I was 8 years old the first time I went to NYC, taken during my Christmas holidays by my aunt and uncle as our Christmas present from them. My brother and I took the train from Charlotte to NYC a day or two after Christmas (they were already in NYC). Got on at midnight and arrived at some point late the next morning.
They wanted to show my brother and me New York, so we did many of the usual tourist things: Empire State Building, subway, Macy's, etc. We went to one Broadway show - MY FAIR LADY. I wanted to see THE MUSIC MAN, but tickets were impossible to get. On New Year's Eve, we went to see and hear Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Symphony at Carnegie Hall, and then endured the madness of Times Square at midnight. We then drove back home the next day in their car.
I bought a little metal statue of the Empire State Building, and I still have the MY FAIR LADY Playbill. I haven't seen that little statue in a long time.
