I can indeed.  The romantic lead was played by a young Keanu Reeves, the new score was by Leslie Bricusse and only two Victor Herbert numbers were used: Toyland and The March of the Toys.

Aha! Thank you! I didn't even watch it long enough to see Keanu...

I'm heading down a bit earlier than usual to get started on catching up with some of last week's TV shows.

I saw this at the Metropolitan Opera Shop yesterday but it's not being officially released until next week; this is the December 1955 broadcast of Menotti's opera AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS.  I gather that for years it was believed that all early kinescopes had been lost, but the Museum of Broadcasting discovered a kinescope of the first production of 1951, which I vaguely remember seeing.  I remember the broadcast of 1954 very well because I had just been released from a week in hospital when I caught viral pneumonia, and I spent Christmas holiday on the sofa in our living room.  The one thing I wanted to see that year was broadcast while I was hospitalized: BABES IN TOYLAND with Wally Cox, Dave Garroway and Barbara Cook.

DR MBarnum, Jason Santiago just won Mr Romance 2007 for being the coverman for romance novels.  Perhaps this may elevate your Dick & Jane reading material. although I doubt there's any literature in a romantic novel.

I was just given a fascinating series of documents from the estate of Anne Caldwell, co-librettist for THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER for Victor Herbert and librettist for THE NIGHT BOAT and THE STEPPING STONES for Jerome Kern; she later went to Hollywood and wrote the screenplay for DIXIANA for Wheeler and Woolsey.  What I was given was a copy of several drafts of a film treatment for BABES IN TOYLAND, intended for Dorothy Lee, an actor I don't know - Tom E. Marshall - and Wheeler & Woolsey, dated July 3, 1930. It's very dark and spooky, and not at all like the Hal Roach version for Laurel & Hardy.

Hey, that is very cool! Was Dorothy Lee to play the role that Charlotte Henry did?

TOD:

I've always loved music, but there are times when I really prefer silence. I know then that I'm feeling pretty stressed.

That said, when I'm feeling down listening to Bach or Beethoven will lift my spirits and restore my faith (some of it, anyway) in the human race. What glorious things humans can achieve!! And then, mesmerized, I go on with my life.

I had plans of working in the yard today, but since it seems to be raining (well, sprinkling) I guess I can just sit on the couch and watch old Universal monster movies  :D

I also need to go through all 156 episodes of THE MILLIONAIRE and find the ones that some of my interviewees appeared in so that I can send them copies.

BK, did you know that you are mentioned in the latest issue of G-FAN? There is an interview with Adryan Russ, who of course sang the song SAVE THE EARTH for the AIP release of GODZILLA VS THE SMOG MONSTER. It is a nice write-up and it mentions you and also the CD you guys did together.

Oh, and BK, stop by the table of Tony Russel while you are at the Ray Courts show and tell him hello from me! We had planned on getting together this weekend in Burbank but because I had no vacation left I, as you can see, was unable to attend. Tony is one swell guy!

Sort of, but the Laurel & Hardy screenplay is so different from the original stage show that all the names and relationships are no longer the same.

I'm Amtrakking (sp?)

Begin Lesson:

Think of -

writ
write
writing
written

and you have examples of two general spelling aids:

1. A final "e" lengthens the preceding vowel (makes it say its name).

2. Doubling the consonant shortens the preceding vowel.

So, Amtraking would rhyme with "raking", as in leaves, and Amtrakking would rhyme with "trekking" as thru the woods.

HOWEVER: the rules generally only apply to vowels immediately preceding the final consonant - and a second intervening consonant causes trouble: Track/tracking, bask/basking. So, if Amtrak were spelled Amtrack we would have Amtracking.

The moral - avoid using gerunds!

End Lesson

der Brucer

OK MattH - chime in please.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Bobby McFerrin's "Circlesongs"
Barber's "Knoxville: Summer of 1915" - Dawn Upshaw's recording.
Kathleen Battle's "So Many Stars" disc
Dave Grusin "Now Playing"
Yo-Yo Ma "...Plays Ennio Morricone"

*I find that if I put on classical piano music, I tend to start listening to it a bit too closely, I start analyzing it.  Yes, that's still sort of relaxing in a way, but I guess that's the college piano performance major in me.

Vibes to all who need them!!!

A big west coast HAPPY BIRTHDAY to DR JMK

TOD - The only good thing to come out of Bernard J. Taylor's pen is the collection of songs from the CD "Child of the Earth" with all selections sung by Claire Moore (my all time favorite vocalist)  That CD became very special as back in 1995 I had my first real date that ended with a kiss.  (the first with a male, anyway).  I came home and put this CD on, and for some reason, I had the CD on repeat all, so all night, I had this CD going and I don't believe I ever reach a state of deep sleep.  Incidently, the date was the first AND last with this person (only because he was a flake) but the CD remains my favorite to zone out to.

Also, I tend to listen to the Carpenters when I'm really down or depressed.

On a sad note, I just found out via the LA times obituary section that Richard Dubois, Mr. America 1954 and Mr. USA 1957, passed away  this week    :-\

I never had an opportunity to meet him, but he had worked with a lot of my interviewees when they were all involved in Mae West's night club act, and of course they all worked out together on Muscle Beach back in the 40s and 50s, so I had heard a lot about him.

This is just a thought, but I think some of us would listen to the Broadway Radio show more often if it was mentioned here once in a while.  I always forget about it, and I do like it quite a lot!!

- it was a good visit with my Dad. I
He does have a "Walker frame" he is supposed to use but he usually forgets! He is now the oldest resident in his hostel. At 101 he is is quite remarkable and quick witted!

See what you have to look forward to, a sharp mind at 101, not bad :)
