Any recommendations for a cheapish hotel around Union Square? I think instead of Times Square we might try to stay near the Quad theatre in the village.

He was good, but hardly got to talk about CURTAINS at all. Made me miss Johnny Carson, and reminded me why I don't watch Conan.

Good Morning!

-With the theatre conference last week, and my normally non-standard, non-regular sleeping schedule, I really don't think I'm "feeling" DST this year. However, I usually seem to feel it more in the fall since it always seems to seem "so early" for a couple of days.

In any case, I'm up. My oatmeal has been consumed, and I'm sipping another cup of Throat Coat Tea. -My throat and sinuses, etc. feel almost back to normal this morning. (Whew!) -And now that I think of it, with all the A/C in the hotel in Atlanta, it had to be one of the driest hotels I've ever stayed in. I tended to wake up every morning quite parched.

As for a hotel around Union Square... The only one that comes right to mind is the W, which is most definitely not cheap. There are some smaller ones a few blocks over in Chelsea. I've had some friends who've stayed at the Chelsea Pines, and they liked it, and said the rates weren't too bad. With the Spring Break and spring tourist season about to kick in, I'd probably just check out Frommer's, and start going down the list of hotels and seeing what's available.

There are not many hotels around Union Square. There is the W on 17th Street and Park Avenue South but it ain't cheap.

There are some B&Bs in the neighborhood but they are not low-priced either.

As for the Topic of the Day...

For some reason, I'm thinking my father had bought a Beta and a VHS - or maybe someone gave us one or the other. -I just seemed to recall coming across some Beta tapes in storage once. However, VHS ended up being the main format for our household. And the second VCR player we had, that JVC model with the big colorful buttons and the "pop-up" loading tray, lasted quite a long time. I took it with me to college, and it survived to my junior year!

Well, since I've only go to Splash on Monday nights... -And I really don't think I've ever gone there on any other night of the week. (Which probably has more to do with the cover charge later in the week for their theme nights.)

I just checked the website for Chelsea Pines Inn.

It seems they've just finished a major renovation. And although I don't see it directly stated on their site, it seems the Chelsea Pines is considered a "Gay Guesthouse", but I'm guessing that also means that they're "hetero-friendly".

I believe I bought my first VCR in January, 1984. It was a Panasonic VHS top loading model and it lasted me clear up until 2001. I had originally bought it for the sole purpose of taping the RSC's NICHOLAS NICKLEBY on PBS. I still have those tapes, even though I long ago purchased the DVD set.

I can't recall what was my first purchased VHS movie. Most probably it was a Disney animation--they were pretty much the first to offer the priced-to-buy videos. Likewise, I can't remember what was my first rental, though I'm pretty sure that THE BIG CHILL was among the first few.

I can definitely recall my first DVDs--CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, THE MATRIX, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE and SOUTH PARK THE MOVIE--all Christmas gifts given to me by my family even though I did not yet have a DVD player.

And our first VCR was purchased from Crazy Eddie's on Sixth Avenue and Eighth Street in 1984. I don't remember the first tape we bought. Videos were incredibly expensive in the early 80s. I remember tapes costing $80 and $90. Too much money for this starving actor.

My first VCR was purchased at Wall-To-Wall Sound (it was just called Wall-To-Wall Sound then, not yet Wall-To-Wall Sound and Video) for over $400.00! It's tuner only included channels 2 through 13, so if I was taping through those channels I could still watch another station. But if I wanted to tape something "on cable" (channels 14 through 99), I would have to do some cable switching in the back of the TV and would have to watch whatever I was taping.

Is it any wonder why I love my Tivo?

My favorite video rental place back then was Movies Unlimited. And they certainly lived up to their name--they had everything[\i]! And if by some chance they didn't have it, they would special order it for you, even if you just wanted to rent it.

DR Cillaliz, thanks for your reports on La Mancha. There's a "revisionist" touring production in New Haven, CT right now that's getting some interesting [read: peculiar] reviews.

One time when I was playing Don Quixote - fortunately, it was only a dress rehearsal - our Aldonza went to get a drink at a nearby water fountain and got locked out of the backstage area, missing her next entrance. I was stranded onstage, and had to improvise for 3 or 4 minutes while the stage manager figured out what had happened. It seemed like an eternity. It was the section leading up to "Dulcinea," so her presence was kind of required for us to continue the scene! I can tell you, I was not feeling very gazelle-like at that moment!

Tuesday morning greetings! It's supposed to get up in the 70's here today, which is about 20^o above normal and not supposed to last.

TOD - our first experience with video (both cameras and players) involved equipment that DH Richard was allowed to borrow from the school district. We made videotapes of DS Rob's first and second birthdays and several years ago I became hysterical upon discovering that the first one had been taped over. I have now hidden the tape of the second birthday, which is the one I'd have saved anyway, if I'd been made to choose.
