Hello All,

Long day at Saturday in the Park.  Lovely weather. I spent the afternoon on a friend's front porch across the street from the park. With the hills you can't see the band shell, but you can hear it.  It was lovely. There was shade and music and beer and a flush toilet instead of a port-a-pottie.

I did go to the concert a few times, but mostly stayed away from the crowds.

B.B. King sounded great. I went over for the beginning of his set, then listened from a distance.  He has some trouble getting around and joked about being old and sitting in a chair, but he played. I left before the fireworks. There are between 20,000 and 30,000 people in an area that holds the people fine, but doesn't deal with all the cars very well.  I decided to get home before the crowd. Glad I did

Fun hearing from the New Yorkers.   DR Elmore, CURTAINS changed a lot from the night we saw it in previews to the next night. That's why I went back one more time.

In other news...

Breakfast at the Brooklyn Diner was fun and festive and delicious!  In attendance this morning, besides myself, were DRs Ben, Ant, Jason, MusicGuy, MBarnum, Ginny and Richard.  *I could probably make a meal out of the BD's fried polenta side dish.

And it was a nice way to end DR MusicGuy's segment of this week's HHW activities.  I did head out a little early to make it over to rehearsal, but...

...When I got to the Roundabout Rehearsal Studio, there was already another rehearsal pianist there.  "What are you doing here?"  Well...  So, after a few phone calls, I went ahead and headed back to the Brooklyn Diner, and just happened to catch everyone as the partay was breaking up so that DR MusicGuy could head to the airport.  -And it was also nice to be able to give a proper Goodbye-Hug to him also.

*And after a few more phone calls, it turned out we were double-booked for tomorrow's rehearsals too, but since Ann stayed today, I'm going to take tomorrow's rehearsal.

After browsing the Virgin Megastore with DRs MBarnum and Jason, I went ahead and headed back to the theatre to get some much-needed practice time on the keyboard.  I think I'm as ready as I'll ever be for my "debut" Wednesday afternoon.  Just need to do it now!   And then...

I just watched two dvds!  Michael Winner's THE NIGHTCOMERS with Marlon Brando doing an Irish Brogue.  Strange, unsatisfying little film with an excellent transfer to dvd.
This was followed by Alexandro Jodorosky's THE HOLY MOUNTAIN.  Loopy, trippy and ultimately quite satisfying with a stellar dvd presentation.
Odd thing, both film had exploding toads. . . . :o

And then came the final Saturday matinee of Company.  Yes, this production has had it's admirers and detractors, and I understand the kudos and criticisms, and I'd have to count myself in among the admirers.

Raul Esparza was simply awesome!  A truly amazing, one-of-a-kind performance.  His acting was truly phenomenal, and his singing was beautiful when called for and raw when called for - and he sounded a lot better than he did on The Tonys and even the OCR of this revival.  The sweetness in his voice during "Someone is Waiting" was particularly affecting.

The device/conceit/gimmick of the actors playing instruments bothered me slightly early on, but it grew on me.  And since the ensemble for this show is sizable - at least in comparison to last season's Sweeney Todd - there were more players, thus more instruments to fill out the orchestral sound.  I particularly enjoyed the piano and bass work of Matt Castle - who has had a career of composer, conductor and musician before this acting turn.

The show did start almost 20 minutes late due to the TV cameras being set up.  Lonny Price, who happened to be the director for the TV version of this John Doyle production, came out before the show, and introduced the cameras and camera-men, as well as reminding people to turn off your cell-phones and beepers - "You don't want to be reminded when you watch the DVD that you forgot to turn off your cell phone."  ;)

But once the lights went down... WOW!  And the audience was with the actors on stage from moment one.  There was a great energy in the house.  Truly one of my top theatrical experiences.

After the show, I happened to run into Barbara Walsh's husband outside the theatre.  We worked a couple of times back down in Richmond, Violet and Richmond.  Then it also turned out that another Richmond director had come up for the weekend, so Jack took us backstage to see Barbara.  It was great getting to see her again, and her "Joanne" really was a total reinvention of the part.  And I told her so.

Then it was off to Fred and Skip's for dinner.  A wonderful meal shared with some wonderful friends.  What more could anyone ask for?

And I will add another big Thank You to our hosts.

-And to Toby and Dylan too, of course!  :)

Then after checking at the Box Office and finding out that there were some house row seats available, I went ahead and purchased a ticket to see Curtains.  I was sitting in Row H, DR MBarnum was in Row J, and DRs elmore, Ginny, and Richard were in Row M.  We all had great seats.  And we all enjoyed the show.

As DR elmore mentioned, they've really done a good amount of work on the show since previews.  I didn't pick up any drastic changes, but I did catch a few new intros and outros, a couple of new jokes, and some clarifications and simplifications of plot points in the book.

And Thanks to DR elmore for taking us all back up to Karen Ziemba's dressing room after the show (again).

OH!  And I did take some photographic proof of DR MBarnum's FIRST Broadway Show!  :D

DR vixmom - What time were you thinking of coming in?

-Or does anyone know when DR vixmom was planning on coming in?  If so...

HHW Pizza Dinner at John's Pizza Times Square - 44th Street (between 8th and 9th).  Meet at 5:15 - or even slightly earlier since it will most likely be crowded.

I actually wonder what else a discussion board could be measured by in terms of "tangible" measures of popularity and participation besides number of posts or page views.

I think a useful measure is noting how many new faces appear - and soon become old hands: Miss Karen, Singsaw, Edisaurus, etc.

Another interesting metric might be the number of purchases (books/CDs/DVDs) are made based on another poster's recommendation.

My only regret is that we have so few non-US posters.

OOOOH!!!!!!!  Before I forget again....

So, we're in a cab heading back from the East Village the other night - DRs elmore, MBarnum and myself.  Michael starts checking out the various stores we're passing...

"Pa Pa Ya King... Papa Yaking..."

PAPAYA KING

:)

I guess he still had Bollywood on the brain from his trip to the video store.

-In any case, all of three of us had a good, hearty laugh.

Note to BK:

Based on TV interviews, many of the folks standing in line all-night to get an iPhone were youngsters expecting to make a killing by re-selling their purchase on eBay - and based on Play Station/XBox precedents, they might well succeed.
