I had some time before KING KONG came on, so I cued up THE NEXT BEST THING to watch tomorrow. I haven't seen it in several years, but I happened on it playing on one of the Showtime channels and figured it was time to revisit it. I wish they could have found an ACTRESS to play the leading female part instead of the godawful Madonna who is just a cipher in the part. Nevertheless, it has some excellent actors in the movie, and there are parts of it I actually like.

I also had time to watch 30 ROCK from last Thursday. Not up to par compared to some of the recent excellent episodes, but there were a few droll moments.

Isabella Rossallini and Paul Reubens were the principal guest stars.

And Three Viewings by Jeffrey Hatcher.

Three one act monologues that take place in a funeral home - it is terrific!!

Good answer, DR JRand56!  I first saw it at the National Association of Community Theatre's Play Festival in Conn. several years ago,  and it is terrific.  The guy was good, but the two women were outstanding (parts to die for).  It should have won, but politics must have been involved cause the theatre that got first was not near as strong as Das Bleu ( I think that was the theatre's name -- they were from Ft. Collins, CO).

I then spent the next three hours with Peter Jackson's KING KONG.

Yes, it was a mammoth undertaking, and the movie will undoubtedly be the last word in KONG lore. But despite moving work from Naomi Watts and a very likable Jack Black, the whole thing just suffered from overkill for me.

Each of the three acts was masterfully done, really couldn't have been better, but it certainly could have been shorter and not sacrificed any of the underlying poignancy of the tale. The Skull Island section was particularly overloaded with events, special effects, and creatures, creatures, creatures. I finally just got bored with all the excess. Way too much of a good thing.

And then there were nitpicky things that bothered me: an obvious winter setting in NYC for the third act (Kong and Ann even have an idyllic moment on an icy pond), but where was the frosty breath for all the participants? And on top of the Empire State Building, wouldn't it have been rather cold for Ann in a sleeveless silk gown and how lucky she was to dodge all those bullets and flying glass around her in the observation tower and emerge without a scratch.

I don't know, really. The movie just wasn't made for me.

...sorry, guess that was a bit lame, but hey, it's late and my brain is fried (and I'll be, if that isn't today's topic headline -- will it fits, so I don't care if I'm a copy cat and can't be original)...

I will say in high definition, the movie did look spectacular. All that computer generated imagery was sharp and clear as could be. Very, very impressive to look at. The merging of the real people and the CGI dinosaurs, however, in that lengthy stampede sequence was clearly not in the same time and place. In sequences like that, high def gives the game away.

I checked the schedule, and ROME and EXTRAS are new episodes tomorrow night, so I will have something new to watch while the Super Bowl is underway. I still should be able to put in the 1925 BEN-HUR and get it watched before ROME starts at 9.

After watching the wonderful (IMHO) "The Last Picture Show" it went back to the Soundtrack (10 meagre tracks) and added 9 more tracks that were used in the film.

I've had two types of music playing this afternoon - Country and Western.

I've been having a good deal of fun over the last ninety minutes, which I'll talk about in the notes.

Will now, finally, watch a motion picture on DVD.

Well, an amazing thing happened at the funeral---I had fun!

For one thing, I realized that when you go to the funeral of a 3rd generation Mariettan who was 91, even though you feel old being over 50, suddenly you are the youngest person in the room!

I picked up the program for the funeral and recognized the name of the reverend who was officiating. It was the same as my very favorite teacher in college. He was the first adult I remember meeting who I developed enormous respect for---he was a real mentor and my music theory teacher The rest of the faculty thought he was a bit too eccentric, but I felt an immediate kinship with him. He also introduced me to a composer who needed a copyist; this composer became one of my dearest friends.

This professor has now moved to Marietta and has been here for 4 or 5 years, right on the other side of the square from me. He used to be a brilliant jazz pianist but mostly plays church music now. He looked fantastic (must be around 70 by now) and seems very happy. I asked him how he ended up leaving the university and coming to Marietta, and he said that it was a "2 six-pack story", so I gave him my card and Greg and I hope that he will call us sometime so we can hear the story.

When I was visiting my best friend a few weeks ago in Athens, where we went to school, I happened to ask her about him and she said she thought he had left teaching and gone into the ministry. Who knew?

While the Rev and I were talking about my composer friend, he was leaving  his annual birthday greeting on my machine. He will be astounded when I tell him about this!

This alone made it a wonderful birthday!
