And for a resident of Manhattan, a very sound economical decision.
Add up the "static" vehicle costs (depreciation, maintenance, insurance, garaging) and local operating costs (gas, oil, parking) over the period of a year and you reach a tidy sum.
For fewer dollars you can use lots of cabs and rent luxury cars for week-end getaways.

Of course, if you have inherited a depression era simplistic cost consciousness, you have a problem. Even after I finally convinced my Father to get rid of the Caddy in the garage (which he rarely used, and behind which wheel he was dangerous) he always felt guilty using cabs to get about town - the two grand he saved a year would but a lot of taxi rides!
