gift this year, BK, and I don’t feel it would be right to have another.

If it wasn’t for the gift of this board, I would never have met the wonderful, warm, cyber “family” I now have.

I hope that didn’t sound to mushy.  It was true, every word of it but I hope it wasn’t mushy.

I will read the posts  tomorrow.  Right now I am very tired and want to hit the hay or hey early.    :)

I owe some e-mail and or PM's -- forgive me but I will answer them tomorrow.

Have a good evening all!

Good Evening!

Back from dinner.  The company - my friend, Mark - was good.  The food was just OK.  It might have been better than OK, but I just really wasn't that hungry.  I was more or less eating just to eat, kind of going through the motions.  But it was my first real food of the day, so...  -Btw, Chicken Pot Pie.

After dinner I decided to continue my quest for a tray table.  -I need a small "desk" for my room at my parents' house.  So, my first stop was K-Mart.  They only had the type with where the tray rests on top of the leg assembly, and since I'll be using it for my laptop, that was not an ideal solution.  -But I did end up buying a small 3-foot, pre-lighted artificial tree - yes, from the Martha Stewart collection.  And it was only $19.00!  Not bad.  -However, I had forgotten just how "depressing" this particular K-Mart is: over-crowded aisles and shelves, insufficient lighting, slow cash register clerks, etc.  But, hey, at least I got a Christmas tree, so...

Then it was up to Ben Franklin.  Well, they didn't have any tray tables of lapdesks - they don't carry them anymore.  Then it was across the parking lot to Staples.  Lots of chairs there, but no tables.

Finally, on a whim I headed over to Lowe's.  Bingo!  I got one of those heavy-duty plastic deals with the adjustable metal legs.  -In fact, I'm using it now.  Sort of a test drive, I guess.  It seems to be serving it's purpose purposely.

Unfortunately, while I was at Ben Franklin, I happened to run into someone I just do not want to deal with anymore, professionally speaking.  I was polite, and said Hi and shook hands, but what I really wanted to do was... grrr...  Ah, well....

I'm watching "Cinderella" on PBS right now.... "Ten minutes ago..."

My friend Betty, except for the large section of her nose where she skinned it, looked fabulous and we had a great time at the Ned Rorem event.   She had a day crammed with incident from breakfast with friends to some music appraisal and other errands.

Ned is now in his 81st year, and we saw the premiere of a 90-minute documentary on his life, which was quite moving and wonderful.  The section on the death of his James Holmes, his partner for 25 years,  from AIDS at the age of 58 (he was around 15 years younger than Ned) was quite moving, and for all you single older gentlemen who might be looking for affection, take heart:  Ned's current boyfriend is 37 years old.

There was some wonderful music, including "Early in the Morning," DR Jose, some lovely chamber pieces, scenes from his opera "Miss Julie," and his short operas based on the fables of La Fontaine, translated by Marianne Moore.  After the film, there were questions with Mr Rorem and the film makers.  Betty went backstage to see Ned, and I elected to come home.

Vibes for Jose's dad. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm glad he's doing better and can get back to his karaoke machine. Does he take requests? If so, my dad would like for him to do "King of the Road."

Thank you... Are you sure your dad didn't already make the request?  I heard my dad singing, "King of the Road" Saturday night.

;)

*I finally realized he was going through the song listing and marking down his favorites.  Boy, does have a lot of favorites!

Went out for dinner to be among people -- writing is very solitary - except for the people on the paper -- but when you stop, you realize they aren't really there. Or if you don't - THEN - as dear bk suggested - perhaps it's time for the straight jacket. Anyway, the people at CPK were real, but the food wasn't. Well, it was real, but I didn't like what I ordered.
Now I'm back. going to get back in my writing clothes and attempt a bit more. I used to be much better at night writing. Not these days. Early morning is great, though.

Watched the documentaries on the DIAL M FOR MURDER DVD. That was all I had time for tonight. Tomorrow, I'll probably try SPIDER-MAN 2.

DR Jose mentioning watching CINDERELLA reminded me that on Sunday, when I had no more need to listen to the NUNCRACKERS cast album for practice or a quick run through/warm up in the car on the way to the theater, I packed two CDs. One was the Julie Andrews version of CINDERELLA which I hadn't listened to in awhile. (I was amazed how very, very close it is to the actual show now that I saw the show such a short time ago.)

