Der Brucer, I know you have done a lot of work with animals...

I dont know if you saw the question I posted the other day about helping a dog deal with grief. Any ideas?  My father's dog  is VERY attached to him and I fear she will have a difficult time after my father passes on. Any ideas to help ease her pain?

Sadly, ND is one of the worst paying states in the US... Not far behind certain southern states

ND is 38th in household income ($41.030)

BUT: ND had fewer people below the poverty level than most states.

My father's dog  is VERY attached to him and I fear she will have a difficult time after my father passes on. Any ideas to help ease her pain?

This may help:

Pet Care

It is unlikely that pets actually grieve, since it is doubtful that dogs and cats have a concept of death. However, in the absence of a person or other animal to which the dog or cat had a strong attachment, there are stages of behavioural changes that are similar to what we know as grief.
It is more appropriate to call grieving a prolonged state of separation anxiety.

What are the signs of grief?

The first stage is called activation, when the dog barks and continually patrols the property as if looking for the absent person or animal, and lasts for a few days. This is followed by depression with reduced activity, and loss of appetite. This period may last for several weeks. Eventually, periods of normal behaviour are seen between times of depression, until behaviour finally returns to normal.

Is there any treatment for a grieving pet?

Anti-anxiety drugs will help in the stages of separation anxiety (or grieving), especially if they are affecting the health of the dog and/or the owner. Show the cat or dog lots of love and attention, giving favourite foods, and engaging in pleasurable activities. Provide the animal with a den a small, dark, quiet and comfortable area that has the features of a nest, and provide dogs with lots of off-leash exercise. With time, the stages will pass, and your pet will return to normal behaviour.

Question:

What are your favorite Wacky seasonal songs?

Quote
A Christmas Carol

One very familiar type of song is the Christmas carol. Although it is perhaps a bit out of season at this time. However, I'm informed by my "disk jockey" friends - of whom I have none, that in order to get a song popular by Christmas time, you have to start plugging it well in advance. So here goes. It has always seemed to me after all. That Christmas, with its spirit of giving, offers us all a wonderful opportunity each year to reflect on what we all most sincerely and deeply believe in. I refer of course, to money. And yet none of the Christmas carols that you hear on the radio or in the street, even attempt to capture the true spirit of Christmas as we celebrate it in the United States. That is to say the commercial spirit. So I should like to offer the following Christmas carol for next year, as being perhaps a bit more appropriate.

Christmas time is here, by golly,
Disapproval would be folly,
Deck the halls with hunks of holly,
Fill the cup and don't say "when."
Kill the turkeys, ducks and chickens,
Mix the punch, drag out the Dickens,
Even though the prospect sickens,
Brother, here we go again.

On Christmas Day you can't get sore,
Your fellow man you must adore,
There's time to rob him all the more
The other three hundred and sixty-four.

Relations, sparing no expense'll
Send some useless old utensil,
Or a matching pen and pencil.
"Just the thing I need! How nice!"
It doesn't matter how sincere it
Is, nor how heartfelt the spirit,
Sentiment will not endear it,
What's important is the price.

Hark the Herald Tribune sings,
Advertising wondrous things.
God rest ye merry, merchants,
May you make the Yuletide pay.
Angels we have heard on high
Tell us to go out and buy!

So let the raucous sleigh bells jingle,
Hail our dear old friend Kris Kringle,
Driving his reindeer across the sky.
Don't stand underneath when they fly by.

Actually I did rather well myself, this last Christmas. The nicest present I received was a gift certificate "good at any hospital for a lobotomy". Rather thoughtful.

Here are the lyrics for my wacky christmas song...

Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

She'd been drinkin' too much egg nog,
And we'd begged her not to go.
But she'd left her medication,
So she stumbled out the door into the snow.

When they found her Christmas mornin',
At the scene of the attack.
There were hoof prints on her forehead,
And incriminatin' Claus marks on her back.

Grandma go run over by a reindeer,
Walkin' home from our house Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Now were all so proud of Grandpa,
He's been takin' this so well.
See him in there watchin' football,
Drinkin' beer and playin' cards with cousin Belle.

It's not Christmas without Grandma.
All the family's dressed in black.
And we just can't help but wonder:
Should we open up her gifts or send them back?

Grandma got run over by a reindeer,
Walkin' home from our house Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Now the goose is on the table
And the pudding made of pig.
And a blue and silver candle,
That would just have matched the hair in Grandma's wig.

I've warned all my friends and neighbours.
Better watch out for yourselves."
They should never give a license,
To a man who drives a sleigh and plays with elves.

Grandma got run over by a reindeer,
Walkin' home from our house, Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Not really a question but....

I finally watch the Young Love Pilot the unedited version and then the edited version with the Doris Day segments. It was interesting to see what they edited out. Sometimes characters within scenes themselves.

But when the Meredith Baxter character leaves the Michael Burns character after a fight she goes for a long walk. In the Doris Day show version she must have gone for a very, very long walk. She starts out in LA going down a street in Westwood (at one point) and ends up in San Francisco where Doris Day lived!

The indentifiable landmars are the Fox Westwood Village where the marquee has Love Story on it, Another cinema has Where's Poppa and another theater or cinema

Good morning, all!  I'm working on the Nun show today: first band rehearsal tomorrow at 1 PM.

DR MattH, that wasn't Glenn Headly as the evil stepmother; it was Theresa Russell.  The program also featured Jush Hamilton who played Eddy's gay son Serge in the AB FAB New York Special, with Danny Burstein as his boyfriend.  At the beginning, with Beth Fowler looking concerned over her expensive purse, I thought we were heading into a story about embezzlement.  At least until she ran out of the church in flames!  I also watched the LAW & ORDER: SVU episode with Lou Diamond Phillips as one very screwed-up human being.

I have no other news to report.  The TOD got me thinking about popular songs based on serious music, and after I realized that "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" was not based on Chopin ("I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" is), and I had nothing more to say.  Au revoir!

And the word of the day is: FRIABLE!
Unlike the radioactive spider bite that turned Peter Parker into Spiderman, or the chemical spill that transformed Barry Allen into the Flash, the LAB FIRE that trapped Horatio Quimby merely made his body extremely FRIABLE.  Oh, well, that's the way the cookie crumbles.