The other was the Rosalind Russell/WONDERFUL TOWN which is such great fun. Nope, her vocals can't hold a candle to Donna Murphy's. I much prefer the original version.

My favorite Christmas foods also happens to be one of my all-time favorite foods the rest of the year-- MY butter sugar cookies with buttercream frosting.  I try to limit mking them on holidays only-- otherwise I'd be in a hypoglycemic coma-- in haven't but very large and  probably habe gout and diabetes and all that.  BUT it is my my favorite.  Enve as much as I like chocolate, I like these cookies better.

Bruce, I wish I had a suggestion for an equitable way of  passing out your Christmas DVD's, but I have found tha life is not always equitable, so do what feels right to you.

DR Jose mentioning watching CINDERELLA.... <SNIP>

Speaking of CINDERELLA, the DVD is going to be released tomorrow, but I was at the local Fred Meyer on Saturday and they had the DVD on their shelves!!  I didn't remember when it was supposed to be released so I didn't think about it, but then I was on amazon.com earlier today and saw it on the front page so I clicked on the link and saw that it's "Not Yet Released" -- officially, anyway.  So I went to Fred Meyer tonight and it was still there and I bought it!  And it was $3 cheaper than amazon.com! ;D

Here's the cover with the lovely Julie:

Fortunately, I didn't put this on any of my Christmas lists so I can pick it up and enjoy it tomorrow (I gave up watching it when it was broadcast on my local PBS channel last week--too many pledge breaks.)

Also being released tomorrow, the Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary Edition.  It's a jolly holiday with Julie!

Good Evening again!

I took a little e-break, and decided to go ahead and take a nice hot shower.  Just what I needed.  I woke up tired, and I've more or less felt tired all day.  Plus, my stomach was feeling a little upset - possibly some heartburn from the chicken pot pie.  -I've also been suspecting that I've been dealing with some acid reflux again, so... ugh.  However, I have been wanting to get back to something resembling a healthy diet lately - I want to be nice and svelte for my off-Broadway debut in March! - so, maybe this is just my body's way of telling me to stop eating so much junk right now.

And speaking of junk... The candy machine at the theatre had the new Hershey's "Take Five" bar - five layers: pretzels, caramel, peanuts, peanut butter and chocolate.  Pretty tasty!

Watched a bit of BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES again. The moment when Yul Brynner as the King puts his hand on Patricia Morrison's waist is SO sexy and electrifying.

I'm going to try an early bedtime tonight so that I can get up reallly early tomorrow.

For those interested DRs, here's a link to the Washington Post's "Backstage" column today/tomorrow.  It's a brief interview and story with Mr. Laurents.

...And here's an excerpt from Robert Wolke's Food Science column...

Warning... Well, you've been warned ;)

Among the ingredients on some candy my son received at Halloween was "shellac." Why would shellac ever be found in anything we eat? Is shellac edible?

Not in large quantities, no.

Shellac is a transparent coating made by dissolving lac in alcohol. Lac is a resinous secretion of the lac beetle, an insect that lives in tropical trees, especially in India. Believe it or not, lac is used as a coating or glaze on candies such as Reese's Pieces because it provides a high gloss in thin coatings. It was used briefly to coat the centers of peanut butter M&Ms.

Shellac is approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a food-safe coating when the lac is dissolved in pure ethanol (ethyl alcohol.) Vegans who eschew all animal-derived foods including honey may not be aware that shellac is an animal (insect) product.

I cannot get motivated to watch a motion picture on DVD.  I already fell asleep trying.  I have watched some supplements, though - all the extras on the new Criterion M, and the handful of extras on Testament.  I also started to watch a movie I TIVOd called The Day they Robbed the Bank of England, starring Aldo Ray and a VERY young Peter O'Toole pre-Lawrence.

Siri you changed your name.

We finally watched the 2nd episode of HOUSE, having missed the first one.  We enjoyed it so much we followed it with the 3rd episode.  The next night we watched the 4th episode.  Now we shall have to wait until tomorrow night for the next one.
